The first item of mail in my mailbox this evening was a Love-Hounds digest headed by a long post by Vickie. I must congratulate Vickie for having the guts to reveal several deeply personal items in gaffa in defense of her opinions. I had been paying some attention to the debate between Larry (deLuca?) and Melissa Caldwell; I read Melissa's following post (which didn't appear to be a reply to Vickie's post in the same digest but which had all the things Vickie is flaming her for) and my reaction will be in an upcoming Love-Hounds digest. This also prompts me to bring up something that Vickie mentioned to me in a private e-mail exchange which she thought might make for an interesting Ecto discussion. And thank god we can actually have discussions like this here without worrying so much that some self-righteous unempathic soursoul will dump on us. To quote Vickie directly: >Does Happy have more of an ability to attract people who have >known pain? I think so. I think she can touch deep feelings in >people who have been privliged and pampered, but it's the >"wretches" she speaks most deeply to. I consider myself one of >"the wretches" so I'm not taking shots at anyone. Kate's fans are >half and half, I think. I would agree with Vickie, although I also feel obligated to point out that it is not just Happy's ability to write music that deals with painful emotions, but the ultimately optimistic tone of even her darkest works, that is what really appeals to me. (Not that Vickie disagrees with me on that.) My learned resistance to feeling sorry for myself prevents me from thinking of myself as a "wretch" but several of Happy's songs are amazingly good at describing some of the bad feelings I've had. As I wrote to Happy after receiving _Rhodes Vols. I & II_, "Your music is some of the most personally significant I have ever heard." Although I cannot say that I feel that I have plumbed the depths of painful experience, if I were to describe certain features of my past I'd probably get a higher-than-average painful life experience rating. (Note: I also resist giving spontaneous detailed descriptions of my life, but I'll let you in on a secret--my honesty overrides my modesty, so if you ask me to explain I'll tell you.) Just this evening I was in a mild funk, and by uncanny coincidence "Because I Learn" was the song cued up in my tape player when I first turned it on, which illuminated the particular annoyance that had been bothering me since this afternoon. It's the sort of thing that makes you start believing that Happy is indeed the Holy Ghost of music. ======================================================================== Subject: music, mail, HGP, 1st verse Date: Tue, 26 Nov 91 11:33:11 N From: Klaus Kluge Vickie's visit to the Laurie Freelove concert must have had a big impact on the sales figures of her album "Smells Like Truth", as we have heard of Mitch: > On the basis of Vickie's laudatory review of her Chicago concert last week > , I bought Laurie Freelove's album, "Smells Like Truth," over the weekend and Woj: > second, i also picked up laurie freelove's _smells like truth_ and am utterly > enchanted by it. some of you have probably already herad her work with two As a matter of fact, last week I bought that albums as well. I wasn't looking for it, but when I saw a pile I remembered Vickie's review and collected it. And it really was worth it! Her singing often reminded me of Jony Mitchell (well, of the few songs I have heard of her). Hey, all you people are giving me lots of recommendations for excellent music that I've never heard before. Thank you so much! In the last month I've tried many new artists, and most of your recommendations match my taste of music surprisingly well. I'm sorry woj, that you have problems sending me messages as well. This net is so wierd. So, whoever has problems sending me mail at my office-account, please try my new: kkluge@xenox.ruhr.de People who have no problems with the old one, please keep using it, as the new one is not very convenient. I am trying to get my own UUCP address, so there might be a kkluge@ecto-something in the new year. Meredith & woj, you have both selected a 'Wuthering Heights' cover. I would love to hear both of them, of course, but you might want to discuss if you want to have two versions on the tape (I wouldn't mind). I will send an updated list of selected songs tomorrow, and the announcement with the list of songs next monday. So far we have 17 songs! If your decision has already been made, please let me know the running length of your song. Ooops, I've noticed in the digest, that my posting of the lyrics of Midge Ure's "The Gift" caused the digester some problems because the first verse beginns with the word "From". It thought is was a new message from someone called 'dirt', which is a word from that verse. I don't have it handy, but if someone is interested let me know, and I will look for it. _________________________________________________________ | "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. | | Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond." | | countdown: 18 days --- Happy Rhodes --- | | Klaus "cosmic vagabond" Kluge kkluge@Materna.DE | ======================================================================== Subject: Peachy Sensual World Date: Tue, 26 Nov 91 13:48:03 N From: Klaus Kluge Talking about the Peachy Sensual World shot and if it ever was a poster, I just remembered that I have ordered some KaTe posters and postcards. Has someone had an idea about the cover of our tape? Here is something I had been thinking of, which doesn't require much artistry, just a camera. As it's a present from us, and we do our communication through a computer, I thought about taking a picture of a monitor and (part of) a keyboard. The monitor should fill the cover as much as possible, should have a fuzzy blue background, and some text in big letters. Something like: "from ECTO [in biiig letters] (the fuzzy blue mailing list) [in small letters] for HAPPY" [in biiig letters] [or even biiiiiiger letters] Any comments on that? Alternate ideas? _____ Klaus Kluge --- kkluge@Materna.DE --- Countdown: 18 days ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 26 Nov 91 08:34:36 MST From: dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu (Doug Burks) Subject: Stuff [tm] Greetings, While it's probably possible that someone in this group has tripped over this song, I doubt anyone would choose it for the Happy Gift Project. Still, just to keep things official, add _How Sweet to Be an Idiot_ by Neil Innis to my selection. As for running times, I'll get them for you next week, though I think HStBaI clocks under 3min, and "Tapestry"'s definitely under four. Decisions, decisions! Steve quotes Vickie's question: Does Happy have more of an ability to attract people who have known pain? Steve answers Vickie's question: I would agree with Vickie, although I also feel obligated to point out that it is not just Happy's ability to write music that deals with painful emotions, but the ultimately optimistic tone of even her darkest works, that is what really appeals to me. Doug answers Vickie's question: # # ##### #### # # # # # (borrowing some of the Cat's exclamation # # # # # # # # # points). Happy's voice and music first caught # # #### ### # # # # # my ear, but it was her giving voice to feelings # # # that I'd felt very deeply, but never heard # ##### #### # # # # # expressed before that has entranced me and kept her music close to my heart and my tape player. [I covered most of this in my Carrie post, so I won't expound much further, except that I count among the "wretches" still, in spite of everything I try]. I totally second Steve's point, though I think there's more to it than that. I'll try to expand this point over my Thanksgiving vacation and post it next week. Last week, Vickie unknowingly slipped a potential straight line into the electronic ether, and I was too tired to catch it, so let's try again :-) Vickie wrote: Ecto is addictive, I'm hooked...line and sinker! I feel like a junkie going through withdrawal symptoms when I'm cut off either way. Silly huh? [Vickie presses a warm fuzzy blue EXECUTE] Hello, I know that you've been feeling tired. I bring you love and deeper understanding. Hello, I know that you're unhappy. I bring you love and deeper understanding. Since She created the world, it's no surprise that KaTe even created warm fuzzy blue mailing lists. While on the subject of her KaTeness, Mitch asks: Who's Del Palmer? (Since he seems serious, I must assume that Mitch is not a Love-hound, so I'll answer it). The simplest way to describe Del is via an analogy. He is to KaTe as Kevin is to Happy. He is KaTe's significant other of over ten years, and has played bass on most of her songs, and has engineered her last album or two. In fact, if you want to start a nice little flame war on .gaffa (though that's not hard to do these days), just say, "Gee, I think Del did a great job engineering _TSW_!" Sigh! Vickie and Steve indicate something burning again in .gaffa, but my newsfeed is still a frustrating four to five days behind the real world. I'm impatiently waiting to find out what sparked this one, as Vickie and Steve gave no clue except that the usual suspects were involved. Re police helicopter gunships: I lived in Los Angeles for nine years and heard the LAPD helicopters flying around many evenings. I especially remember one evening when the searchlight was beamed very close to my apartment. I tuned in my police scanner to see what was going on. Well, they were chasing a suspected burglar on foot, with the helicopter keeping track of the man. Their first description of the man said he wore a tan T-shirt with CANOGA on the front. Later, "Correction, the man is bare-chested and has CANOGA tatooed across his chest". I'll second Angelos's emotion, and note that Happy has always included Queen on her list of favorite groups. Though my devotion faded since _The Game_, I've long been a fan. _Night at the Opera_, _News of the World_, and _Jazz_ still earn an occasional spin on my turntable. At least the news was buffered a bit by coming on two separate days. AIDS is such a stupid, avoidable, and tragic way to die. Freddie, for a while, you were the champion of the world! My November Ecto archive just crossed the one megabyte mark! Congratulations, our first megabyte month!! Well, I'm off for my five-day (Yup, five!) Thanksgiving weekend.
