And, that said, howdy everybody! I've been lurking for the past few days to get a feel for "ecto", and the only words I can think of to describe it are warm, blue, and fuzzy. :) I have yet to hear a single Happy song...(though I've heard a good deal of happy songs, not to mention a few gay ones!)..but this should change soon, because someone will finally give me money they owe me and I can go out and buy a CD! I'm assuming that _Warpaint_ is the one I should look for... to you Twin Cities denziens, do you know of any stores I can find Happy's music in? Also, are there any local stations that could be persuaded to play her? I've got almost no idea of what Happy Rhodes' music is like, but your collective enthusiasm is enough to convince to check it out. I'll probably write in a few days to share my thoughts... The only book of Morrison's that I've read is called _Beloved_--it's the book for which she was awarded the '88 Pulitzer-for-fiction. To say that this book is brilliant is an understatement. It's not particularly easy reading because it's complexly set up and the time sequence is not linear. I can't really explain it, but it's a ghost story centered around a former slave--much of the action takes place between the end of the 1860's and the early 1870's. Everyone should read it... Heh heh. I think somebody at MTV has a sense of humor--either that, or things in the "pop" world are scarier than I thought: The very first time I saw the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video, I was rather surprised, as I was not watching 120 MInutes (semi-likely) or Headbanger's Ball (completely unlikely...though, strangely enough, I did happen to flip onto MTV one night during HBB in time to catch an interview with two of the three guys in Nirvana). The fact that such a song called be played by MTV during the middle of a weekday was just a bit weird. But the best part is that it was immediately followed by a video by C+C Music Factory. Try to imagine this ocurring. Fail miserably. I have a radio show that airs in 2 cities > in the US and soon to air in 2 more. I've played Suburban Hum many, many > times on the show, and would love to treat my listeners to other songs. I have found out that my wife was a contemporary of Jennifer's. There is someone here in Grahamstown who was quite a good friend of her and who uses Suburban Hum in some dramatic production of hers, so getting the lyrics will not be a problem. I will be speaking to her later today and will post something to you after that. In the meantime here is some more info..... She has at least one other LP (probably two or three in total if I remember correctly) called HAND AROUND THE HEART (1987). It is a solo LP and has Suburban Hum on it as well. It was produced under the Shifty Records lable - which well known for local 'alternative' music. I have a telephone number and address for Shifty Records because I believe no-one here is still in direct contact with Jennifer. Shifty Records PO Box 27513 Bertsham Johannesburg 2013 South Africa Tel 27-11-6481893 (that's the international number) I can't remember if you are Pacific Time or Eastern time. In any case I know that we have to stay at work an hour late (till about 6pm) if we want to catch early morning (8am) businesses. We are GMT+2. I did try to call Shifty records, but it looks as though they don't open on Saturdays. > I am interested in South African music, both traditional and modern, if > it is unusual (I mean, not just "another rock & roll band" kind of thing) > and I especially am interested in female vocals. There is a guy here at Rhodes who runs the International Library of African music - he apparently has a collection of African Jazz from the Sophiatown era - Sophiatown was a township near JHB which was bulldozed down in about the '60s - this happened a lot betweenm the 50's and the 80's with forced removals. Mango Groove (one of the current pop South African bands) copied some Sophiatown penny whistle sounds in their song Special Star. They are quite "pop", but I enjoy a lot of their music - it is very vibrant and alive. I know that they have toured overseas a couple of times and have made some sort of a name for themselves - I think possibly in Europe though. > I would love the lyrics to Suburban Hum if you could take the time and > trouble to track them down. I LOVE that song so much, but I can't > understand half the lyrics. Even the chorus stumps me "Oh I still care > about the future, I something something worry about the past" I will copy them out for you sometime later today. I believe the entire Forces Favourite collection came at the start of the ECC (End Con.....) - a helluva turbulent time in SA politics. Grahamstown is very small 150 000 people - with a small university of about 4000. When ECC started here there were about 50 people involved (since only whites are conscripted the ECC was mainly a white organisation. In 1986 a lot of these people had to dissapear from Grahamstown because the police suddenly started detaining them (under the state of emergency regulations). Conscriptees were sent into the townships to quell unrest and a lot of problems arose from that. The government had always used the 'Communist threat' to our Northern borders as an excuse for the border war in Namibia, but sending troops into the townships cut very much closer to the bone and I think this is the context for Suburban Hum. In Grahamstown in 1986, 7 whites were detained for periodes of 2months to 4months and hundreds of blacks were detained for similar periods and longer (some for over a year). > I haven't checked the rec.music groups yet, please post something in > there, if you haven't already. Let people know that I'm not making > it up :-) and that someone else has heard of her too. THANKS VERY MUCH!! > I'm so happy that you responded! I will post something to the group - I must confess that after all this, I have not actually had access to her LP's - I have heard her singing - in fact I first heard her music at the dramatic production that I mentioned earlier .... I will borrow the LP while I copy the words down for you. I have a good friend who is well known in the Eastern Cape. He has performed around the country and does some pretty amazing stuff. I will speak to him and ask if I can send you a tape of some of his music too. He is not really a 'commercial' musician and has not made a record but spent some time over in England recently where he recorded a demo tape. I mention him becuase I think he comes from a similar tradition to Jennifer's and you might like the stuff he does.
