Not that I'm a huge Midge Ure fan, but I read somewhere that he had 3 solo albums and I noticed that I had all of them (as well as some from Ultravox), so I thought about seeing him live, while he was in the area. Not interested? Need a reference to someone you know? On his second album 'Answers to Nothing' (1988) KaTe Bush was singing the song 'Sister and Brother' with him (I didn't buy the album because of that; it was a nice bonus surprise). But I'm not that familiar with his songs so that I was not in the crowd who were singing to most of his songs, even the one I didn't know because it was on an album of someone else. Well, we know what real fans are, don't we? :) The stage looked a bit strange at first. Three drum sets? (or is it drum kits?) Was it the wrong concert? Was the opening group 'Ten Drummers Drumming'? The opening act, a group called 'This Picture', was absolutely aweful. Well, what they were playing was well done, it just wasn't very imaginative (it all sounded the same), and the sound quality was poor and too loud. At first they sounded a bit like 'Talk Talk', and it probably is one of their favourite bands, as the were playing a lot from 'Talk Talk' while people were waiting for the show to start. While preparing the stage for Midge Ure they put 'R.E.M.' on the speakers, as well as some songs from the 'Twin Peaks' soundtrack. Nice surprise. So how did the stage look like after that? floor level: bass player and Midge Ure with vocals and guitar middle level: two big drum sets upper level: two keyboard players Everything in black. Background, stage and all clothes. They opened with 'Kingdom Come', the first verse just Midge's voice, no instruments. Excellent! His voice is as powerful and clear as on his records. The selection of songs was no surprise. Some songs from the current album 'Pure', some of his big hits, some from Ultravox and collaborations with other artists. His voice was the major highlight of the concert, followed by the drums. I really enjoyed the drumwork! The keyboards where hard to hear; I had expected more from keys, but maybe I am just spoiled by the keyboards of Manfred Mann's Earth Band where keys are very important, and they are my major live band. I also had the impression that another guitar player was missing. The light show was not spectacular but very atmospheric. It fitted the songs very well. It was not one of my favourite concerts (btw, audience of about 300 people of very mixed age), but it was good music, well done, so I wouldn't mind seeing him again. Today, my feet have recovered, but my ears still have small problems. Stay tuned for a concert report for "Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia" next week. _____ "If I was a sailor Seven oceans I'd sail to her" Midge Ure "As I'm not, I've to take a plane" Klaus Kluge, kkluge@Materna.DE ======================================================================== To join ecto, please send electronic mail to the following address: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu To have your thoughts included in the next issue, send mail to: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu To subscribe to "Ecto", the printed fanzine, send $8 to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 Ecto is issued 8 times/year, and will include photos and as much material from non-net members as we can get!
