I've just gotten my first Kate Bush look (aside from listening to her music, so ...if you want to hear about Happy at this moment, delete this message now.) At this precise moment, I've received and am watching Kate Bush videos, courtesy of Tom Johnson. (Thanks! Tom!) The only words that pursue my lips at this moment are: Incredible! W0W! Jeanne ======================================================================== Date: 15 November 1991 11:35:31 CST From: Subject: Products of an overactive imagination... Our recent discussions of the meanings of "fuzzy blue," "fuzzy blue Vickie ," and related concepts have gotten me thinking some more about how such sundry phenomena as Happy, Ecto, etc. can be kept in the consciousness of the average consumer through shrewd product placement. Not all that long ago, my incoming junk snailmail on a given day included a copy of the latest Victoria's Secret catalog. As I reflect on what I read in it at the time, it has became apparent to me that many of the items discussed/depicted therein were available in blue, but none of them were fuzzy. Since then, it has occurred to me that if knockoffs of the main VS line of blue items could be manufactured in velvet, they could be sold through the same cat- alog, as well as the company's over-the-counter retail outlets, under the distinctive trade name: :-) :-(' F U Z Z Y B L U E V I C K I E :-) :-(' There are even possibilities for spinoffs. :-(' If a thermal version of the main FZB line could be invented, it could be called "Warm Fuzzy Blue," and perhaps integrated into the "Walking Toast" line of cold-weather clothing which I proposed in these pages a couple of weeks ago. (If Victoria's Secret demurrs at the idea of selling thermal lingerie, I have also received unsolicit ed catalogs from an outfit in North Carolina, whose name I have forgotten, whos e stock-in-trade is sensible, functional (but in no sense dorky-looking) women' s underfashions. They actually might not be a bad lot to establish ties to: In a recent NPR interview, Susan Faludi, author of _Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women_, observed that among the people who actually wear these things, sales of the likes of Jockey for Her actually outstrip those of the main VS line.) But come what may of all this, may we at least never live to see Bobby Vinton's "Blue Velvet," or any cover version thereof, used as a commercial jingle for the line :-('. By way of getting us back to earth from the Sensual World :-) : we could establish a beachhead in the pet-care industry with the "Poetic Justice (My Ears Have Parasites)" line of flea collars, sprays, etc. (To ensure their appeal to consumers on all sides of the animal-rights issue, I recommend that these products not be tested on animals :-), and that this be made one of their major selling points.) The human hair-care market could be tapped through the development of Moonbeam Friends Oxy and Nitro Shampoo (whose obviou s choice for a jingle would be "shine on every hair/my oxy and nitro"). It may even be possible to appeal to model builders, by developing the inimitable X-Ecto hobby knife. Court, only confusion prevents me from sending you the Happy GIFs -- do you want the print outs, the GIF files (in what format?), software, or what, what? the weeping willows digital recording system is mostly on line -- we got a whole half a song done before the hard disk went boom. undaunted, i hope to have some ectoidal noodlings recorded soon soon soon. last i looked, i had no tattoos. have not shaved my head recently, so there is some chance of one i missed... y'all are way cooler than a heap o' cool beans... can't wait for the first international Happy convention :) f.f.f.n. -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "boomdidiwanafootah-didwanahigh-high-high-high-high-sagaminitoo" ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 15 Nov 1991 14:29 EST From: Generalisimo Llama Subject: A first, hesitant toe in the water Hi there! This is my first sending attempt on the list -- and welcome to it. Please check in your coats at the door and a waiter will be with you shortly... I just want to start out by saying that I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how to work this system, so I'm not sure if anyone will actually be able to read this mail once I send it out. My luck, it will probably miss ecto completely and end up at the Pick-6 lottery machine at a 7-Eleven somewhere outside of Tulsa. Not that I don't like 7-Elevens, mind you, but you can only send e-mail on the philosophical importance of Slurpees for so long. If on the other hand, this actually made it to the list and people can read it, then you have just borne witness to a bona-fide miracle; praise the Gods of the Vax Cluster. Worship and praise and stuff like that! In either case, I'm still pretty inept at this, so I take this opportunity now to apologize and grovel at your computerized feet. IT'S NOT MY FAULT, THOUGH!!! I'm an aspiring writer trapped at a technical school where the VAX/VMS is a way of life and Hum majors are usually burned at the stake. As a result, I don't know how to do those really neat things like insert pieces from other messages or put that ID/quote label at the end of the e-mail. I'll pick it up eventually, however, so please be understanding, caring, and patient. Thank you. Now -- onto business. First, thanks to the person who sent out a warm blue fuzzy [something]. I'm not exactly sure what one is, but as long as it's not something that would be considered illegal in most states and third world nations, I appreciate it. Next -- I havent as of yet heard any of Happy's music (largely due to the fact that I just found out she existed about two days ago). I am a Kate Bush fan, however. Someone mentioned earlier about Kate's box set "A Women's Work". I heard that it's not going to be released in the US due to label disputes. Is this true? Can we shoot the people resposible for the decision and consider it justifiable homicide? (By the way, excuse the spelling as well. On my mail editor, once I've entered a line, it can't be changed or corrected. Sucks for me, I guess) Also -- what is all this business about "choosing songs"? Could someone explain it to a newcomer like myself? Thanx. I hope/pray this actually makes it off my system. Oh well -- here goes... Jim Flynn It lay buried here, it lay deep inside me. Stevens Institute of Tech It's so deep I don't think that I can Hoboken, New Jersey Speak about it. u95_jflynn@vaxc.stevens-tech.edu -Kate Bush "Love and Anger" ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 15 Nov 91 14:39:53 -0500 From: gb10@gte.com (Gregory Bossert) Subject: Re: Products of an overactive imagination... > Mitch Pravatiner > Acting head of product design > Ecto research and development department good thing Mitch is just acting; if those were *real* jokes, they'd be AWFUL! ;) footah! -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "i'm on a road that's parallel to you" -- HR ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 15 Nov 91 03:27 CST From: vickie@chinet.chi.il.us (Vickie Ann Mapes) Subject: Quick one Hello to Jim and Cathy!! Vickie here. It was a WONDERFUL concert! There were less than 20 people there :-( :-( and those people were fairly apathetic. Chris and I were right up front and gave her lots of applause. She said "I like you people!" but after the concert she seemed very depressed and disappointed at the whole thing. I think the whole day had gone badly for them, because they had gotten stuck in traffic and were 3 hours late getting their sound check done. Still, the music was excellent and she gave her all. Later I'll post a bio, but quickly, she sang with a group named Two Nice Girls from Austin (Brian, you know of them?) but left after the first album (the same album they covered a Jane Siberry song on) and went solo. Her first solo album is called _Smells Like Truth_ and it is excellent. Her music is hard to label, "experimental/alternative folk" comes sort of close. I gave her an edited (talking cut out) tape of Suspended In Gaffa, so if anyone does go to see her, you might mention it. Here's a tour schedule: Friday Nov 15 Cleveland, OH Empire Club Hmmm, opps, looking at this schedule, I see that the dates don't match up with the days. The Chicago and Cleveland shows do, but nothing else. I'll go ahead and put down what's here, but you should call the venue and double check if the day is correct or the date. This is what's listed... Saturday Nov 17 appearing on NPR's "Mountain Stage" Monday Nov 19 Washington DC The Birchmere Tuesday Nov 20 Boston, MA Nightstage Friday Nov 23 Philadelphia JC Dobbs Sunday Nov 25 Atlanta, GA The Point Don't trust those days or dates, but call the venues. My apoligies to those who aren't anywhere near these places, but I strongly urge those who are, go see this concert. For one thing, it's a GOOD concert, plus, you'll be supporting a very interesting and talented unknown artist, and we're all very aware of how nice that feels, eh? Tickets here were only $6.00, so her record company is underwriting the tour and it may be as cheap everywhere else. Don't anyone let the word "folk" in my description above fool you, she's influenced by people like Peter Gabriel and Laurie Anderson and This Mortal Coil (that's what it says in the bio, and she even covers "Song to the Siren" in concert and on her album, though in concert she credited the writer, Tim Buckley). Vickie sez...check it out! ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 16 Nov 1991 04:03 +8:00 From: SVODOPIER@cc.curtin.edu.au Subject: Jessica's Butt :-) Jessica, I have absolutely no idea why you'd want a peach tattooed on your rear, but d'ya reckon you could scan it in and send us all a GIF of it when you get it done? 8-P Martin ,---------------------------+----------------------------. _ . | I'm the devil in disguise | Martin Dougiamas. | ~ _r' Ll\ ~ | I tell you no lies | sdougiama@cc.curtin.edu.au | | \ ~ | I'm playing in a | Curtin University | ~ \ ._ / ~ | rock and roll band. | Perth, Western Australia --+---> x~ `-' ~ `========== J.J.
