Vickie here. This appeared in rec.music.cd and it's a wonderful way to get Happy's name out there. It's a Favorite Record Covers Poll, and, if you like a particular Happy cover a lot, send it to this guy. I personally sent him Rearmament and Ecto (along with, gee, bukou Cocteau Twins, various Kates and many others. Just thought I'd pass this on for those who don't get the newsgroups. This is the last call for votes. I am posting to smaller, more specific groups to get an even wider range of votes. I have received about 60 responses to date. Results will be posted within the next two weeks if all goes well. RULES: 1) Mail your ballot directly to me. Please do not post or mail to a list. 2) RANK your top ten choices. You can vote for AS MANY COVERS AS YOU LIKE...points assigned as follows: 1st place=11 pts, 2nd=10, 3rd=9, 4th=8, 5th=7, 6th=6, 7th=5, 8th=4, 9th=3, 10th=2, and everything else gets 1 point. 3) Please put the artist first, then title. I am compiling the results *very* manually. This makes it easier for me. 4) Remember, take advantage of being able to vote for as many as you want! Most people are only voting for 10 things. --- Steve Hill SHILL@HARPERVM.BITNET "Tear at flesh, rip at skin, smash at doubt..." -The Cure "The wine's Portugese and the bread's only bread" -Legendary Pink Dots ---------------------------------------------------(must dash)-------- ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 13 Nov 91 18:11:17 CST From: vishal@ra.csc.ti.com (Vishal Markandey) Subject: Tape for Happy Klaus Kluge writes about making a tape for Happy. Great idea!! And yes, let's keep it secular. My biggest concern is, what if Happy has already heard the stuff, maybe owns it even (say, as may be the case for Kate and Peter Gabriel's music). Also, what if two people pick the same song ? - V ======================================================================== Date: 13-NOV-1991 19:21:53.81 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: Got it and other Stuff\ Hi! Doug, I did get the interview- but I hadn't gotten that particular Digest when I sent that post. Thanks for putting it in-- I wish I'd heard it (but I guess I'll get a tape sometime, huh? :). Concerning the Happy present, if it bugs people so much, why don't we think of it as Something To Send To Happy As A Present Which Happens To Fall In With A Popular Gift-Giving Season? It may be the Christians' fault, but it is a neat idea, being nice to one another and generosity and all that-- and besides, if Happy herself celebrates Christmas, she should get a Christmas present. My Jewish friends give me Christmas presents all the time, and I give them things because I like them. Works fine. Someone (sorry, wasn't paying attention to the header :} ) mentioned John Cage. I think seeing him in concert would actually be worth it, because of what he *does* with incidental noise and silence itself-- have you ever seen 4'22'' performed? I have- it's amazing. You just sit there and pay attention to what's going on around you, which is the whole point. Neat. Also, Cage did an experiment where he shut himself up in a completely soundproof room for a while and listened to himself. He put someone else in the room later, and that person (can't remember who it was) asked him afterwards why he'd heard two distinct sounds, although there was on noise in the room. Cage's answer: You hear two sounds, a deep tone and a high-pitched one. The deep one is the blood flowing through your veins, the other is your nervous system. So you see, you can never be in "total silence" at all. :) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Meredith Tarr "We let the weirdness in..." mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu -Kate Bush +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ======================================================================== Date: 13-NOV-1991 19:36:28.19 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: My contribution: Hi again... My contribution to Happy's tape, I think, will be a recording of the New Group's rendering of "Wuthering Heights". The New Group is a coed a cappella group here at Wesleyan, and one of its co-founders arranged it and sang the solo (quite well, I might add) at various jamborees last year (so I naturally missed them, but a friend in the group let me tape her tape of the premiere :). I think Happy would enjoy getting something as random and rare as that. (The introduction to the song is also priceless.) Uh, I guess if any of you want a copy of this too I could arrange something... e-mail me! :) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Meredith Tarr "We let the weirdness in..." mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu -Kate Bush +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 13 Nov 91 21:04:33 EST From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (woj) Subject: ecto-gasm! cripes! i mentioned to michy in a letter a few days ago about ecto gaining inertia, but this is ridiculous! *four* digests in *one* day? and love-hounds was putting out no more than two a day when i last checked...yow! gb10@gte.com (Gregory Bossert) sez: >hmm, flash judgement, uninfluenced by net opinions, critical preoccupations, >or a second listening to the CD: >the new My Bloody Valentine album, _loveless_, is very very good. i got this cd two days ago and it has never left the cd player. but i should warn people: it is "not for everyone". my bloody valentine is taking the basic structure of pop and rebuilding them with walls of guitar noise instead of jangle. end result is that they manage to be dreamy while ripping shreds to your eardrums. it's seventh heaven for me, but i dunno what it might do for you. as a pointer, lush is a very toned down variant on what mbv has done with _loveless_ and their previous records. if you are uncertain, but tempted, look for their release called _tremelo_ - it's a 4 song ep that will get your feet wet (and your ears ringing). It has occurred to me that one way to get Happy some exposure would be if copies of her albums could serve as premiums for donations. Either Aural Gratificatio n Records could donate some (particularly to the Albany station, if all NPR affiliates are having pledge drives right now), or else we as individuals could buy copies and donate them, or some of both. It would need to be determined what stations are having pledge drives now, and whether they accept stuff to give out in this manner. If it can't be worke d out this time around, maybe for a future drive. Anyway, what does everybody think?
