BTW, can anybody recommend good record stores in LA? I'll be there in a week for a week for a conference, but I predict I will get bored with Science rather fast and will have to explore new music territory. OH before I forget. MTV's 120 Minutes (the 10 minutes of them I saw) were broadcast from the CMJ alternative music convention, and I remember that Happy and Kevin were supposed to go there. Did they go? What happened? However, I skipped the couple of digests that came after I made my major boner post where I mistook Cynthia for Richard. I haven't seen any of these posts yet; I did stop reading the last digest after a block of Cynthia posts started to appear. Just wonderful to see that Cynthia is in top form again. I used to administer a large local bulletin board and have thought about these things a lot, and I'd say that I'd probably rather let Cynthia join ecto (if she wanted to; god forbid) rather than figure out an arbitrary excuse to keep her out. I guess we'd have to decide whether we want this to be a list that anyone can join or whether we want it to be for Happy fans only--and if so, what proof does someone have to give to show their devotion? The first is a much easier policy to work with, even if it leaves the risk of some flamer joining. I'm a little uneasy about your gaffa .sig, Vickie, because it's the sort of thing that might backfire. It just might tempt a flamer to join ecto in order to "save it from toadies" or whatever. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 11 Nov 91 12:55:01 -0500 From: gb10@gte.com (Gregory Bossert) Subject: ecto to come ok, after a long hiatus from my (self-imposed :) ecto-duties, i am (in the midst of great things and constant self-interruption) beginning to get organized again... high on the list is the Kevin Bartlett interview, to be included in a future issue of the ecto-zine... so, this is an official call for questions for and about Kevin and his music. those of you who haven't heard his tapes should still participate -- remember that Kevin co-produced, recorded, and played on _Warpaint_! questions about his work with Happy are encouraged... you can email me directly, if you like -- i'll post the questions to the list in a week or so. the more the merrier, as it were; don't be shy! hmm, Vickie, what's the state of the Happy Homeground interview? the ecto-band project is stirring sleepily and making grumbles down in the basement -- and jessica and i are going to work on a hopped-up dance version of "come here..." this weekend -- hmm, maybe a Welsh remix? ;) the game's afoot(ah)! -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "you sing the words that i might say..." -- HR ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 11 Nov 91 10:55 CST From: vickie@chinet.chi.il.us (Vickie Ann Mapes) Subject: WXPN interview will air **TOMORROW**! Ah, but only if you live in a few cities. However, I'm posting a list of stations airing the show just in case someone who might be interested is a listener of one of these stations, or has friends who are listeners. I've been talking about Happy Rhodes on the net for nearly 3 years now. It's exciting for me to be able to pass this information along, and I hope it will be of use to someone out there. ......................................................................... The radio show is called "World Cafe" and originates from WXPN in Philly. I am not sure if this entire 2-hour show is dedicated to Happy Rhodes, but at least a good chunk of it will be. Happy's portion will consist of an interview, and 3 songs recorded live in the studio. They are songs that appear on Happy's albums, but were re-recorded especially for this interview. Example: I very often say that one of the >reasons I like Happy/Kate/Jane is because the music is not such that you >can sing along with the first time you hear it and the lyrics are more Hmmm... I thought this was interesting. My husband and I have VERY different musical tastes (Kate, Cure vs. Beethoven, Gordon Lightfoot) and he always says that I only like music that you can't sing along with.... We do a movie review show for cable and the only movie that we've VIOLENTLY disagreed on was 'Truth or Dare' - although he said he had to respect some aspects of Madonna, he thought the movie was a crock as a documentary. I'm no Madonna fan, but thought it was a terrific movie. I'd have to agree on 'Live to Tell' and I also like that Spanish song she did (can never remember the title). I like Stephen King, but find his writing has gone downhill - never liked Pet Sematary that much, for example, but love Salem's Lot, The Shining, and am rereading The Stand right now (the expanded version). Whoever said they had all the SK, but hadn't bought the new one yet (I think it was Vicki) - the Boston Globe reviewed it and said it was the best thing he had written in years. Several people I know are reading it right now and are very enthusiastic. Interesting comment on gaffa about Mother Stands for Comfort being based on The Dead Zone - after all, wasn't Get Out of My House based on The Shining?
