How many Stephen King fans are there in Ecto??? Certainly not me. I've never been able to get through even a short story of his...ugh. (I hope this doesn't alienate me from you guys-- :) "Terra Incognita": Thank you for determining it's Japanese- 'coz it's certainly not Latin! I was actually thinking it was a strange form of Middle High German- "sagaminidoo" can be broken up into "saga mini doo", which looks like a corrupt spelling of "sage Minne du", or Say love you (with bad grammar). "Minne" means love here, and not "Liebe", so love in this sense is the courtly one, where the knight admires the damsel from afar... Neat, eh? Totally off the wall, but interesting nonetheless. :) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Meredith Tarr "We let the weirdness in..." mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu -Kate Bush +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 8 Nov 91 05:29:45 EST From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu Subject: ectoplasm MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu sez: >Jessica, thanks for resending #24, but it came through fine the first time- likewise here, but as you noted (jessica), i think that the control character mucking was only with those who use windows systems. us poor text-bound folks never noticed... Klaus Kluge sez: >Do you remember the good old days, Jessica, when there were just a >handful of Ectophiles and you knew all their names by heart? :-) nostalgia already? >> of his work. I haven't read any female sf writers other than Mary Shelley >> and Ursula K. Le Guin. Shame on me, I know. I wish I'd been more familiar >My recommendation: Patricia McKillip "Fool's Run" just to continue this thread farther, i'll second the recommendations for c.j. cherryh. not only is her work "hard" science fiction, it's also hard reading. unlike most authors, she never has one of those "chapter 2 explains everything that is going on" plots. the trick with her is to read the book once, think about it for a while and then read it a second time when things become a little bit clearer... also, my other fave other is tanith lee. she does both fantasy and sf, so evreyone should be happy with her. happy's songs actually remind me a bit of tanith's writing style: the line between reality and surreality gets so blurred that after listening to happy or reading tanith, you have to sit there and readjust to the world around you again... kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu sez: >but my favorite authors are not sf authors. >(in case you were wondering they are: John Irving, Robertson Davies, Milan >Kundera, dare I say Stephen King, and some greek guys you wouldn't have >heard of, or at least not til I translate their works to English :-)) milan is quite wonderful. have you read _immortality_ yet? i've been meaning to order that for the past few weeks and i just never get around to it... by the way, angelos, i listened to the elefthenia ... and listened and lis- tened and listened. i like it quite a bit - and you are right: it is better than annabouboula! jessica sez: >Angelos dares to say Stephen King in his list of favorite authors.. afraid i can't add my name to this list though. then again, horror does not generally excite me, so i'm not all that surprised. i did read _the gunslinger_ and while it was interesting, it didn't enchant me. >I'm often wary of liking things that are "popular", but I'd never not >give something a chance because of it's popularity. glad that you added the caveat. my feeling is that you should like what appeals to you and if what you like happens to be popular at the time, so be it. >I sent the tape two weeks ago.. and yesterday Happy called me. >She says they've chosen another girl (kelly something, i tihnk..) >but that she loved my voice (!!!!) and that they didn't think >there's anything kelly can do that I can't, but that she has better >control. (which makes a lot of sense and does not come unexpected :) and well too that she should love your voice. sorry that it didn't work out, but there is always future albums...and of course, yours and greg's studio noodlings. ecto-band...yeah. angelos again: >BTW, I just got KaTe's NFE on CD (I have the album home). It even has lyrics >included (unlike TD and HoL) !! But I am listening to Ommadawn, right now! bout time that oldfield got his early stuff out on cd! >But Newbury Comics >had the Cocteau Twins box set for $59.99 (I almost bought it but realized >I didn;t know what was in it). it has 10 cd singles within - the nine 12" eps that the twins have released already plus a cd with 4 extra tracks as well. i ordered mine wednesday and it *should* be waiting for me when i get home tonight...i paid $50 for it and i honestly am not sure why i bought it. i must be a twins weenie or something (does that make me a geminiphile?). yours in babble... woj@remus.rutgers.edu - heil erland! - in the beginning was the fish... ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 8 Nov 91 02:00 CST From: vickie@chinet.chi.il.us (Vickie Ann Mapes) Subject: Quickies Jessica, my condolences. Maybe NEXT time!! Welcome to Alan! I'm over 2 days behind so I have a lot to catch up on, but it will have to wait until this weekend. Quickies though... I was wondering if anyone had picked up on my line about having to visit Oginquit, Maine (that Stephen King fans would know) and just thought that there weren't any SK fans here. Glad to hear otherwise. Jessica, you really *must* give _Danse Macbre_ another chance. It's one of my favorites. I'd say 3rd favorite after The Stand and The Shining. I found it fascinating from beginning to end, and I've read it multiple times. *And* I'm not even really a horror fan (like you, I read SK because of his characters, writing style and story-telling) and Danse Macbre has all of those, yet, strangely enough, it's non-fiction. I love it. It and Different Seasons are the only two SK books Chris has been able to read, he doesn't like any of the others. Steve V, Cynthia would *never* join Ecto! If she did, she'd find it boring very quickly. No flame wars? What a concept! Latah, got to go answer Ken Brownfield... Vickie ps, just got home from seeing The Innocence Mission. WONDERFUL!!!!!! More on that later too...but I did give Don Peris a cassette of Warpaint and told him that Happy is a fan of theirs. Don and Karen remembered me!!!! ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 8 Nov 91 13:23 GMT From: The Cat's Meow!!! I need more information please!!!! thats all for now.. thanx!! MERow! My favorite authors, in approximate order would be Michael Moorcock, Raymond E. Feist, Alan D. Foster, Douglas Adams (Nah, put him up front I guess), and Anne McCaffrey. I don't read much of the other big names (Heinlein, Anthony, Zelazny, Pournelle, etc.) But prefer the little known out of the way gems.... kinda like Happy! Cocteau Twins: Ran out and bought the Box Set last night, $55 plus tax. I think it's great, because I only have their domestic releases so I have absolutely *no* overlap in my collection. (Okay, so I do have a spare Iceblink luck single... Anyone interested?) I'm starting to like them more and more. Victorialand had been in my CD player for a week... This is *very* unusual for me, *very*! I almost never play a CD more than a few times in a row. I just have it on shuffle play, and get lost in the music as I drift off to sleep. Jessica's Voice: Congratulations Jessica! Maybe you should make up a tape of your singing for all of us? Always on the lookout for those little gems, like I said.
