Hi Everyone, I just bought Happy's album, Equipoise, as an experiment. I've never heard Happy before, but I decided that if she has such a loyal following, she must be pretty good! So, anyway, I bought the album used for $9. I haven't listened to it yet (my CD player is at college, I'm not), and I'd like some background info if anyone has the time to supply it. Which album (first, second, third, etc) is this? How would you rank it with regard to her other albums? What interesting things should I look for when I listen to it? What are your favorite songs? Is this indicative of her other work? If you decide to write, send it to me personally so the list isn't cluttered with answers to my newbie questions! Thanks in advance... We'll probaby be burt ot visually (I usually have dreams of c colors and patterns after going to large show, trying to deccide what will sell and what I'm enjoying on some silly level etc) and need some other kind of stimulation. So, are there any good live music places there? Ones with music in an ecto vein? Or am I posting in vain? Are there any Columbus ectophiles who might know thi important information. We'll be staying with my sister who owns a television set and no stereo. She likes the radio and, last time we took her to an afine crafts show, says that she can't buy art if it it doesn't match her couch??? I love her but doubt that she'd take us to a place we' enjo. brad -- bhuthin@pen.k12.va.us ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 30 May 1994 22:00:56 -0400 (EDT) From: S Trowbridge Subject: Re: Frente! This particular disc/isue has tracks by the cranberries, madder rose, kristin hersh and a couple of other female groups that slip my mind right now... heavenly voices: this 2 disc compilation was mentioned a couple of mths ago and i had the chance to listen to it at brian bloom's place It's a really good overview of the ecto-groups out there and i'd encourage everyone to get a copy (if you haven't already done so) the moon seven times track was really good, as were the other tracks (i'm suffering from the effect of sleep deprivation so forgive the lapses in memory.... :)) that's about all the psuedo reviewing i'll do for now...and i wish all of you the best in all your present and future undertakings. Guy" Subject: Vancouver Ecto-gathering II Date: Mon, 30 May 1994 22:49:03 -0700 (PDT) Well, folks! There definitely seems to be enough interest in an ectogathering in the Vancouver, Canada, area at the end of August. Either the third or fourth weekends in August will probably be best. Also, the idea of a camping expedition to Long Beach has come up, though Neile has pointed out that this requires a lot of booking and planning, particularly since the end of August is the busiest time of year for the Long Beach area. (and we're talking west Vancouver Island, not the American Long Beach!) So for now the idea of a salmon and veggie burger barbecue on the beach at Stanley Park seems best, weather permitting. (the only hitch to this idea as far as I can tell is that the consumption of fuzzy blue drinks on the beach may be a problem...) Sooooo if you're at all interested in coming to this get-together *please* email me at neilg@sfu.ca, even if you're not sure if you can make it or not. That way I can get a mailing list together and I won't have to send tantalizing email messages to all of Ecto about the exciting plans! Please tell me which weekend is best for you and if you're interested in a group camping trip to the Island as well as a picnic. Thanks! - Neil K. -- 49N 16' 123W 7' / Vancouver, BC, Canada / neil_k_guy@sfu.ca ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 31 May 1994 02:32:56 -0700 From: "Alex Gibbs" Subject: Re: VA college DJ to play Happy on Sunday I wrote: > Happy Rhodes' "Feed The Fire" to be played by Damien on > Sunday, May 29, between 9 and 11 pm (his shift is 9pm-2am) on > 99.3 FM / 540 AM, WMWC from Mary Washington College. Well my friend did play it and asked people to call in with comments (see below). Later on he replayed a snipet of it twice to refresh people's memories. He called me a while after playing it and I gave him the the Woodstock show dates and mentioned _Building the Colossus_, which he then announced. We then talked off and on for about 4 hours while he was on the air (I'm in Arizona!). Next week he will be playing another Happy song from _Warpaint_, probably "Terra Incognita". I wish he could play "The Wretches Gone Awry". If you can hear him, call and say "I want to talk to Damien about ecto." BTW, I met him on the net and mentioned ecto to him but he lost access not long after. He got a few calls specifically about "Feed the Fire" but mostly asked request callers what they thought. Lines were busy. The 15-20 he talked to about Happy ranged in age from 16-26 (it is a college station). He gave out info about ordering/finding Happy to 3 or 4. :) No one from ecto called in as far as we know, which isn't too surprising. Here are some of the doubly paraphrased comments, starting with some more ambivalent/negative/silly ones. I'm sure everyone will get a chuckle here and there, as well as notice some reoccuring themes: Anonymous male - "Why did you (DJ) play it? Should be playing alternative." (Damien thought this was a silly comment considering the variety of things he plays.) Tom, 22 - Not fond of most female artists but liked Tori's show, although not her albums. Might like Happy if she performs like Tori. He requested Alice in Chains. Lisa, 23 - Thought it was too popish. Prefers piano solo type stuff to dance stuff from women. (heh!?) Rachel, 19 - "I like her because she seems to be a part of the growing number of alternative female artists." She was impressed that more women like her are getting played and requested Tori's "Silent All These Years". Michael, 25 - "It sounded good. Will you play something else from the album?" :) Has no money but interested. David, 20 - "I like her voice, (probably said whispy but might have been "raspy"). Sort of like Sarah." Said he doesn't have many female artists himself. Lisa, 23 - Thought was okay but was ambivalent about hearing more. She thought it was good to play more local & unknown artists. (He pointed out to her that she wasn't local.) Martin, 20 - Might be interested and wants to hear more but isn't buying anything now. (Damien said this was a common reponse and not surprising since most are students.) Burl, 24 - Would like to see her in concert. Would be happy to see her open for the Tori show he's going to. Bill, 21 - "The song is good for radio because there aren't a lot of women out there and she seems to be a good musician who knows how to play instruments besides the piano." Jane, 22 - "Drop-dead gorgeous voice." Interested in hearing more. :) That's it! I probably won't post so much about what happens next week but I will be talking to him about it. She was on stage for 2 1/4 hours. A really good show!!! The part I liked best was a drum solo on the guitars! What that is?? Well, Melissa, the guitarist and the drummer assembled around the drummer and held their guitars up. The drummer then played a solo on the strings of the guitars. I've never seen anything like this before, and believe me, it was superb!!!! Is there anybody out there who's seen this drum/guitar solo before? If so, could you let me know which song they extend with this solo? I'd also like to know whether one of these solos has been recorded on either a live album or a bootleg? I'd love to have that on CD. And if you get a chance to see Melissa live, don't miss it. Actually, I think she'll soon come over to the States for some gigs.
