I have four tickets to see Tori Amos in New Haven, CT, on Monday, June 13 that I need to sell. For some reason, my roommate and our friend would rather play a softball game than go to see Tori Amos--some people's priorities are really screwed up! The cost is $25 (what I paid for them). While we're on the subject of Tori, I didn't know that there was a Past The Mission single (or is that singles?). Can someone either post or email me a track listing? One more thing: I can't believe Happy loves the new Yes album. As a huge Yes fan, I desperately wanted to love this album, but alas, I couldn't, for it SUCKS! It hasn't been in Ann Arbor yet, and the store guys have been complaining about how unforthcoming Green Linnet has been about it. Most of my listening time has been spent playing the new Boz Scaggs record over and over and over again. Smooth, soulful, righteous. Imagine a band from Scotland who have been highly influenced by Ry Cooder, Texas blues and rock, with a female vocalist who has a voice to die for. Sharleen Spiteri's voice is killer on CD, I can't imagine what it would sound like live. I'm so sorry I missed it, even though they played in the very worst venue in the entire state of Illinois. (The Riviera, a place so bad that we've passed up concerts by the Cocteau Twins, the Sundays and others because we hate going there so much). Texas has released 3 albums, _Southside_, _Mother's Heaven_ and the newest _Ricks Road_, and I love all 3 of them equally, with a slight bias to Mother's Heaven. They're not blues, and they're not rock, they're not easily classified at all. They're Scotland's Texas, and they're quite wonderful. Big help, huh? :) Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 26 May 1994 17:34:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Tara Marchand Subject: Sarah McLachlan in Sacramento, CA I saw Sarah McLachlan perform last night (May 25th) at the Radisson Hotel in Sacramento. Almost every aspect of the concert was perfect--the setting, the atmosphere, the audience, the performers. The show took place outside in the Radisson's courtyard. The stage was set up at one end, and rows of folding chairs were set up for the audience. I was glad that it was a sit-down show rather than a stand-up one (which had been the case when I saw the Sundays in the same venue). The opening band played as the sun went down, and Sarah came on when it was dark. The weather was all right, albeit a bit windy and cool as the night progressed. The Devlins, a band from Ireland with whom I wasn't familiar, opened the show. The style of their music fit well with Sarah's but was inferior overall. Their songs seem to rely too much on keyboard effects and not enough on the musicians' abilities with their other instruments. The singer's voice is reminiscent of that of the lead vocalist for Toad the Wet Sprocket, which isn't a bad thing. Sarah herself joined them onstage to sing backing vocals for one slow song, and various other members of her band went on and off the stage, too. Overall, I found the Devlins pleasant but not outstanding or remarkable--I won't be listening for them on the radio or buying their album. Sarah opened with "Plenty," starting the song off with acoustic guitar and vocals alone and then bringing in the rest of the band. About six or seven people made up her backing band (I can't remember the exact number because the members kept going on and off the stage for different songs). Unfortunately, Sarah didn't introduce them, so I'm not sure who was who. I'd be very curious to know if her producer, Pierre Marchand, was among the players. Anyway, I didn't write down the set list, so I don't remember exactly what songs Sarah played and in what order, but I can say that she concentrated on _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_ but also performed a lot of _Solace_ and a few tunes from _Touch_. She introduced a few of the songs, saying that "Good Enough" is about people who have trouble getting in touch with themselves and communicating, "Ice" is about her experiences in Thailand and Cambodia, and "Ben's Song" is about a little boy she used to know. Sarah was friendly and polite, and thankfully, there was very little heckling from the audience, only a few whistles and an "We love you, Sarah!" from a woman. Sarah commented that the last time she played in Sacramento, she performed in a bar in a strip mall and that this venue presented a big change. Throughout the show, Sarah switched between not playing any instruments and playing the acoustic or electric guitar or the piano. When she was instrument-less, she danced around, making little waving motions with her hands. All of the band members were very involved in the music, based on their movements and facial expressions. Probably my favorite song of the show (and one of my favorites on _FTE_) was "Fear," an intense, almost chilling evocation of the title emotion. "Hold On" and "Into the Fire" were big "rock" numbers, with a lot of electric guitar work and fast tempos. Unfortunately, Sarah and the band performed the fast version of "Possession" (a la her performance on _Letterman_) rather than the slow version (a la her performance on _The Today Show_). This was certainly one of the best shows I've ever attended. It was well worth the $22 I paid for the ticket--I sat fairly close, and I could see pretty well. Sarah's singing and playing were in top form, as were the performances of her bandmates. At times, her vocals brought tears to my eyes because of their incredible expressiveness. Her voice needs no studio help or manipulation, which is why I was disappointed that she was backed by so much instrumentation--it just wasn't necessary. It would've been nice to have seen her with just guitar, bass, and drums, although I admit that the keyboards were sometimes very effective. In any case, the show was incredible. Tara -- | Tara R. Scheduled to perform are Sarah McLachlin, Happy Rhodes, Iris Dement, Sam Phillips, Odetta(sp? local Philly artist), Shawn Colvin as well as others. This 2 day concert was custom made for ectophiles!!! I expect we should be able to get a rather good contingent down there. Word of advice for anyone coming down, bring a cushion as the concrete seats/steps do get a little uncomfortable as the day wears on. If anyone needs directions I'll post something or send you EMail. I'm still trying to upload the color scan that I did that incorporates Sarah McLachlin's FTE cover with the pattern that is used in the liner notes. I use it as my Windows wallpaper along with some that I've done of Happy, Kate and Loreena McKennitt. Before I go I thought I would pose the same question that I've asked on a few other related mailing lists. Jeff Pearce pearceja@wl.wpafb.af.mil ____________________________________________________________________________ Under the Pink Tori Amos Sound: A-, Performance: A- Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Sarah McLachlan Sound: A-, Performance: B+ After a week of immersion in these two very challenging albums, I woke from a disturbing dream - a Straw Dogs sort of blood-splattered thriller that was scored with songs from Tori Amos' Under the Pink. The album itself hadn't suggested this grisly imagery from listening to it, so it must have worked on some weird subconscious level. I suspect that Ms. Amos would be very pleased to hear this. Both Under the Pink and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy are albums that make strong demands of the listener. Neither works very well as a passive listening experience; you must make an effort to reach them. Amos is the more opaque of the two artists. A vocal style that stretches and twists the syllables makes it difficult to understand what a song's about. Lyric sheets without punctuation don't make things easier. In contrast, Amos throws herself into her songs with the abandon of a method actor, virtually living out the scenarios before you. Some melodies are tortuously complicated, while others, such as "Pretty Good Year" and "Past the Mission," are intoxicatingly pretty. The finale, "Yes, Anastasia," reveals itself as the psychological profile of the fabled daughter of the Czar. The way Amos builds tracks is somewhat unconventional. She always records voice and piano first and then either adds complementary elements or lets the unadorned song stand alone. Some pieces receive subtle string arrangements, others get only bass and drums, and still others get a full band and/or an occasional "guest" vocalist. One song, "Bells for Her," is just her voice and prepared piano sounding something like a fuzzy celeste. The influence of Kate Bush on Amos is undeniable. She sometimes sounds more like Kate than Kate does. Equally clear is the confidence and pride Tori has in her own work. She revels in the fact that her work isn't "easygoing." With her albums, this and the previous Little Earthquakes, the listener's effort brings just rewards. Fans are advised to look for her generously bonus-tracked CD-5s. Nova Scotia's Sarah McLachlan's chief influence is Peter Gabriel, as she has often stated in interviews. Her voice has an inescapable sadness, and her songs veer toward romance in a classical poetry sense. As with her previous album, Solace, the recording is a collaboration with Pierre Marchand, a producer/musician with ties to Daniel Lanois. Marchand's greatest contribution is the Lanois-like mysterioso atmosphere that envelops McLachlan's songs and deepens them. Guitarist Bill Dillon is also an essential component. McLachlan's palette is narrower than Amos', but she always operates with an open throttle on her heart. "Ice Cream" provides a welcome, whimsically sweet change of pace. Among her strongest songs is "Possession," which bookends the album - fully produced in the beginning, and reprised much later as a hidden (you won't find it mentioned anywhere) piano and vocal interpretation seconds after the album's final and eponymous track. Nobody ever said that the good stuff would always hit you between the eyes. Sometimes - and Amos and McLachlan are good examples of this - the quality of the work is obvious, but to appreciate it fully, you have to become part of the creative process - a partnership that can potentially result in art. Songs about relationships, "I am so ordinary", her mom "Happy Home", a trek w/her man across the country "Oh John", about her home town and the tourists that invade it every year, "Bethlehem", a song about light and dark "Chiaroscuro" and even threw in a cover of Dolly Partons "Jolene" (according to Paula's intro Dolly kicks ass). Her voice is gorgeous the songs are incredibly personal and emotional. The songwriting honest and straightforward.
