Two of the participants have been mentioned in these electronic pages before: Penelope Houston and Linda Brady. The affair was a round-robin one; instead of six small four-song sets, all the performers were onstage at once and stood up one at a time to do a song -- a much better format than the usual. Everyone did three original songs and one cover (actually just part of a cover, because time was running out and another show was scheduled for the venue that night). It was Penelope's first solo performance EVER, accompanying herself on electric autoharp (she doesn't play guitar). She did "White Out", two new songs, and "Take Care" by Big Star. She has a new album, _Karmal Apple_ (her spelling), coming out soon. The new stuff sounds really good; can't wait to hear the full-band versions. Linda was great, as usual, even if she did have a chest cold (she *always* seems to be sick right before a major performance). Again, I urge you all to pick up her album; it's a gem, and she needs all the support she can get. Sound familiar? :) Em & I hung out with Linda & her partner W. (short for Warren; you can see why he goes by W) afterward. We stood within three feet of JWH, but didn't say hi. "Umm... well, I really like your music and.. um... I hope you have a new album coming out soon and umm... I guess that's it.." Isn't that how most conversations with celebrities go? Recent CD finds: _For The Beauty of Wynona_ by Daniel Lanois. Whoa! If I had gotten this album last year, it would have made my Top 10 *easily*. Permanently stuck in the CD player. _Aurora Gory Alice_ by Letters to Cleo. Not bad so far. I found this one for $4 at Amoeba. _October Project_. For some reason this was in the Clearance rack, shrinkwrapped, with a $5 price tag. I snapped it up before anyone realized their mistake. Now it's mine.. allll mine! Bwahahahah! Oh, it's pretty good, too. _Selected Ambient Works II_ by Aphex Twin. Cool noise. Em hates it. C'est la musique. "Possession" single by Sarah. The version of "Mary" on here is fantastic! She'll be in concert here on Monday. Can't wait! Also, the word on the net is that Vangelis is *finally* releasing the official, non-American-Symphony version of the "Blade Runner" soundtrack next month. It's one of the CDs that I don't listen to very often but when I do, I just listen to it all the way through and thoroughly enjoy every minute of it. >_October Project_. For some reason this was in the Clearance rack, >shrinkwrapped, with a $5 price tag. I snapped it up before anyone >realized their mistake. Hmm, I got mine there too, for $1.95, and it was shrinkwrapped too. You should be careful with Amoeba's clearance racks. I have found the exact same CD priced from $1.95 to $4.95 for no apparent reason. It's a random pricing thing which explains how I got an additional Mae Moore-Bohemia CD in its original canadian pressing (which has a different cover) shrinkwrapped for $1.99!! Though, nothing can get as chaotic as the Rasputin clearance store (open only on weekends) which sells Albums for .25, and CDs for .50. There is absolutely NO logic involved at what is being sold there, and absolutely no order in how things are displayed. It comes as close to music by the pound (which somebody posted about recently) as I have ever experienced. I occasionally buy vinyl there, even if I don't have a record player. For .25, it's worth it for the expanded cover art and the lyrics that are attached at some old Lp releases that are missing from CD re-releases. I was invited to go there with a friend who is in a band that will be performing there for 2 weeks and he couldn't really tell me much about it. I haven't decided to go yet. I've never travelled very far from the United States, but feel this might be an opportunity. If you have any information about this festival, please let me know. If you have anything on it, like a brochure or something like that, I would greatly appreciate you sending a copy to me. Let me know if you do and I will give you my mailing address. I will reimburse you for any copying and shipping expenses. In what has become an Ecto tradition, we send her a collective gift, a tape or three of music submitted by individual Ectophiles. Your selections should be guided purely by music that you think Happy (or even other Ectophiles) would like to hear. It does _not_ have to be Ecto-fodder, female vocalists, etc. Give it some thought, but don't overly worry about achieving perfection. You certainly can do better than "I'm Henry the VIIIth, I Am", which I placed on the 1993 edition of the Happy Birthday Project tape. :) Let's get wide variety and wide participation! Original music is especially welcome! [I didn't see it, but I've been told by an unimpeachable source that in her last newsletter, Happy implored all contributors of such original music to copyright it beforehand. I pass this along.] The Mechanics Please limit your musical selections to ten minutes. I'm going to be stricter about that limit this year, since practically everyone violated it last time (which shouldn't have been surprising in this musically passionate group :) ). Yet feel free to add "filler" music, music to fill in empty spots on the tapes, though I cannot guarantee that the filler will be used. One time I used every scrap of it (and then some) and the next I used none. Just make sure you _clearly_ identify which selections are your primary contribution(s) and which are your filler material. If you can, feel free to add a spoken personal greetings and/or introduction for your selections to your tape. If you can't but would like to add one, Mitch Pravatiner has volunteered to record any script you e-mail him [u15289@uicvm.uic.edu] in his mellifluous tones for eventual inclusion alongside your selection on the tape. Note that this introduction counts towards your 10min limit. Mail your cassette tape (C-100 suggested), holding your main selections, any filler material, and any introductions to me: Doug Burks 2036 W Plum St C7 Fort Collins CO 80521 USA Mitch Pravatiner has also volunteered to serve as the Grand Master of Ceremonies, playing the role of disc jockey tying together any loose ends, voicing any necessary introductions for others' selections, etc. I will compile the result, slipping in filler and other topical selections as required. The final result (possibly along with a gift) will be wrapped and mailed to Happy in time for her birthday. The deadline To give me more time to put together the best possible tape, the deadline will be earlier this year -- 15 July. However, don't wait until the last moment! Contribute early and often. :) The rewards Besides the good feelings of contributing to such a noble group effort and the joys of showing off your musical fine tastes to Happy and other Ectophiles, all contributors will receive a copy of the final project tape using their submitted tape plus one tape free from my tape dubbing project tape cache. I will also cover the postage and packaging. However, if the project extends onto a third (or fourth! :) ) tape, the extra tapes are available only under the usual tape dubbing project conditions. Non-contributing Ectophiles can procure copies of the final 1994 Happy Birthday Project tape through the tape dubbing project on the usual terms. The volunteers I am personally gift-wrapping-challenged. Would someone like to volunteer to take the final tapes and potential gift, nicely wrap them, add a card, and ship it off to Bearsville NY? The questions Adding a gift to the tapes adds a wonderful touch to the present, in my opinion. I open the floor for suggestions for such a gift. I have some questions I'd like to raise to this collected audience. What do you think about the future of the project? Do you like the current format? Is two projects a year too much? Any and all opinions and suggestions are solicited! The end If you have any questions or problems, just let me know! Eagerly awaiting to be inundated by a flood of submissions, I remain ... Subject: Comet crashes and other stuff... Hi all, I've been busy trying to keep up with Ecto and loads of other things lately. Here at work, we are gearing up for the comet collision with Jupiter in mid July. Special commands need to be written for the Hubble, since it's detectors are so sensative and we don't want to fry them by looking at bright Jupiter for a long time. :) We won't be able to see the impact, since it's hitting on the side away from us. But as Jupiter rotates, we should be able to see the effects and get some great photos. (I saw a recent photo of Jupiter taken with HST; it's breaktaking... :) ). It's been awhile since I've plugged the Happy Cards, and I just want everyone to know that I've still got plenty to give out. The people who have theirs seem to be happy with them. If you're wondering about them, either e-mail me or look in the Ecto classifieds...
