Date: Sat, 7 May 1994 19:36:41 -0500 (CDT) Now I know what y'all felt like when the digests were missing. Except we poor peons know what we're missing over in England *sigh* I did have an EctoOccasion of sorts yesterday - I went to O'Hare airport to see off Steve and have dinner with him and with Valerie. Every time she and I get together, we marvel at the fact that we live 2 buildings away and rarely see one another. Although I'm not what anyone would consider the most gregarious person, it was nice to get to talk to Steve. He made his way to his plane, and enroute to the Kon, and Valerie and I consoled ourselves with a trip to the Cool Thing. I hadn't seen it, and yes, it _IS_ the Cool Thing. Nothing important to say, I just miss Ecto :) Kath ======================================================================== From: mklprc@aol.com Date: Sat, 07 May 94 23:28:23 EDT Subject: New life form spotted > From: snpf@lucid.com (Sarah Noelle Pratt Ferguson) > Subject: womyn's self-defense What's womyn? Is this a new form of self-defense training like jujitsu or daihatsu? =8+) Yeah, I know. It's a bigot term usually used by female individuals in English-speaking environments who so hate their opposite sex that they don't even want to write the word. (The problem doesn't arise where "femme" and "homme" are the terms.) I just thought I would never see it here in Ecto. Michael Pearce A politically incorrect personage -er- perdaughterage -er- perbeing...oh, forget it. None of which denies that there is a real reason that individuals of the female persuasion need self-defense training, nor that I wouldn't like to see would-be attackers dismembered on site by their intended victims, either. ======================================================================== From: "Neil K. It's a bigot term usually used by female individuals in > English-speaking environments who so hate their opposite sex that they don't > even want to write the word. (The problem doesn't arise where "femme" and > "homme" are the terms.) Nope. Actually "womyn" and its variants (wimmin etc.) are terms that some people choose to use because they're not comfortable with the fact that the structure of the English language can be seen as implying that men are the norm ("man" and "male") and that women are sort of exceptions to this norm. ("wo-man" and "fe-male" etc.) "Womyn" may be a rather grammatical artificial construct, but some people seem to like it. Many people complained about "Ms." twenty years ago. A few users of the term may indeed hate the other sex. I rather suspect that most do not, though I've seen no compelling evidence one way or the other. Have you any evidence to support your claim that the term "womyn" is used mainly by women who hate men? I think a pretty good argument could be made that the term is used by people who are unhappy with the structure of language; not necessarily unhappy with men per se. > I just thought I would never see it here in Ecto. I just never thought I'd see nasty words like "bigot" and men-hating flung around ecto in response to a perfectly ordinary post. If you don't like the word "womyn," don't use it. - Neil K. My fear came about by the return of my entire collection of Kate Bush CDs, which had been lent to a friend of mine six months ago. So for six months I had been Kateless. Yes I do remember those things called tapes, but when you destroy tapes in about a month, it takes a lot of motivation to keep recording new selections of music. Anyway here I was about to agian listen to a godess, and I was nervous. Well after listen to Danielle Dax, Dalbello, J. Sibrey, K Heresh, Curve, Cocteau Twins, Judas Preist, P. Gabriel, the Art of Noise, Enya, David Bowie, and the list continues, but you get the picture. There's a musical depthness that I thought Ms Bush didn't have, or at least couldn't remember. So here I was holding my first in a line of CDs, with aprehension. When I heard the first note I was holding my breath, but sure enough I soon got into the groove of The Kick Inside. That's when I started cursing myself for being such a musical whimp. You see 'cause if I didn't like Kate now, or if she'd lost some of her charm, then the musical journey which started with her ten years ago would die, well for me anyway. But we've got a happy ending to this saga. I had to explain it to people who would understand, thanks for you tolerance. Fre|>eric Please note all speeing mistakes are due to the fact that I don't have Lit Degree and fell asleep during English. This made me the perfect candidate for an Mechainical Engineer. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 9 May 94 03:23:10 +1000 From: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) Subject: Re: Frente! and Milla, too. I've been out of touch for a while. Somehow, I haven't found the time to read my mailing lists lately. But I figured there was just too much good stuff going on, and I was likely to miss it. With regard to "The Mask and Mirror," I was in my (new) favorite record store yesterday, and heard something Irishy with a nice viola solo. Turns out it was Loreena--I never heard her before. I liked it; I bought it. She (at times) reminds me of Sarah McLachlan, except Loreena's voice doesn't crack in that Sinead-like yodel Sarah does. Good music. I'm a sucker for violas. I won't have much time to spend on the net for a while. I have a lot to catch up on following my return from Chicago. But I would like to take just enough time to publicly thank the wonderful Ectophiles who helped to make my stay in Chicago so much fun. Chicago is a great town but my trip was made even better by the warmth and generosity of my Ecto friends there! On the basis of my experience, I can thoroughly recommend a visit to Chicago as an experience not to be missed. In particular I want to mention the following Chicagoans: Mitch: for a compendious list of things to do, complete with incredibly detailed instructions on how to get to places, for introducing me to "Buffalo Wings", and for valiant efforts (in the face of incomprehension on my part) to explain the intricacies of the Chicago bus network. Mike (mjm): for "marking my card" with the essential tourist things to do in the City, particularly for the advice (of which I made full use) on how to best appreciate the City skyline - do "Wendella" give you a commission? Chip: for an excellent Korean meal, for driving, and for suggesting the bar on top of the Hancock Centre - a perfect place from where to see the City at night. Kathleen: for coming out to O'Hare to see me off and joining me in a farewell meal. Vickie: for being Vickie, for meeting me at the airport, for playing me all sorts of interesting new music and then taking me CD shopping (!), and for a superb Mexican meal. Valerie: a special thank you for giving up so much time from a heavy schedule, for getting me to Sarah's in-Store appearance, for taking me out to the ball game, for the Swedish meal (complete with genuine Nordic beer - brewed in Ontario, Canada), for the Metra information, and for taking me back to O'Hare.
