Mylene Farmer German Sampler Tape - Announcement & Contents ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 3 May 1994 11:11:15 CDT From: Subject: That was the weekend that was (part 2): The melodrama continues (continued) Friday evening, I finally unwrapped the copy of _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_ I'd bought on sale at Tower the previous month, while waiting for Sam Phillips' in-store. My profoundest initial impression at that moment was of a vaguely citruslike aroma that wafted from the insert--the first time I'd smelled it since the 1960s, which was the first time I bought significant numbers of LPs, many of whose jackets also smelled like that. It apparently is in the glossy coating on the sundry packaging in question. I felt too fatigued at that point, however, to listen to the CD immediately, and elected instead to sleep. I finally woke up around 6 Saturday morning, and concatenated the FTE CD, my CD player, and my backup headphones, whose cord my cat had mercifully refrained from chewing through. Between the tiny handwriting in which the lyrics are printed on the insert, and the apparent misalignment of my crypto-trifocals (or "progressive lenses," as the optometrist called them), I gave up on trying to follow the lyrics visually, and concentrated on stroking my cat, who had magnanimously chosen to sit still on my lap for the time being. As always, the fine details of the album have not stayed with me very much after only a sing- le playing, particularly those that came after my cat jumped off my lap and made some low-key moves toward the headphone cord; but like all or most of the music I've been introduced to as a reader of these pages, it was good. A few hours later, after attempting to rest up a little more, the #6 which contained me at the time made its way through the rain, and I transfered downtown to the subway. I thought I'd caught Valerie in an error when she cautioned us all, in these pages, to be sure to catch the A train in order to get to North and Clybourn. On the weekends, all trains stop at all operative (an important contingency, as we shall see) stations, so the A/B train term drops out of the equation. When the train left Clark and Division, I prepared to alight at the next station, and was surprised to hear the announcement that Fullerton was next, until it finally remembered that the North and Clybourn station is closed weekends. I resolved to switch to the opposite track at Fullerton, take the southbound Ravenswood train to Armitage, and walk the remaining two blocks down Sheffield to the strip mall where Best Buy is. I ended up exiting from the wrong end of the platform, landing on the street in front of Demon Dogs. I didn't eat prior to leaving home, knowing I'd be doing so in significant measure later in the afternoon, and had gotten hungry again in the meantime. I went inside, purch- ased a milkshake, and decided to walk the addditional four blocks down Sheff- ield in lieu of wasting additional time waiting for the Ravenswood. Needless to say, when I reached the next corner I noticed the same train I'd just opted not to take, but which I could have caught had I chosen to take it, pulling out of the station. I finally got to the three-way intersection of Sheffield, Willow and Clybourn, pitched my paper cup in a can appropriately marked "court- esy of Demon Dogs," and wended my way through the parking lot to Best Buy. Once inside, I located the record department, and scanned the horizon for some- thing resembling an autograph line. I finally found it, and searched for familiar people. Sarah McLachlan was seated at a table in front of a shelf full of small electronics, annotating posters, CD booklets, and so on with a few words apiece, generally ending in the glyph "[peace sign]+[heart]=[happy face]," which I interpreted to mean "peace+love=happiness." (I didn't bother with the line myself, having brought nothing autographable, but noticed what was written on items others had had signed.) I don't know how much of her musical interlude, if any, I might have caught had it not been for the misad- venture with the rapid transit. If I had it to do over, I might have started out earlier. In any event, I thought to myself, "I'm sure she sounds just as good live as she does on record :-)," and was prepared to use that line on any- body who questioned my priorities in not getting there in time for the whole show in the first place. It impressed me, in any event, that an artist of some stature was sitting a few yards away from me, dressed in a t-shirt, cardigan sweater and ripped jeans, hair pulled back casually, no apparent makeup, signing autographs amid a motley array of store shelves. A lot of headliners would probably consider that beneath them. I finally noticed Valerie, or vice versa, depending on which one of those things actually happened despite my imperfect recall :-). I asked whether any others had fallen victim to the same error as I, which she admitted was indeed the case. I observed that in addition to my failure to notice a more significant error in her instructions than the one that actually occurred to me, I had failed to remember and point out that the Goose Island Brewery, a highly regarded microbrewery and restaurant with a variety of beers brewed on the premises, was in the next block, and would have been the ideal place to hold the day's next ecto-event. Valerie replied that the relatively distant Gino's East had been a conscious choice, inasmuch as Steve had not had the opp- ortunity to try Chicago-style pizza the last time he was in town. She then caught up with some friends, and I scanned the line for other ectophiles, finally being hailed by someone in a cluster whose members included Chris, Vickie, Steve, and Elizabeth. Since I wasn't in the market for an autograph, I browsed in a couple of other departments, until the line thinned out and the people I knew also began milling about. I asked Vickie whether Steve had succeeded in reaching his hotel, the apparent opacity in practice of my direc- tions notwithstanding. She answered that they had indeed gotten where they were going, thanks to the exegesis of the environment outside the bus that a friendly fellow-traveler had given them. Sundry small talk was exchanged among the sundry members of our crowd, and we were eventually joined by another indi- vidual whom I didn't know personally, but who reportedly is a regular on our IRC channel. He managed to get into the autograph line just under the wire, after a period of uncertainty WRT whether he'd be able to, during which the old slogan of Gordy Records (a Motown subsidiary), "It's what's in the groove that counts," re-entered my consciousness for the first time since 1966--a sure indicator of the urgency I feel about getting my own CD booklets autographed :-). Numerous photos were taken of numerous store personnel with Sarah, who was also observed autographing the flesh of a fan who, we later learned, had an appropriate tattoo (or something to that effect). Ultimately, we all were reunited, and considered how to get to Gino's. Under the ultimate game plan, a friend of Valerie's drove one load of people down to Michigan Avenue, then came back for the rest. I found that out after waiting for some time with Chris _et al._, at which time it occurred to me that I could decrease the load factor in the car, amortize the investment in my CTA pass a little further, and maybe even get there a little before the second shift by taking the bus down. So I took my leave of the others, and sauntered down to North and Sheffield. I got there just as a bus arrived, and rode down North Avenue sort of full of myself, having demonstrated how quickly and easily we all could have reached the next destination on public transportation. As the end of the line loomed just across Clark Street, I asked the driver whether there was any closer stop for the 151 (which goes to Michigan Avenue) than North and the Outer Drive. I learned that by following a path through Lincoln Park under a nearby overpass, I would reach such a stop. I headed for the first overpass I saw in that general direction, and failed to find a bus stop. I doubled back, and finally saw a southbound 151 approaching a stop near a different overpass, closer to the Historical Society. Fortuitously, the light changed in my favor, and I was able to catch it. My journey to Gino's would soon be complete. The bus eventually reached Chicago and Michigan (it doesn't stop at Superior, where Gino's is). I got off, walked the rest of the way, and was mildly sur- prised to see the members of the initial haul still congregated in front. I learned that their chauffeur had been laboring under the misimpression that the destination was on Ontario, three blocks south, rather than Superior; and that this had delayed both their arrival, and the beginning of the return trip to Best Buy. I also learned that they had assumed that I'd be riding with the second load, and thus able to navigate for them. I immediately developed the queasy feeling that by the simple decision to take the bus, I had single- handedly changed the course of Ecto history :-). Valerie finally got the in- spiration to call Best Buy, and have our friends in their entranceway paged. In the meantime, my immediate companions began to tire of standing in the cold and the rain, and asked the restaurant employee who was managing the traffic at the front steps what our options were. They finally decided that we'd go in immediately, order for the estimated ultimate size of our group, and trust to luck that the others would finally find the place. As we went inside, I noticed Valerie at a payphone, apparently on an extended hold. Yup, one measly dollar. I found it at the Maxwell St. market, a historical flea market known for being a first step for immigrants climbing the economic ladder. You can find absolutely anything there, even the kitchen sink (I saw 2 of those). And apparently you can even find Kate. Almost made up for the dreadful lecture later that morning, the one thsat made me an hour late to pick up Steve Fagg for the ballgame. :( ==> valerie ============================================================================ iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu "Patience, Iago. What a fun day in Chicago! First was the in-store appearance at Best Buy. The store is your typical throw-all-the-appliances-together-in-a-maze type of store, and they put Sarah on a stage at least 4' high, so she seemed distant. Oddly, it was more intimate at the show later that night. The folks at BB need to learn a lot from Tower about in-stores. They were completely disorganized, and probably didn't expect the crowd they got. But, these things are minor compared with the performance there. She played 3 songs: Ice Cream, The Path of Thorns (Terms) and Good Enough. All only with acoustic guitar. Mmm...Really nice. And Sarah was casual -- jeans with a huge hole around the knee, sweater and clear, shiny Mardi Gras beads. After singing, they set up an autograph table and pen in hand, she took aim. By now we were Chris, Vickie, Stacey, Elizabeth, me, my friend Donna, Mitch (who came while we were waiting in line), Steve Fagg, Chad (also came later)...I hope I'm not forgetting anyone! There may have been more, but, um, well, the El stop I had told everyone to use was closed on the weekend. :( More later on my direction sense (or lack thereof). Sarah was _really_ friendly. I came prepared, asking a dopey question about how she got started for a friend who was writing a profile of Sarah for a class. But Sarah was very cool about my oh-so-common question, and good quotes were had by many. As my friend Katharine remarked, "She's a great interview!" But the best response was when Chris walked up there -- Sarah took one look at him and said, "I know you!" ah, the benefits of being a fan of many years... The oddest thing anyone had signed was a tattoo. One guy had the whole angel from the cover of the Live album tattooed on his back, about 7" in length. So Sarah signed her artwork! $20 says that he went straight to a tattoo parlour to make it permanent! And his female companion had some sort of tattoo on her butt that she asked her to sign. Sarah did. And I wondered why she wrote a song called, "Possession." :) After we all had a good laugh, we decided to head out for pizza at Gino's East. Mitch does a really good job of describing the mixup on this one, so I'll spare y'all from rehashing it. I was pretty bummed at myself at this point for screwing up the directions so much (although my El directions were correct for getting to Gino's from a different El stop). :( Pizza. Mmm good. Pepperoni, Sausage and Spinach (not on the same pie!). Need I say more? Vickie was going crazy with the marker...you see, Gino's East is a pretty odd place. They _encourage_ enhancing their decor with your innermost thoughts. The walls, the tables, even some of the glasses all contain pithy thoughts. So Vickie, feeling particularly thoughtful, enhanced some of their pitchers and cups with the names of many ecto goddesses. So some lucky person is someday going to post to ecto the revelation that they saw Happy's name at the restaurant. :) And rest assured, ectophiles (ftephiles? sarahphiles?), the restaurant really allows Vickie's creativity. We got out of the restaurant into the pouring rain and made an executive decision: taxis. After the distinctly yellow ride to the venue, we found Kathy and company waiting in line. Perfect timing. And thankfully a few cups of hot coffee kept us going until we got inside. The concert itself? Amazing, incredible...all the things you expect from Sarah. It was her standard set list, which if anyone really wants I can e-mail. No sign of Elsewhere, Meredith. :( But at least her voice was better than when I saw her in NY, and there were no empty record-executive seats on the floor. We got an ecto/fte section going in the first row of tables (I think the same table as they sat at for Tori). The first highlight was when Sarah came back on stage during the encore wearing Stacey's ring. She had tossed a letter to Sarah, wrapped with the ring, on stage earlier, and Sarah apparently got it. Hurrah! And the other highlight was the official crowning of Luc as jedi-master apparent. Stacey and I tried yelling loud, but palindrome man (mike) was the intelligent one: he yelled it during the lull in applause. I have to admit that I didn't catch Luc's reaction, but I'm certain he heard it. After the show we grabbed some food at Melrose Restaurant (not related to Melrose Place...). And so it went. A good time (and long day) was had by all. Looking forward to repeating it again... ==> valerie ============================================================================ iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu "Patience, Iago. Check out Aurora Gory Alice if you like bands like Tribe, Arson Garden, Lemonheads. It took a while for it to grow on me but standout songs like 'I see' and the Joyride-like catchy 'Here and Now' dragged it out of my 'nothing special' pile of CDs. This posting is for them (and for anyone else who might be interested). I am new to this mailing list, so I do not know if this subject has already been discussed here. Anyway, I have some information concerning Mylene Farmer and her (soon to be released) first full lenght movie. The movie is called "Giorgino" and it is to be released around September 1994 in France. The movie is directed by Laurent Boutonnat, his name is familiar to all who know the magic of Mylene's videos. Needless to say, the expectations for his directional _movie_ debut are high. A lot is also expected from Mylene, who wishes to make it into the cinema. Being an actress has always been her dream and the preparations for this first movie of hers have been taking place for years. A good piece of news for those who do not speak French as their first language is that the dialogue of the film is going to be in English. Now Mylene (being born in Montreal, Canada) does not speak English very fluently, at least she _did_ not, so it should be interesting to hear how well she masters this foreign language. I do not have very much information with regarding to the plot of the movie. All I know is that it is said to be a romantic love story set in the previous century. Mylene plays a girl called "Catherine", who has hard time leaving her childhood behind her. The atmosphere of "Giorgino" seems to be very dark and moody and I do not suppose we can expect any "happy endings" here. Mylene is quite obsessed with death, sadness and melancholy. The movie was shot in Hungary the last year and they are currently making and mixing the music for the film in the Mega-studios of Paris. If somebody reading this happens to know anything more about the movie "Giorgino" (or about Mylene in general), PLEASE contact me.
