Any concerts--mainstream or local I should check out while in the area? Any unusual events going on? I'll be visiting a good friend of mine who also likes good music, but I doubt is as conncted to the music scene as some of you are. SO if there's anything going on I should know about, I'd appreciate the info. Thanks a lot! There will be lots of interesting music at local clubs, but the papers that cover that week aren't out yet. I've been on ecto a couple of months now and have yet to post, mainly because I had not even heard of Happy Rhodes when I joined. A fellow netter recommended ecto for it's lively and friendly conversation and its' other Happy-related topics (Tori, Sarah Mc etc.). Btw, thanks to whomever (Vickie, I believe) posted the Tori tour dates; I will definetly be at the Warner Theater in DC on June 20 (yes, Josh, I'm working on getting tickets). Anyway, and I have a point here, Jeff asked in ecto #1099: "... any other geographers out there?" Well, I am one. And I guess I'm the only one as I haven't seen any other replies. I have a B.A. (Geneseo St. NY) and M.A. (Univ. of Vermont) in said subject, and currently work making pretty maps for the Justice Department. It seems like an odd match, but we do important work here, just like all guvment workers. :) Anyways, for those in the know, I'm in ARC/INFO hell most of the day. Say Jeff, what are you going to do with that GIS/MLS degree? Nuf 'bout me. I enjoy ecto a lot, particularly the discussions on new artists/bands. The whole 'chick music' scene is pretty new to me; I'm still mainly stuck in the '70s listening to U.K. progressive bands (King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graf Generator, to name a few). As my ears have been frippified for years, the pleasant tones created by Happy, Tori, Sarah, et. al. have taken a little getting used to. I have "Warpaint" and I like it, though I was little surprised with the overall electronic nature of the music. What should I consider buying next? Okay, I guess that's enuf for now; don't want to overstay my welcome. You will probably hear me drone on in the future. The ectophiles are pretty cool, methinks. They were to summarize the article and point out the important scientific elements, including hypothesis, independent & dependent variables, control groups, etc. Then they were to summarize the results and critique the study. Here's what I got: "Out of the twenty-six subjects, twenty-four were whites and two were blacks, at the start of the experiment." "In a good survey experiment there has to be a sample, and a representative of the large population." "The students were of no particular race, however, the majority were white. (20%)" "The conclusion to this experiment was that sex, family income, and mathematical preparation were all nonsignificant." "Autistic children have always drawn an interest in me." "Patients treating physicians in both groups prescribed them psychotropic medications." "This experiment doesn't seem to have the hardcore data just absolutely proving their research is correct. You'll have that problem with psychoanalytic experiments though." "I understood the jest of it, but I occasionally got confused about the meaning of some words and the way the researchers were using them." "The research question that I chose was the one about summarizing the journal article that I found." "They ranged from 17-25 years with 50.5% of them men and 49.5% women." "The wonderment I have been faced with is the line between exceptance and rejection of marijuana and the other psychological boundaries that may intertwine with these feelings." "I am left unanswered to the perceived harmfulness on female users, but I would guess that the same notions exist among female users as among male users." In the second paper I assigned, I found this: "Marge, intern, did not see herself as worthwhile." One of my professors related that she is very concerned to hear, from several sources, that there was a serious problem in the middle ages with something called "Bubonic plaque". Apparently, that's why so few people were able to keep their own teeth. Okay, Now for a death and baseball joke (I don't mean this to be tasteless, it's just that I have no good celebrity gossip. Why are Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel calling it quits, anyway?) Joe and Fred are good friends, and great baseball fans (me,too. I live for this season.) Anyhow, they see all the games together and talk nothing but ERAs, RBIs and trades. So, they make a pact, that whichever of them dies first, they will try to return from the great beyond and let the other know whether there is baseball in heaven. So, Joe dies first, and sure enough, one day after his funeral, Fred is reading his baseball e-mail (I made that part up), and who should appear, but the ghost of Joe. Fred says, "Well? Is there baseball in heaven??" Joe says, "Fred, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that there _is_ baseball in heaven. The bad news is, you're pitching on Friday." This joke was told by our Death and Dying professor. I liked it so much that I went out and bought Swing the Statue when it came out (on CD). I don't like that one quite so much. Swing the Statue is good too, but it just doesn't seem to have quite the charm that Happy Come Home does. If you really like Victoria, or want to hear what she's like without spending alot of money, try the Jane Siberry Miscellaneous I tape from Doug Burks tape tree. She is part of the Jane Sibberry Choral Christmas (with Jane, Holly Cole, Mary Margaret O'Hara, and Rebecca Jenkins). It's an excellent show and Victoria really shines. The whole tape is excellent. The song Victoria wrote for the show--O Holy Thing (or A Holy Thang as Holly Cole quips), is spectacular. I know--I've plugged it here before, but until you all order it, I'll keep doing it. :) I actually sent off an order to Doug today for another copy (I gave mine away in a fit of random acts of kindness--then really missed it). Yes, it's predominantly Christmas music, but hey, its good. And I found myself playing it a lot. So, enjoy!
