The album was called "Madra", and contained mostly accapella renderings of traditional madrigals, and I think a couple of originals. It was released on Mute Records in the UK and is still easily available; if you have trouble picking one up (or a copy of Suspiria) I can fetch you one from here in Australia. The single from "Madra" was "Gush Forth My Tears", reworked in dance mode by the likes of The Orb and Pascal Gabriel. Madrigals with an ambient dance beat! Almost totally improvised, too. I'll join in the defense of Vangelis: He's made some very interesting music. And the track "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" is great (are those samples from "The Maltese Falcon" (and other movies) or reconstructions?). And I'd really like to have the lyrics to "Back to School"... > One of Cyndi's best songs is "All Through the Night", written by that > great underrated songwriter, Jules Shear. Meredith notes: > The new Cranes album seems incredible, judging by the previewing I > got to do today. Definitely worth checking out. This album got a fine review in Politiken last week: The new reviewer I mentioned a couple of weeks ago seems to have Ectoish tastes... About the "names" thread: Brage is a pretty unusual Danish name (there are 7 of us listed in the phone book, 4 of which belong to my immediate family) and as it is quite close to the Danish word "brag" which means a loud sound (like a thunder crash) I had to listen to a "few" jokes back in school... Nowadays, I like it though: It's a much better identifier than my first name, Jens (which is very common), so most of my friends calls me Brage. This doesn't protect against quite a lot of innovation in how to spell the name, though! ;-) About the name itself: In Danish, we have a term, "bragesnak" (i.e. "brage talk") which means to talk non-sense or ramble (which, of course, in no way reflects on the contents of my postings! ;-)). Consequently, I was rather surprised to find this entry in Webster's: "Bragi, n. Scand. Myth, the god of poetry and music, a son and principal counselor of Odin, and the husband of Idun. Also, Brage." I wonder what the poor god did to originate the term "bragesnak"! :-) [Odin (a.k.a. Wotan) is the "head" god, Idun is the goddess of youth. Coincidentally, I cooperate with a company called IDUN-Soft... :-)] ObHappy [yes, there actually something Happy related! ;-)]: While I was in Budapest, a guy stopped me on the street because he wanted to read my t-shirt. And yes, I was wearing the AG t-shirt! :-) So I gave him a fast sales talk about Happy's music. Unfortunately, I did not have the AG address on me... :-( I also talked to a guy at the conference I attended about Ecto in general, and I may have got him interested in Happy. We'll see, perhaps Happy will have a new fan in Austria soon... Morale: Always wear AG's address! ;-) Perhaps we should have AG supply us with stacks of the small card (sometimes) included with "Equipoise". Or perhaps Ecto should develop a business card (the AG card is a bit too large) for use in our campaigning... ;-) Jens P. I also bought their album, and it is wonderful. They have a number of styles represented in their music, giving a variety including various combinations of Irish rock (a la Pogues), some reggae influences (mostly the more rappish-reggae style), some L.A. style stuff-almost grungish-their was once song I was calling the Red Hot Chili Pogues). Their lyrics represent a mixture of NYC street life with Irish protest and other Irish life. The DBE was created in 1971 by five string musicians from the Royal Opera Orchestra in Stockholm. They play on original Baroque instruments, Sparf's violin is made by Cornelius Kleyman in 1680.
