It would seem that I misinterpreted what I read in one of his posts on the matter, and became confused about the true relationship. (It all reminds me a little of certain dialog delivered by Faye Dunaway in _Chinatown_ :-), but that's neither here nor there.) Several of you have commented on my error of fact WRT Vangelis, whose music I know only through the _Chariots of Fire_ theme--apparently not the best exemp- lar of his work. Somehow, that seems to support Alan's point about commercial- ization's deleterious effects on an artist. It is interesting that my first impression of Vangelis would apparently have fit Yanni more accurately. The only work of his I'm familiar with is the theme music for _World News Now_-- not the worst music on earth, but certainly nothing special. At least it has the saving grace of being the bottom half of a segue with Barry Mitchell's "World News Polka" once a week when they run the full set of credits. My "lettuce-washer" reference, BTW, was derived from an article that appeared in early 1988, I think, in the arts section of the _Chicago Sun-Times_. It was about New Age music in general, and that of Andreas Vollenweider (remember him?) in particular. A number of sources reported their view that the genre was essentially muzak for yuppies; one lay consumer of the form reported that she liked to listen to it as she washed lettuce. The rest, as they say, is history :-). Turning, at last, to unrelated matters: I read in the paper yesterday that WBEZ is tripling the length of Stuart Rosenberg's Saturday afternoon show. Undoubtedly he'll be on the lookout for more material to fill the expanded hole. Happy's publicity mill, IMHO WIVH, could do far worse than to get busy on this thing. Off to pick up the special order from the bookstore, then go home and be sick-- the virus that's been simmering for weeks seems finally to have started to percolate. Wow, it's Christo's birthday, Martin's still alive (we worry about 76-year old cello instructors), Anthony Horan's aboard ship (Hi!), and who knows what all else is going on in upside-down land. Hooray for centrifugal force!! ("u"? I looked it up even. Who's the doofus-head who said it was spelled with a "u"? Well, whoever he was, I'm sure he doesn't live in Australia, which is spelled weird too because I always want to spell it like Austrailia, you know, trail, as in "Happy Trails To You" which doesn't make sense either, I mean, what's a happy trail and if it's not happy no one would go down it anyway and it would get all overgrown with weeds and stuff and would get lost, to be discovered hundreds of years later by people who think "oh cool, here's a trail that our ancestors used, let's go down it" and very shortly they realize that it's an unhappy trail and quit going down it and then it will get overgrown again just waiting for another silly archaeologist-type who's happy as a clam going through thousands of years old garbage finds it and wastes a lot of time trying to prove that the trail was, indeed, happy after all but he can't quite figure out why but he's sure of his theory so has to come up with rationalizations while he gets paid to wander around ancient trails which is a lot more fun than the linguists back in their stuffy cubicles who have spent billions of hours and money trying to figure out why "arch(a)eology" is spelled two different ways in my spelling dictionary and if it's pronounced two different ways too but at least they don't have to worry about weedy, overgrown, unhappy trails which lead to Australia which is not spelled with an "i" unless maybe it was supposed to be that way but someone somewhere along the way was asleep at the switch and they spelled the name of the country wrong on some really official form and it became common usage just like all the Americans whose ancestors came over from some other country and they stopped into Ellis Island, not that they really had a choice back then, and some dippy, harried clerk who couldn't sleep the night before because the people upstairs were fighting again and throwing things at each other and they really didn't care that everybody else in the building had to go to work in the morning and they didn't even know that the guy downstairs worked at Ellis Island and if they did they'd be really mad because they came over on boats from the Old Country when they were kids and some dippy, harried clerk just like the guy downstairs couldn't understand what their parents were saying when they gave their names and the guy didn't even bother to ask how it's supposed to be spelled and because it was almost lunchtime and the line was still godawfully long he wrote down anything that popped into his head which caused numerous problems decades later when the whole family sat down to watch _Roots_ and got interested in tracing the genealogy of the family but couldn't figure out what the hell was going on because the spellings were all weird but at this point the couple upstairs didn't know that their families were going to be tracing their history and they had no interest in doing it themselves because at the time television hadn't been invented yet and Alex Haley wasn't even a twinkle in his parent's eyes but the couple still would have been mad at the guy downstairs because he personified everything that was wrong with an America that could just take your name and change it or change the spelling at the whim of a dippy, harried clerk who was downstairs trying to sleep, which was futile, so the next day at work he changed all kinds of names and he actually got a bit of a thrill because it was almost a god-like power he had over people but it was a dim thought and he didn't quite understand the full concept of it all, just like the guy in Austrailia who changed the spelling to Australia because he thought it was more aesthetically pleasing as a written word but he didn't mess around with the pronunciation because that would have gotten him in deep doodoo and he looked around and realized that no one noticed and no one really cared about the spelling anyway because everyone called it "Oz" even though Dorothy never set foot in Australia and it's doubtful that Frank Baum did either though no one really knows for sure, so the spelling changer decided to fool around with other spellings too and slipped an "a" into "archaeology" but that got all the archaeologists who were looking for happy trails and old garbage up in arms and they were going to find the guy and lynch him but the guy found out and beat a hasty retreat to America where he had his own name changed and he was so confused that he went a little crazy and couldn't find a real job and so ended up making up names for Route 66 motels and so, though no one really remembered his shennanigans in Australia he finally found his claim to fame when he coined the name...
