I really like it. The Mercy Street remix is a very effective combination of a boppy sort of beat to a dark and mysterious melody. I think it works really well, and the Until the End of the World BoE version is just, well, ... I was disappointed that the Annie Lennox wasn't on there. I also love the Moodswings song. It's "Rainsong" from (it says) the album _Moodfood_. If the rest of the album is this good, I want it! From: metatron!joe@dogface.austin.tx.us (Joe Zitt) Date: Tue, 18 May 93 02:32:26 CDT I snarfed two good tapes yesterday: Peter Hammill's "and close as this" and Hugo Largo's "Mettle". Each was $1.88 at Camelot Music, so keep yer eyes peeled if you're interested. A note of (a little) interest re: Moodswing's "State of Independence": The tune was written and recorded by Jon Anderson and Vangelis on their album "The Friends of Mr. Cairo", and was a hit for Donna Summer sometime later. Well, back to my Wild Palms videotape... Damned if I know why critics are complaining the show's slow--I finding that if I miss 5 minutes, I'm baffled for the next hour! BTW, I had a bizarre dream last night in which I was producing an all-star cover version of Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" album. Happy was going to do "Starman" and Color Me Badd was going to do "Soul Love." Go figure... Yep, I've got it. It's not bad. Some of the songs are pretty weak, but some ("I Am God", "We Are Driven" come to mind) hit right on the mark. There's also a nifty 10-minute story told by The Weatherman about "Happy the Harmonica". It's not as knee-slapping as _A Big 10-8 Place_, but still eminently quotable. What's especially cool about this album is that Negativland's put it in the public domain-- you can copy it without fear of penalty. I bought one anyway as a show of support. RE: Moodswings I've got "Moodfood" too. If you're in the right mood for it, it can be quite cool. I remember when I heard "State of Independence" on the radio for the first time.. "HEY! That's a Jon and Vangelis song! and Chryssie Hynde's singing! What the heck!?!" :) By the way, the album that the original "State of Independence" is on, Jon and Vangelis' _The Friends of Mr. Cairo_, is quite good as well. Almost totally improvised, too. RE: Cyndi Lauper One of Cyndi's best songs is "All Through the Night", written by that great underrated songwriter, Jules Shear. It's on an album of his called _Demo-itis_, a collection of demos. There's also a demo of "If She Knew What She Wants" on it. In closing, I'd like to recommend _Dots Will Echo_ by Dots Will Echo. A really fun album by a band that it seems no one has heard of, even though they released their album on High Street REcords (a subsid. of Windham Hill). It's wise-guy rock, like Too Much Joy or Robyn Hitchcock. I like it a LOT. D^2 ======================================================================== Subject: Today's your birthday friend.... Dirk: "Where did you get it?" Thomas: "JPC. I saw it mentioned in the catalogue." (Klaus, you were not the only one :-) Dirk: "But how did you hear about her?" But I'm not as enthusiastic as Yngwe (Hi, Yngwe, if only I knew if you are male or female. Yngwe sounds like the German name Inge, so I suppose you are female. But I was wrong with Brni, too. I know that the gender is irrelevant but it's nice to know, though. Am I the only one who's having problems with names?) Another story: Sunday afternoon my phone was ringing: Phone: "Rrrrrrriinnnnnnnggg!" Dirk: "Hello?" Klaus: "It's Klaus, we thought it would be nice to have some ice-cream." Dirk: "...??? Which Klaus?" Klaus: "Klaus Kluge." Dirk: "Wow, you are here in Osnabrueck?" Klaus: "Yes, we came to see the exhibition." Klaus sent me a message on Friday but I couldn't read it, so I was lucky to be at home when he called. This shall serve two purposes: One, as has been noted by other...noteworthy...posters, I've been having problems getting posts through. Two: Saw Boiled in Lead at the Towne Crier in Pawling, NY, on Friday. For those who aren't familiar with BiL's vocabulary, "acoustic" means that Robin is NOT on the traps, but rather uses the dumbek, dourbakee, riq, and (not this time) tupan. Since Todd's left the band, the "acoustic" sets don't incorporate an electric guitar, though Drew is still on the electric bass (and dulcimer). The Todd replacement is Adam Stemple (Stephill????) who plays acoustic guitar (and electric maybe, though not Friday) and mandolin (though is wasn't working). They did a few songs from "From the Ladle to the Grave", some other stuff I'm not that familiar with, and even a Springsteen number (Mr. State Policeman?). Overall a good performance. The Towne Crier has a great "desert table" and is smaller and more intimate than IH. BiL is going to the studio for a new CD which should be out in the autumn. A word on Adam's voice. GreggAllman. Not what you'd expect of the BiL philosophy, but hey, maybe I'll get used to it.
