Big Hat just finished a Northeastern tour. I wish I'd known about it beforehand, I would have posted dates. I know for sure they played Boston, I don't know where else. I've had Lauren Christy's album for a couple of months (she was on the Jay Leno show and I bought it the next day.) I'm curious to hear your review. (btw, I recommend Praise also. I found it in a bargain bin the same day I bought the Lauren Christy. I've been meaning to say something about it, but I really didn't listen to it closely until they were mentioned again in Ecto. I've heard it 5 times now and, except for the first song which I don't like, it's just gotten better and better. Miriam's voice is beautiful, and the way she uses it is wonderful. I wish the first song hadn't putme off on the album for so long. Silly me. For Chicagophiles looking for this, there were quite a few copies in the bargain bin at Dr. Wax Records. It cost $2.99. They also had copies of an album called _Head Music_ by a group called The Daou. It's another album that has grown on me. Vanessa Daou's voice is soulful and earthy and the music is...um..."dub torch" if that means anything.) > So the South African distribution deal is actually much more important > than it may seem at first. Ezust) Date: Sun, 16 May 93 13:48:36 EDT Subject: album review: Opium Den I am posting this, but I give permission to have it included in the ecto-music database... Review: Opium Den : "Diary of A Drunken Sun" A couple of weeks ago, I saw a couple of bands perform live with everson@bbn.com at the Middle East Cafe in Cambridge, MA. I was immediately impressed by them, so I bought their CDs immediately afterward. Opium Den is a Boston group, and it was celebrating its first CD release earlier this month. They're on "Hereafter Records" in Woburn, MA, distributed by Dutch East India Trading in NYC. I have no idea how widely available the music is. The lead singer, Annette Kramer, is very sensuous, with a voice which has a fairly wide range, which can sometimes remind me just a little of the lead singer of Sugarcubes (live, anyway - not so much on CD), but mostly it is her own voice, which I can't match up with any of the other female singers in my head. She is gloomy, but etherial, with a very good sense of pitch and mood. If you liked "Ribbed and Veined" by the Cocteau Twins, check this out: The music itself reminds me of an etherial version of Siouxsie and the Banshees from the early-to-mid 80s, perhaps if you threw in the occasional Cure-esque sound and recorded it at Ivo's 4AD studio for atmosphere. Basically it's nice gothic-alternative mid-to-late 80s revival with a female lead singer. The album as a whole doesn't tie together quite as much as I'd like, as there are about 3 or 4 songs which really don't work as well as the rest, but I like mid-to-late 80s revival myself, and this is a very young group, with a bright future ahead, so two thumbs up. -- | Alan Ezust depeche@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca Montreal, Quebec, Canada | |------------- McGill University School of Computer Science ----------------| "Lick the carpet, dust the dog, mow the windows, shine the socks... A. Ezust) Date: Sun, 16 May 93 21:04:55 EDT Subject: hats off to you As vickie indicated recently, Chicago-based group known as "Big Hat", has been touring around the country for the past few weeks. Here is the promised review... Lauren Christy is still coming up, but I want to get the press packet first and read her bio. Big Hat has two CDs out, with a third scheduled for release in the Fall. The two are called: Shimmer C'est La Mort CLM 038-2 (60 minutes) 1991 Inamorata March Records MAR 003 (40 minutes) 1992 I bought them both after seeing them live. I caught them while they were in Boston, playing at the Middle East Cafe in Cambridge, MA, earlier this month. Boston was one of the last dates they did, so while I had a list of all the tour dates, most of them had passed already. Otherwise, I would have posted the dates on the mailing list. It is a shame, as the group is quite impressive live. They will be doing a free outdoor concert somewhere in Chicago in June, if I'm not mistaken... Those of you who are in the area may want to make a point of being there for it. Big Hat presents a breath of fresh air - their style is unique - as far as I know, there are no other groups which are doing anything like Big Hat. The lead singer, Yvonne Bruner, who also writes the lyrics, has a very wide vocal range, which sometimes sounds like Anelli Marian Drecker, such as in the song "Seaside", with cute little trills which send shivers up my spine, but at other times sounds down and depressing more like Siouxsie Sioux in songs such as in "Jesus" or "Red Lines". This was the final act of the evening, which consisted of 3 other groups. One reason I was impressed was that they had absolutely NO guitar on the stage, while the previous 3 acts were almost 100% guitar/drum groups. Instead, Big Hat features Char-Malloy Baum on a 5-string electric violin, Preston Klik on the Trumpet and a "Melodica" (I think this is a xylophone which is suspended in the air by a clotheswire, but I could be mistaken), and Jim Stallman on percussion. "Shimmer" has no dancey songs on it, but a few jazzy ones. The mood it projects could be compared to Cocteau Twins, or maybe Matsui/Drecker, but it isn't like either of them. One song, "You Lied", is an absolute masterpiece - it's hypnotic, with the violin sounding almost Indian in style, and the synths just lift you up and take you flying through the clouds. Inamorata has a few remixes of songs on Shimmer, as well as some previously unreleased material. It is a little more up-beat. The remix of Flowers, called Flowerbox, reminds me of music by Single Gun Theory. Anyway, these folks deserve attention. Catch them if you can... You can mail-order their CDs. Inamorata $10 Shimmer $15 Hathead (casette) $10 (Add $2 for 1st class shipping and handling for any size order) Big Hat C/O Mad Millinery 5602 N. I saw it > for sale at the concert, but I decided that 2 CDs were my limit for that > night. Is the casette older stuff unavailable on CD or what? Great post about Big Hat, Alan! Everything on "HATHEAD" appears on the 2 CDs, it's just that the songs were re-recorded for the CDs. I'm glad that finally, someone Ectophilish not from the Chicago area has seen BH in concert. They've played so often in this area but are only now starting to branch out to other areas. I've seen them open for the Sundays, Julee Cruise and Mazzy Star; with Arson Garden and His Name Is Alive (saw that one with Kiri on New Year's Eve 1991); and alone a few more times. (My favorite one is still the first time I saw them when they opened for Mazzy Star. I'd never heard of them, and they'd only been together for a few months, but they BLEW AWAY Mazzy Star. The most interesting time was seeing them mesmerize a theater full of Sundays fans. The most perfect union was the Julee Cruise show. The most frustrating was the New Year's Eve show, but that was the fault of His Name Is Alive, who ruined the evening. The show I missed that probably would have been my favorite was the time they played with Moon Seven Times, but I was sick that night. The only show I walked out on was when the Psychowelders opened for them. The two bands do not go together and I just wasn't in a Big Hat mood after seeing the 'welders. Plus, we wanted to hang out with Rhondda & Co.) They're well worth seeing live, as Alan said. I just got the latest newsletter and upcoming dates are: May 21 Fri Chicago, IL China Club 27 Thu Columbus, OH The Dell 28 Fri Louisville, KY Tewligan's (w/ Zuzu's Petals) 29 Sat Lexington, KY Lynagh's June 4 Fri Milwaukee, WI Shank Hall (tentative) 5 Sat Cedar Rapid, IA CSPS Arts Center 18 Fri Schaumburg, IL Toto's 19 Sat Madison, WI UW Madison (free concert, outdoors) 25 Fri Chicago, IL Taste of Chicago (5:30pm, free, outdoors) July 18 Sun Minneapolis, MN Loring Block Party (free, outdoors) Alan provided mail-order information, and if you can only get one CD, I'd recommend "Shimmer" because it's got the best songs. "Inamorata" (IMHO) is mostly throw-away songs, with a few really good ones tucked in. "Shimmer" has the song "Garden of Edith"...'nuff said.
