So in principle, everything is observable. > i think that heisenburg has already shown (mathematically) that *not* everything is observable, that there is a certain point beyond which, even theoretically, the very act of observing alters the event. heisenburg showed that theoretically (should we ever develop the technology) we could know precisely the location of an electron, or precisely the velocity of an electron, but never both. in fact, the level of precision to which we know one is directly inverse proportional to how well we know the other, or something like that (i'm not a physicist, jim, i'm a philosopher!). stuff that is currently going on chaos theory also indicates some of this. given a complex system (and any system of interest is going to be a complex system), everything effects everything else, often with unpredictable and sometimes catastrophic results. according to this theory, it is possible that the air displaced by a butterfly's wings can cause, through a very complicated chain of events, a hurricane in the carribean. however, the butterfly's actions are not (except in the most trivial sense) observable. ok, away from "hard" sciences and into "soft" sciences. anthropologists have come to realize that the very act of observing a culture causes a change in that culture, and a change in the behavior of the persons in that culture. so the best that an anthropologist can hope for is to try to affect their subjects as little as possible, and when i read a text of theirs, what i get is *my* interpretation (coming from a particular cultural and philosophical background) of *the anthropologists* interpretation (coming from *her/his* cultural background, philosophy, writing style, editor, etc.) of the behavior of certain persons in the presence of someone whom they know is watching them. baudrillard cites instances where people have gone into isolated communities in order to observe them, and ten years later or so, the community suddenly becomes extinct, as the sudden influence of some other object (the observers) drastically changes the object which it is observing. sociologists (i forget who; i loaned the book out years ago to someone who is now in utah) have extended this analysis to practitioners of the "hard" sciences, where personal preferences, political structures, "fads" and etc all had subtle effects on what was considered "true" at the time. this, they claim, is a necessary condition of being human. >>All of this of course ties in with the issue of the nature of the >>"ether" which was much discussed back then (until Einstein's special >>theory of relativity came out), and perhaps also the discoveries in >>(what became) quantum physics, that the system and the observer isn't >>independent. > >Sometimes it isn't even clear what should be called the observer and what >should be called the system. Of course, the theory should give the same >results in both cases. This also ties in with what I said above about the >importance of the observer. > however, often the result is *different* depending not on the system, but on the *observer*. a theory that doesn't take this into account can no longer be considered adequate. >>Of course, the black box model still isn't universally accepted: The >>discussions on the possibility of machine intelligence is a good >>example of this... > >Uhm... This sounds interesting, but what is the connection between the >black box model and the possibility of machine intelligence? I so loved the fact that a goddess like Happy was living within a few miles of me. :( Lynn, will you be able to make the Birmingham, MI record store appearance? --Pamela ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 18 Thu Apr 22, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF [Lynn] at 19:16 EDT Bob, I figured the Ann Arbor, MI station was playing Happy's music:) Thanks again for the radio info and name/address of the record store where she will be appearing. Pam, I wish the radio show were on a week-end or a bit later in the day. I'll have to think of a way to get it taped! I'm also going to plan on being at the Birmingham record store appearance and I'll let you know for sure as the date gets closer. By the way, my favorite Happy disc is still REARMAMENT...and so far, in second place is WARPAINT. LYNN ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 19 Thu Apr 22, 1993 M.TARR1 [Meredith] at 19:48 EDT Lynn, if you do go to the record store, could you do me a HUGE favor? Buy a package of Junior Mints (I'll pay you back), give them to Happy, and say they're from me. Thanks. :) (Don't ask. I won't tell you.) Why do you like Rearmament? Details, woman, details! :) Pam, Bearsville isn't *that* far away from Albany, is it? I know it makes her a bit closer to where I live, so I'm not complaining. And the Woodstock area is massively cool. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 20 Thu Apr 22, 1993 R.LOVEJOY1 [Bob] at 20:44 EDT I don't know the whys and wherefores of the move. I know the Albany area fairly well, and I know a little of the Woodstock region, so I might guess geography... I know Happy had family in the Albany area. Her Mom lives in Virginia now, so I guess there's nothing to keep them there. Happy's manager works out of NYC, and Bearsville is a lot closer. Still, she's closer to you than to me! Bob ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 21 Thu Apr 22, 1993 R.LOVEJOY1 [Bob] at 20:56 EDT Lynn, if you have a VHS machine, you might be able to plug your receiver into it and use its timer to record! If you think this might be remotely feasable but don't know how to do it, I may be able to help. I do this all the time. If you have a HiFi model, it sounds great at all speeds; if not use SP for decent sound! Bob PS Happy is on the WORLD CAFE tomorrow 4/23, on APR.... I'll be taping with VHS HiFi! ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 22 Thu Apr 22, 1993 T.ADAMSON [Todd] at 23:22 EDT Two things First, in the span of two short weeks I've become fanatical about Happy Rhodes. I need more. Can someone post her complete discography. Second, any know if she will be swinging through the midwest, particularly the Des Moines/Ames area. Thanks. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 23 Fri Apr 23, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF [Lynn] at 20:31 EDT ok,ok...Rearmament details! :) Keep in mind that I have had the 6 cd's only a month or so....I could change my mind here, but so far my favorites are all from this cd. First of all, 'Til The Dawn Breaks is one of those songs that just "grabs you". It is the most intense song on the lp and her vocal range and the strength of her voice is incredible on this one!!! Another favorite is Friend You'll Be...very different from the previous song, but IMO a very beautiful song. This entire cd is a good mix of the mellow and the intense. The two songs I mentioned are my favorites out of the entire cd collection, so I guess that is another reason I am drawn to REARMAMENT. A couple of others that stand out are Perfect Irony, Be Careful What You Say and I Am Legend. Meredith, I'll be glad to get the Jr. Mints and give them to Happy on your behalf:) I'll let you know for sure if I'm going, but for now it's a GO! Thanks Bob, for the tips on taping:) I've really got to get a better antenna this week-end, so WDET comes in a little clearer AND in stereo! I don't tape much off of the radio since I work such long hours :( Maybe this will give me more incentive! Lynn ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 24 Fri Apr 23, 1993 R.POCILUK [Rob-n-Pam] at 23:03 EDT I couldn't agree more about "'Til the Dawn Breaks," Lynn. I was playing Rearmament last weekend. When I got to that song, I stopped the CD and reprogrammed to repeat the track. By the second listen I was in tears! Not sure exactly why, but I just had a very gut-level emotional reaction. Very powerful stuff. I'm in much the same situation as you are, having gotten all six CDs at the same time about 6 weeks ago, but at this point I would have to call Rearmament my favorite as well. :) --Pamela ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 25 Sat Apr 24, 1993 R.LOVEJOY1 [Bob] at 07:45 EDT Hi Todd! Glad to have another fanatical fan aboard! I was hit pretty hard myself! Happy is an amazing talent, and her career is just beginning after six albums! Here is a discography of sorts: RHODES Vol. I \ These first two albums can be considered a double RHODES Vol. II / album. They were not intended for release! REARMAMENT - A little more production, no less talent! ECTO - The favorite of many; I love them all! WARPAINT - Stunning, deep, and beautiful. My first hearing.. EQUIPOISE - Brilliantly produced and performed! All six albums are on the Aural Gratification label. Which one(s) do you already have? Are they playing her music on KFMG? If so, she may drop in during the summer on her Radio Tour. These "tours" usually contain a Meet & Greet at a local CD store. If you are really fanatical, she'll be in Detroit this Friday the 30th, on the air on WDET from 10 to noon, and at a record store in Birmingham from 7-9pm. See my earlier post for details. Heck, what's 607 miles to a true fan? :) Seriously, I hope she does include Des Moines on her radio tour. If she does, I'll be able to find out and post it here, so watch this space! Feel free to E-mail me if you have any questions, or post them here for everyone. It's great to have you aboard! Tell us your favorite songs thus far, where you first heard her, that sort of thing... It's always nice to see talent like Happy find new fans! Take care! Bob L. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 26 Sat Apr 24, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF [Lynn] at 10:07 EDT Pam, looks like our ears are on the same wavelength! :) I don't think I've ever heard anything like 'Til The Dawn Breaks!! I'm trying to play Ecto more, so I can become more familiar with it. Each disc has its own "little personality":) and I'm having a great time getting to know them! Lynn ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 27 Sat Apr 24, 1993 R.LOVEJOY1 [Bob] at 11:36 EDT For my 2 cents' worth, I too love "Til the Dawn Breaks"! It's one of the most powerful, moving songs I've ever heard. When I play it for other people, they can't beleive it's the same person singing all parts. A real tour de force! One of my other all-time favorites is "Feed The Fire" on WARPAINT. Always gives me goosebumps. For that matter, the song "Warpaint" is also very moving. Actually, I like most all of her music! Bob L. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 28 Sat Apr 24, 1993 R.POCILUK [Rob-n-Pam] at 13:30 EDT Yes, "Warpaint" is another amazing song. I think that one, "Til the Dawn Breaks" and "If Love Is a Game, I Win" are my top three. Today. :) --Pamela ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 29 Mon Apr 26, 1993 R.LOVEJOY1 [Bob] at 20:20 EDT And then there's "I Say", "Come Here", and "Ode", stellar songs all! I find so much of her music works on multiple levels; it's all great! There are so many songs I like by her... On the radio tour, she sings a cover version of Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes". Guess what's going through my mind today??? Maybe it's just the voice; Happy Rhodes could sing the phone book and it would be great. No, these are great songs. What a talent! Your typical raving Rhodes fan, Bob L. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 30 Mon Apr 26, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF [Lynn] at 20:49 EDT Bob, I just loved Happy's cover of Ashes to Ashes! D. Bowie is one of my faves and that song is a classic:) I'm still working on getting someone in Detroit to tape the radio show for me. There is a radio station here in Toledo that is SO close to WDET that taping without being right here with it could end up a disappointment :( I think I may have found a kind soul who is willing to tape it as long as she is off that morning. I'm still planning on being in Detroit Fri. night. Birmingham, MI is one of the nicer suburbs in North Detroit. It's about an hour and a half drive from my house, but I'm sure it will be worth it :) I'm still planning to send you the blank tapes we talked about a couple of weeks ago, if it's still OK. I've been just swamped at work for the past couple of weeks! Lynn ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 31 Tue Apr 27, 1993 R.LOVEJOY1 [Bob] at 20:02 EDT Attention Michigan fans! If you're free this Saturday, please E-mail me! If you might be able to give Happy, Kevin, and their manager a ride from Detroit to Ann Arbor saturday afternoon it would be much appreciated! Thanks, Bob. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 32 Tue Apr 27, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF [Lynn] at 20:53 EDT Bob, I just e-mailed you with an affirmative response:) I also was just thinking and there is a possibility that I can take one of the fleet cars home Fri. night (I work for GM) if a minivan is necessary. I'll check to see what is on the lot of test vehicles in the morning. Let me know. Lynn ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 33 Wed Apr 28, 1993 M.TARR1 [Meredith] at 20:58 EDT Ooo, whomever gets to give them a ride, I will hate you forever!!! :> It'll be a great trip. Happy's just great, Kevin is one of the nicest people I've met, and Susanne is Way Cool, too. "Til The Dawn Breaks" is a good showcase for her voice, though imho it goes on about a minute too long, a minor quibble. (You should hear the uncut cassette version of "The Chase" from Rhodes II- it's over 8 minutes long. She really lost it on that one...) I love what she does to her live version of "Feed The Fire" on the radio appearances. (No spoilers, just listen carefully, okay?) I think my fave Happy album is definitely Rhodes I. It's got "Possessed" on it (which, ironically, is the only song of hers whose lyrics weren't written by herself!), which by far outweighs the fact that "He's Alive" is there as well. Happy has recorded quite a few songs, some of which never should have seen magnetic media, and unfortunately "He's Alive" is one of them. So was "Box H.A.P." But two out of (how many?) is an amazing ratio, especially when put up against Top-40 albums, where the ratio is almost exactly reversed. In an interview published in a local Albany magazine recently, Happy explained that the move to Woodstock was precipitated by the need to be closer to New York and "the industry", yet still remain close to Cathedral Sound studios and her band, which unfortunately no longer includes Ray Jung, but things sometimes happen. Enjoy the radio appearances, all. Providing the DJ lets her talk, that is- in the two from Philly that really didn't happen. I'm proud to say that I did almost no talking in my interview with her, so there. :) ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 34 Wed Apr 28, 1993 UN-JERRY at 21:35 EST I'll also be heading from Detroit to A2 this Saturday afternoon, with a couple of friends, but it's to see Blues Traveler! Heh. Talk about close but no cigar... ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 35 Thu Apr 29, 1993 R.WOICCAK [woj] at 00:54 EDT maybe no talking, meredith, but lots of giggling. ;) ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 36 Thu Apr 29, 1993 BRENT.WILCOX at 02:15 EDT Hey, Meredith! Bug those folks to send me something! The stores don't even seem to have anything! ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 37 Sat May 01, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF [Lynn] at 20:22 EDT Hi Everyone! I just returned from the Detroit/Ann Arbor trip and wanted to fill everyone in on the details:) What a day, actaully 2 days! Last night I went to the "in store meeting and greeting" in Birmingham, MI. where I met Happy, Kevin and Susanne (her manager). They are such a friendly group of people:), that instantly I felt very comfortable with them. Happy autographed all of my cd's and I asked her how she decided to cover Bowie's, ASHES TO ASHES. It turns out she is a big Bowie fan and was planning on doing one of the tracks from Ziggy Stardust (I can't think of which one right now) but anyway, she and Kevin started to play it and she started palying laying a few chords from Ashes... instead and pretty soon, they decided this was it and went over to get the cd booklet, so Happy could see the lyrics. So, it just sort of evolved into Ashes. This morning I drove over to their hotel and we were on our way to Ann Arbor. They are all so much fun... it's like they're old friends. I didn't want to bombard her with questions, so we all just talked about alot of different things (recycling (they're was a group picking up trash on the freeways today), Detroit and the automotive industry, music (she asked who some of my favorite artists are so we had a discussion about Eurythmics and Annie Lennox...she also likes Annie), their move to Woodstock and Tori Amos' YKTR). The night before, at the record shop, Kevin and I had a discussion about YKTR and since I had a copy, (and they wanted to hear it), I brought them a copy. It will be interesting to see what they think! We arrived at WAMX; which is a small station in Ann Arbor and unfortunately they didn't have everything she needed to perform anything live:(...they came prepared to perform, but Happy had already said that if they couldn't hook up all of their equipment she'd only do an interview (this is a VERY small station, so she had a feeling it would only be an interview. I think she knew I was dying to see her do the live set, so she said, "I'm really sorry you can't see Ashes live, so I could just lip- synch the songs they are playing,(and she began to do this as they played Feed The Fire)...it was really cute! We made a quick trip to a campus record store that carries her cd's and then we went to lunch at one of my favorite restaurants on campus (Uof M campus). It was there that I gave her 2 boxes of Junior Mints (and told her one was from you, Meredith and one was from you, Bob). She cracked up laughing and asked me if I knew the story behind this. It was a question sent in for Meredith's interview that she didn't end up using on the air, but later aksed her(is this correct, Meredith)... anyway, she answered quickly, JUNIOR MINTS! She also said that this really oops, my mind is working faster than my fingers... the question was, What is your favorite candy? Junior Mints was her answer. She then told me that she answered with that, but it's really not her favorite candy! Reese's Peanutbutter Cups are HER favorite and Junior Mints are KEVIN'S favorite!! She says that he buys them all of the time and eats a few of them. While he's sitting there, holding the remainder, she ends up eating them! She does like Junior Mints, but wanted everyone to know that her real favorite is Reese's Cups...she loves peanut butter and chocolate. While we were waiting for our lunch to arrive, I asked the questions you were interested in, Bob! What are her favorite Sci-Fi authors and what are her favorite movies? She wrote them down for me, so I wouldn't have to commit them to memory:)....so here goes! Fave Sci Fi DUNE, etc. Heinlein, Clarke, Jane Roberts, Dean Kootz This was a hard question for her and she wrote, "No absolute favorite's yet. Give me time." Fave Movies Aliens Bladerunner Paperhouse Cyrano De Bergerac (Gerard Depardien) Better Off Dead (John Cusack) Any Vampire film We drove back to Detroit, (it had been a long 2 days for them, so they were ready to get some rest!) and when we got there they invited me up to their room and Happy autographed an 8x10 picture and gave me a Happy Rhodes T- shirt! Kevin is making me a tape of the WDET radio show, too. All I can say is they are an incredible group! Happy is a very sweet, charming and intelligent person and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet and spend some time with her:) I hope I didn't ramble on too much and I hope this marathon note makes sense!! Feel free to ask any questions because I'm sure I forgot some things. Oh, Happy says HI to everyone on GEnie and Internet! Lynn ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 38 Sat May 01, 1993 T.ADAMSON [Todd] at 21:27 EDT As for SciFi she needs Philip K. Dick and H.P. Lovecraft. Right up her alley. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 39 Sun May 02, 1993 P.COHEN [Paul Cohen] at 01:55 EDT Hi all! I'm one of those Prodigy refugees who've found things very nice and cozy here on GEnie. I'm a Philadelphian who first got into Happy when local station WXPN started playing "Warpaint". Bob Lovejoy: You obviously are from the Philly area since you referred to WXPN as the place you first heard Happy. Where are you located? I'm gonna have to say that "Warpaint" is still my favorite, but I love all of them. The first four still kinda blur together, since I bought them all at once when they first came out. I thought the live performance she did on World Cafe was just amazing. Oh, yes. And my officemate at work refuses to believe that all the vocals on "Equipoise" are done by one person. He says he's gonna go to see her next time she's in town and buy my ticket too. I'm not gonna say no. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 40 Sun May 02, 1993 P.TERRELL at 02:56 EDT Hi all (especially all of you $P$ refugees - I made it over here!) Pam sent me a Happy sampler a while back and Rhodes I & Warpaint for my birthday in March, so I am a relatively new fan of her work but sufficiently captivated by it. :) Love that vocal range - just amazing! If anyone has any info about her possibly playing in the Los Angeles area, PLEASE let me know! I'm curious to see what she's like live. If any of you have seen her in concert before, tell me...how DOES she pull it off?? :) I have no DOUBT that she does, mind you, just curious! Lynn: I think it goes without saying that we all HATE you for getting such a wonderful opportunity to hang out with Happy & Co. like that! ;) If she ever comes out MY way, believe me, I'll be the 1st to offer her a ride! :) You lucky dawg! By the way, some of my Happy faves are Rainkeeper, Step Inside, Wretches Gone Awry (can you tell I really dig the 1st CD?), Warpaint and Poetic Justice! :) Jennifer ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 41 Sun May 02, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF [Lynn] at 10:56 EDT Jenn, Everyone continues to ask her if she plans on touring! She's thinking about it ( a short tour). They would have a band- Happy, Kevin, the girl who has done some back-up stuff on her cd's (Happy says they blend together VERY well...she (I wish I could think of her name!) is one of these people that can sound like "anyone you want her to", according to Happy. She also says she doesn't make her do this, she chooses to do it and it really works great! ) and I think one more band member. Anyway, they are thinking about it, but no definite plans, yet. Bob, Where are you:)??? Lynn ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 42 Sun May 02, 1993 K.FICARA [Ken] at 11:56 EDT Okay, I >>>MUST<<< get something by this woman. Which album is the Ashes to Ashes cover on (that being my second-favorite song from my favorite Bowie album)? I have to get it. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 43 Sun May 02, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF [Lynn] at 13:44 EDT Ken, Sorry to have to break the news to you on this one, but Ashes isn't on any of her cd's:( It's a song she's been doing on the radio appearances lately. This is also one of my favorite Bowie tunes and I hope she decides to release it someday! Lynn ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 44 Sun May 02, 1993 R.LOVEJOY1 [Bob] at 13:56 EDT Lynn, WOW! I'm beyond four shades of green! And to think it was I who got you into this! So glad you had a great time! Paul, I live in Cherry Hill, NJ, and work in Center City. Where are you? P. Terrell(Jennifer?), I've had the great fortune to see her live twice! She pulls it off! I have to say that her concert at the University Museum Theatre was the very best concert I've ever attended, and I'm a 46 year old ex-pro musician! She is incredibly talented! Lynn, her backup singer is Kelly Bird! She is one of the nicest people extant, as well as a great vocalist. Happy's band also has a keyboardist named Martha Waterman who is also very talented. They just "divorced" their bassist, unfortunately. Wonder if I should ready an audition tape? Again, thanks for the report and information! I'm glad I was able to set you folks up; I'll be talking to Susanne White early this week and will get her story too. See you on Ecto! Bob P.S. -Ken, "Ashes to Ashes" is not on any of her albums. She's just performing it on her "Radio Tour". It's hard to recommend just one album, but my first was "Warpaint" and it worked for me. I would strongly advise not getting a lot of them all at once, as each is very deep and requires a lot of listening. One at a time should do it, with the possible exception of the first two, which are sort of a double album! ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 45 Sun May 02, 1993 R.POCILUK [Rob-n-Pam] at 20:19 EDT My new America Online ID is Rainkeeper. Just thought I'd mention that. :) --Pamela ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 46 Mon May 03, 1993 P.COHEN [Paul Cohen] at 00:43 EDT Bob: I'm in Philly, East Falls area. You really seem to have gotten involved. How did this all happen just from hearing her on WXPN? ------------ (Back to Bob) And that's where Genie's HappyTopic(tm) stands now. Hey, do you folks mind being innundated with this? I thought I'd pass it on to you every two weeks or so. To some of you it might be redundant (check with the Department of Redundancy Department), or perhaps overkill. Anyway, I guess I'll have to get into ectosynchronicity with Paul! My story is kinda fun to type, anyway! I guess that's enough bandwidth for now! See you all again soon! Bob Lovejoy ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr. There is an INDEX file explaining what is where.
