I don't want to give too much away, as I think it is something you have to see for yourself, but I do want to briefly talk about the music. IT's very eclectic, and segues from Thomas Tallis to Tom Waits and Tibetan without a blink. One of the most effective pieces in the film, for me anyway, was an instrumental version of Loreena McKennitt's "The Lady of Shallott" which highlights the fact that this is simply a gorgeous song... I just found out that _Equipoise_ is reviewed in the current issue of Billboard, dated May 1. Apparantly it's short, but positive. I don't have it, but I'll look for it tomorrow. We just got back from Ingrid Karklins. It was *GREAT*!! She played keyboards, a Latvian autoharp-type instrument, pennywhistle and electric violin. She was backed by a bass player and a drummer. Most of the songs were new, but she also played a good selection from _A Darker Passion_. The audience was fantastic and she was quite suprised and pleased by the quietness and the enthusiastic reception (she said that she should hire us :-)) We met her before and again after the concert and she's *SO* nice! A few days ago I had wondered what she would do in Chicago for 4 days, but I had forgotten all about the fact that she's from Chicago. She grew up here and her family still lives here. I asked her where she would be playing next and she said they were heading back to Austin. Penelope Houston will be in Chicago again on Wednesday night. She'll be playing the Lounge Ax. It's going to be a late show, so I'm not sure yet if we'll be going. I'd really like to... Did *anyone* on the East Coast go to see her? Film-that-if-you're-thinking-of-going-to-see-but-have-no-idea-if- it's-a-dog-or-not-and-you-want-to-hear-from-at-least-one-person- who's-seen-it-and-liked-it-Dept.: 3 Of Hearts It's small, sweet, funny and wonderfully natural. It's worth seeing just for Kelly Lynch's performance and character. She plays a nurse who's just had her heart broken and hires a male escort to accompany her to her sister's wedding. They become friends and cook up a scheme to get her girlfriend back, but the plan just doesn't work out quite the way either of them expect, thank goodness. Sherilynn Fenn (Audry from Twin Peaks) plays the girlfriend and she's very good! Probably the biggest suprise (other than the way lesbianism and bisexuality is treated in such a natural, no-big-deal way in a mainstream film) is William Baldwin. Alec's little brother is not just cute, he can act too! It's not a perfect film, but Chris and I enjoyed it very much. I hope it does well, not only because it deserves to, but also because it will show Hollywood that l/g/b characters in films don't have to treated differently, stereotypical or with kid gloves. Oliver, Oliver, Leolo and Stolen Children (can't rememeber the Italian title) are all on my list, as is Like Water For Chocolate and Brother's Keeper. Last week I saw another good Australian film, The Last Days of Chez Nous. It's directed by Gillian Armstrong, who directed one of my favorite films, My Brilliant Career. It doesn't come near MBC, but it's better than Mrs. Soffel. Warning though, if you don't want to see Bruno Ganz (who played *THE* Angel in Wings of Desire) playing a character who's pretty much a jerk, stay away. I still haven't gotten over it. (btw, can anyone tell me what "Chez Nous" means? It's never made clear in the film. Thanks in advance.) (I missed a chance to hear it myself, because World Cafe is aired here at 11am, and I was attending an important conference and could not take the time off. :( :( ) So, Bob Lovejoy or whoever, please send me the tape. While on the subject, if Happy's tour stops at a radio near you, please record it and send the tape to me, so that Ectophiles world-wide can hear it. (I will return your original tape, if you request so). Any contributors can choose any two tapes from the tape dubbing project absolutely free! Let's catch all of Happy's stops! As for the C-90 vs C-100 issue, the default tape for the tape dubbing project will remain C-100's, since some tapes cannot be squeezed into ninety minutes. However, should you be fearful of C-100's, when you order, specifically ask me to use C-90's for short enough tapes. However, since I won't buy those in bulk, the cost will be higher. As for the C-100 tapes themselves, I'll just note that the tape dubbing project recently crossed the 300 mark for the standard C-100 tapes, and I've had zero trouble with any of them. As for the proposed sf music tape, I've always been wide open to adding any tapes of general interest to Ectophiles to the tape dubbing project. Feel free to put together such a tape and send it to me. (Of course, I'm still waiting for the proposed Canadian and Celtic tapes. :) ) By the way, I should note that an "SF references in music" list exists on the net, and I can easily e-mail it to anyone who would like a copy. (It's too big and too limited in interest to post here). Finally, I am still taking votes for an updated Happy sampler tape. If you haven't done so, please send me a list up to 25 of your favorite-est Happy Rhodes songs. If you have done so, thank you very much! :) Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! ======================================================================== From: "Michael Blackmore" Date: 3 May 93 10:58:58 EST Subject: Re: Nina Hagen Vishal, If you liked Nunsexmonkrock, then check out Fearless (Angstlos), Nina Hagen In Ektasy, Nina Hagen Band, & Unbehagen. There's still no reason to make a difference between the "real seeming" and the "seeming". One day, someone could come up with a new and improved measuring instrument which would make the lines seem bent again. How do you know something *really* seems to be? >I don't know too much about the history of science, but I would guess >that the black box view of the universe was first accepted in the >beginning of this century. Until then, the prevalent view was (I >believe) that we could learn exactly what the universe is; now we're >satisfied if we can just construct models that fit on the observable >interfaces... I'm not really comfortable with this black box view, because it keeps open a possibility for things to exist in reality which have no consequences in reality. One could even say that such things don't really *exist* after all, at least not in *this* reality. They are completely irrelevant to this reality. I believe that something which is said to exist should have some consequences in reality. So in principle, everything is observable. >All of this of course ties in with the issue of the nature of the >"ether" which was much discussed back then (until Einstein's special >theory of relativity came out), and perhaps also the discoveries in >(what became) quantum physics, that the system and the observer isn't >independent. Sometimes it isn't even clear what should be called the observer and what should be called the system. Of course, the theory should give the same results in both cases. This also ties in with what I said above about the importance of the observer. >Of course, the black box model still isn't universally accepted: The >discussions on the possibility of machine intelligence is a good >example of this... Uhm... This sounds interesting, but what is the connection between the black box model and the possibility of machine intelligence? I think that *we* are a sufficient proof of the possibility of machine intelligence, if you use a liberal definition of machine, and you are willing to call us intelligent. :-) Albert "who else would terrorize you....................." - Happy Rhodes P.S.
