I saw Tori Amos in Mpls on Sunday and needless to say she was wild. The way she straddles that piano bench, it looked like she was making love to the audience. I just don't know how she can play the piano in that awkward-looking position. I thought she was a little histrionic, and even a little scary, but I guess alot of it is the act. I don't know how she maintains that level of intensity for so long. wow. I was trying to think of what Kate would be like playing the piano... not quite as wild, no doubt. The place where we saw the concert (Fine Line Cafe) was a yuppie trap. We paid $5 for tix, but when we got there 3 (coun'em, three) hours early, we found most of the tables in the small place (seats 200, 450 tix sold) to be *reserved* for people who had paid $20 each for some dinner thing. So we got the closest unreserved table and staked it out. Slowly the place filled. The opening act was more like the opening dork. Talk lack of local talent! This guy could barely play the guitar, his voice was torturous, he was apparently stoned or shitfaced or probably both, and the songs were wretched (not to mention he sang completely out of key). I'm surprised the yuppies didn't throw money at the guy to sit down and eat his guitar. An altogether yucky experience (and to boot, it was hard to ignore someone this hideous). Contrary to what some people here have mentioned, the story Tori told before Me and a Gun recalled some earlier experience she had had personally (not some Irish thing that people keep talking about). She said it was very difficult to draw the strength to sing it, but it was soething that had to be done. In all, this was probably the most *draining* concert I have ever attended. I mean we were spent afterwards (wonder how tori feels -- she must be in great shape). Well worth the wait. Thankfully, Tori did not thank the opening dork. [much better courtney... hope the mono passes quickly so you can mew in this great weather outdoors] Till then, -mjm (michael mendelson) ======================================================================== From: guetzlaf@gravity.cray.com (Cathy Guetzlaff) Subject: Re: Tori in Mpls and Vickie's # Date: Fri, 8 May 92 12:40:04 CDT Mike talks about the Tori Amos concert experience in Mpls: >The opening act was more like the opening dork. Bob Dylan opened for Tori???? Was the concert sold out? Sarah McLachlan was here a couple of weeks ago and the Fine Line sold out for her. I spent my entertainment dollars this month on Aretha's first visit to Mpls in two decades (hoping she'd sing her old stuff and can the 'Freeway of Love' junk) so I didn't get to see either Tori or Sarah. By the way, next time you come to town for a Fine Line concert, pay the money and have the 'dinner thing' -- the food isn't all that bad! Although the song was written about a personal Tori experience, she dedicated the song to the Irish girl who was in the news recently. The girl (who had been raped) was denied a visa to go to England to get an abortion (due to the _harsh_ Irish laws concerning abortion). They said the mailings are ready to go, so as soon as the discs arrive, they'll get stuffed and mailed the same day :-). They also said they've received about 40 orders so far. How many of those do you suppose are ECTOPHILE orders? Since they don't do the VISA thing, I had to actually mail a check. Eventually >due to the overwhelming global outcry, she was finally allowed to go. the song was directly inspired by Tori seeing "Thelma and Louise" -- the movie reminded Tori of an incident from her days playing in bars, where she was attacted by a co-worker in the bar's parking lot. The account i read said she managed to "get away" from her attacker; in repeating that, i do not intend to suggest that the experience was in anyway less traumatic. by coincidence, i saw "Thelma and Louise" (for the third time) the night before i saw Tori perform at the Iron Horse; in my opinion Tori's song is as powerful and effective as the (superb but much longer ;) film... >Since they don't do the VISA thing, I had to actually mail a check. It seems like Alice has arisen from wonderland! I *love* Alice: he's alive. You should feel him in the dark... Thanks for the *wonderful* postcard, Jessica! I've finally made my decision for my song for the HBP. It will be _Lullaby_ from Loreena McKennitt's first album _Elemental_. This song really isn't made for cowards. Now I only need to find some courage to choose my words for the message... All the Poetic Justice fans (the first line from that song should be "Get out of my world of words", not "world of worlds", IMHO) should try to get hold of Loreena's third album _Parallel Dreams_. It seems like she also has some serious trouble with parasites in her ears: "Oh my heart be strong/And guide when eyes grow dim/When ears grow deaf with empty words/When I know there's life within" (_Breaking The Silence_).
