It wasn't their best show, but hey, it's still D'Cuckoo, some of the coolest women to ever wield marimba mallets. :) Because there was a Mary Wilson concert upstairs, there was a *LONG* delay between sets... apparently the sound was coming through the floor and disturbing the concert upstairs, so the intermission lasted over an hour. In the meantime, members of the band came out and mingled. I talked to two of them about various things (like what they recommended in effects boxes, etc.), and in the midst of one of my conversations with bandmember Tina Blaine (aka Bean), I mentioned the radio show Music From the Hearts of Space. She said, "Have you met Stephen Hill?" "No..." "Would you like to?" "Sure!" He was standing right next to us! So she introduced us and Stephen and I talked for a while. I mentioned Happy Rhodes to him, and he said, "Oh yeah.. John Diliberto played some of her stuff for me. We're still waiting for a CD from her." (!!) So I'm going to call Kevin tomorrow and let him know about this... if Happy gets on Hearts of Space, it'll expose her to a LOT of listeneners. I couldn't count the number of artists I've gotten interested in because I heard them first on Hearts of Space (Dead Can Dance and Bel Canto among them). "Ode" and "Summer" are PRIME Hearts of Space candidates. Emily can tell you about how she broke a light using the MidiBall. :) D'Cuckoo is planning to tour later this year, but they have no dates set yet. If they do come to your town, DON'T MISS THEM! The concert was *amazing* of course. Tori said she'd had a bad day, but didn't elaborate except to say "You wanna know how bad a day it's been?" and at the encouragement of all, she played random notes from the lower end of the piano scale :-). We were lucky enough to get a front row table, which was off to the side (my back was resting against the stage right speaker) but thanks to the way Tori sits and performs, the view wasn't bad at all. I'm glad we were on *her* side though, instead of the piano side. Chris and I sat with Chip, MJM & Kathleen, and some other people I don't think I'm not sure I've met before. The audience was quietly respectful while she was playing, and wildly, loudly, enthusiastic at all other times. Between songs, choruses of "I LOVE YOU TORI!!" "YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL!!" and titles of songs flew about. She said she wished she could carry us around in her pocket :-). She seemed quite at ease and talkative. One interesting thing we noticed was that they had microphones set up, pointing out at the audience, which makes us think that this concert might have been recorded. Unfortunately, we forgot all about it as the concert progressed and forgot to ask anyone about it after the show. I guess we'll find out at some point. This would have been a great one to record, because it was perfect in every way. It's a shame we didn't get "Bells For Her" and "Cornflake Girl" and I was harboring a secret hope that she'd do "The Wrong Band" but I certainly can't complain. It was wonderful! To top it off, I got to meet StaceyW & KevinH after the show. Didn't get to meet Tori though :-( because they shooed everybody out of the alley where the stage door was, and when she did come out, she got into a car and was immediately driven away. She waved at us though :-). I guess the days of Tori Hugs are a thing of the past and if I were to complain about Tori's getting more successful (which I'm *not* because she deserves it) it's the loss of the personal interaction I'd most complain about. Anyone who gets a Tori Hug from this point on should savor it and cherish it, because they'll get rarer and rarer. I've been lucky enough to get 3 of them so far, and I'm happy. Short to Ectophiles: Her faithful tour manager John came out and told everyone that she wouldn't be signing autographs and meeting people, but that if anyone had anything they wanted to give her, to give it to him and he'd see that she got it. I gave him the _Ecto_ with a short explanation about the others I'd given her...it being a "tradition" and all :-), and that she said she'd appreciated the others. I guess I was afraid that he wouldn't really give it to her, so I wanted to put a personal side on it. I do hope she got it. I'm more sorry about not being able to pass along Happy & Kevin's invite for a cup of coffee if she does play the Bearsville Theater later this year. Last week I was listening to the Sunday Morning Acoustics show on 'HFS and thinking about how perfect a venue it would be for Robert Shannon Meitus and the Dorkestra. Meitus is a Hoosier who put together a rather nifty folk band. Somehow the folks who ran the tiny coffee house at my dorm managed to get them to play at the coffee house the first time they came to Bloomington in support of their album _100 Flowers_. (Unlike Arson Garden, so far as I know, Meitus never lived in my dorm.) They played at a club one night, but played Collins another night. We dug the hell out of 'em, they dug the hell out of us, and they ended up coming to Collins a number of times. I ended up with their CD and I've been rather fond of it. So I was thinking about the album last weekend, and I haven't heard it for a while, so I decided to pop it in this morning. Something inspired me to have a new look at the liner notes, and lo, was not terribly surprised to find that Lisa Germano plays bouzouki, mandolin, and violin, as well as singing BVs on several tracks (including a *great* cover of John Prine's "Paradise"). (No, she never toured with the band) Knowing that Germano has something of a following on Ecto, I figured this was worth pointing out... Also present on the album is a woman named Carrie Newcomer, who *did* appear with the Dorkestra, as I recall. She plays dulcimer and sings. Anybody heard of her, and/or know if she's got any albums available? Jeff (who will note that his CD, now almost 4 years old, is SRD-100 on Scratch Records and that the liner notes list a point of contact for the band at PO Box 30323, Indianapolis, IN 46230-0323...dunno if they're still around) |Jeffrey C. Subject: Get your Happy cards, here! Hi everyone, Wow, it's been a long time since I posted anything here on Ecto. I've been reading daily, but just haven't had time to reply to anything because of work. We're trying to finish up the work from the Hubble servicing mission, and since I'm in charge of the database that holds the position of the apertures, I've been BUSY! :) First, I wanted to let anyone who has access to World Wide Web know that the Space Telescope Science Institute has a very nice page. The address is: http://stsci.edu/top.html There are images from the "fixed" telescope there, as well as LOTS of info about the Institute and the work that goes on here. Now, I am pleased to report that I placed an order last night for 1000 Happy cards. I know I've given a brief description before but I'll do it again for the new members. :) A Happy card is a business card with Happy's name, Aural Gratifications address, and a listing of all of her albums, with catalog numbers. The cards should be great to give to people who you meet and seem interested in Happy's music. Happy gave me her ok to distribute the cards, so she does know about them. They aren't real fancy, just white cards with black print. But I think they will come out nice. There are a few people who have expressed a desire to have some of these cards (If I missed someone, please remind me). They are: Valerie (Happy B-day), Smudge, Stuart Myerburg, and Alex Gibbs. I figure about 20 per person is a good number, and if anyone needs more, I can send more. And if we use all 1000, then I'll just have to print more up, since the Happy army will be SWELLING rapidly. :) So for people who want some cards here's what you have to do (you knew there'd be a catch, right? :)). It's simple really. Just send me a self addressed stamped envelope and I'll put 20 cards in it and send it back to you at no additional charge. :) The cost of the cards is small, so I'm not worrying about it. But sending me an SASE will help me get them back to you quickly and hopefully efficiently. :) My address is: John Sandoval 9015 Thamesmeade Rd #B Laurel, MD 20723 You can send the envelope whenever you wish. I should get the cards next Friday (4/1), so as long as the printer doesn't make an error, I'll start sending them out next Saturday (4/2). That's it for now. Hi to all the new ectophiles, and it's good to have you back Vickie. :) *HUGS* John ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 25 Mar 94 12:07:55 PST From: Neal Copperman Subject: and yet, there was something missing It's now three days post Tori, and I've seen another show since hers. It made me think back on the Tori show, and while I loved it, I felt like there was something missing. It may have just been the size of the auditorium, but I didn't feel any emotional immediacy, or intimacy, or something. Everything sounded great and it was wonderful to see her, but I felt more moved by the cd's. Some of her music I can feel in my guts, and that never once happened at her show (for me). Have other people been similarly unaffected, or was it just me? These thoughts were brought on by my standard thursday night with Jewel Kilcher at the inner change coffee house. Certainly she has the advantage of playing somewhere tiny, but a number of times in the first hour I was so moved. Leaving the show, I was surprised to find that I felt Tori's show was more consistant, but Jewel's was a better concert. That thought really surprised me, but I don't have any second thoughts about it. One interesting thing about seeing Jewel every week is to watch how things progress as she nears potential fame. Last night we learned that when she came down here from Alaska, she lived in a VW van for a number of months. After word got out about her performances, record executives from LA would come down in their limos and visit her in her van, and send her flowers and whisk her off to NY for showcases, and then she would return to her van. Since being signed to Atlantic, she got a bonus and a small monthly salary, so now she can afford an apartment. She also bought a new guitar, though she went to the factory and bought a cheeper one, marked way down due to a crack in the finish. It's also interesting to see how the songs change a little as she comes back from working with producers in LA. A minor lyric change here, the addition of a bridge or slightly different chords there. It's quite fascinating watching the evolution of an artist. Anyway, her album is due out from Atlantic this summer. I hope she tours so more people can see her. I leave tomorrow for a 9 day trip to the Yucatan peninsula, in case anyone wonders about my absence. Ilka - yes you can have a copy of the interview tape. More details when I return.
