(Favorite skating music) (cross-posted on rec.skate and Ecto) Who is she and where might I write her? Any information is appreciated. Thanks to a nice person on rec.skate (who's name I can't remember but I'll be eternally greatful to) I knew about, and watched, the USA "Champions On Ice" special last night. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Somehow, I'd not heard of Gia Godat before, but I'll never forget her after watching this show! I thought her first number was charming...a very nice tribute to Sonja Henie, but it was her second number that had me jumping up and down. She skated to one of my favorite singers, Najma! Najma's not well-known, but her album _Qareeb_ is one of my favorites, and Gia skated to a medley of songs from that album. I'd love to write her and thank her. I *live* for moments like this :-)....I love skating but dislike most of the music skaters skate to. Amateur competition music I can handle, because I understand the rules involved, not to mention the need to please the judges. It's only in Exibitions and Professional competitions where a glimmer of the skater's real tastes can be found, and most of it is *so* boring (IMHO, ok?) I'm constantly looking for performances that are skated to interesting (to me) music, and occasional gems from some of my favorite artists. It's rare, very rare, for me to come across those gems. Please don't misunderstand. I have *nothing* against skaters who skate (by choice) to Barbara Strisand and Neil Diamond etc., and I love classical music. I don't mean to sound elitist, it's just that my tastes in music runs in a different direction. I don't *judge* (like or dislike) skaters by their music, it's just that it's a joy to come across those special (to me) musical moments. Here are some of my favorites. I haven't identified everything yet, I just know I like it. Not included in this list are favorite Classical moments, such as T&D's "Bolero" or Blumberg & Siebert's "Scheherezade" ----------- Ice Dancing ----------- Bestemianova & Bukin(D) (SU) - 1993 World Profs ("Bugs Bunny Medley" from The Carl Stalling Project) Blumberg & Siebert(D) (USA) - 1986 World Profs (artistic) ("Madame Butterfly" by Malcolm McLaren) Blumberg & Siebert(D) (USA) - 1987 World Profs (artistic) (Talking Heads) Judy Blumberg & James York(D) (USA) - 1993 Champions On Ice ("Primitive" by Annie Lennox) Isabelle & Paul Duchesnay(D) (France) - 1988 Worlds (Savage Rite-unknown) Isabelle & Paul Duchesnay(D) (France) - 1990 Worlds Exibition (unknown...music from the Andes?) Gee, I always thought it was because she wrote a song about being a ghost who lingers on and affects the people around her after death instead of moving on or just ceasing to exist ("My soul will not evaporate."). "Ectoplasm" is the glow that supposed to emanate from a medium during a communication with the dead; the word has also often been applied to ghosts. "Ecto" seems a perfectly reasonable abbrevation of "ectoplasm." I've never read anything deeper into the song "Ecto" than it's surface story about the ghost. If there's a subtext about a person fitting into society, it's eluded me completely. As for the album title, well, who knows how Happy decided to make "Ecto" the title track. It's entirely possible that she had the ghostly photo of her painting and figured it was easier to use that than to have to deal with coming up with another cover. ;-) Jeff ======================================================================== From: dfleenor@nettech.com (super dave?) It's actually old news, since the shirts have been available since Happy's Philadelphia concert in March 1992. I just kept forgetting to add it to the FAQ. Based on previous talk from people who bought shirts, I take it that they run to the small side...even the XLs run small. Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 17 Mar 94 15:37:29 PST From: Neal Copperman Subject: no more than Phair Well, I saw the Liz Phair show last night. I headed down to the new Casbah location, one block from the old, and entered the club right behind Cindy Lee Berryhill. Knowing that Somebody's Dog, er Daughter, was opening, I intentionally got there late, though not late enough, since they had a few songs to go. I gave 'em another minute or two of my time, before retreating to the back room, a feature in the new Casbah I thought silly on previous occasions, but welcomed tonight. Pool tables and stereo music were much preferable. Headed back to hang out for Liz Phair. (or Lyz Phar as my handwritten ticket said). I had never heard any of her stuff, but was expecting brash and personal vignettes, clever wordplay, and a sort of in-your-face attitude. I don't know what's on the album, but I didn't get that at the show. I was quite disappointed, as the show pretty much had none of the qualities I like in a concert. Oh, I think one song had a melody (something about when we do the Double Dutch?). Lots of songs had some rhythms, but in general, the music seemed uninspired, lacking punch, energy, emotion. It just sort of banged along. Lyrics were largely lost in the mix. Liz seemed moderately nice, but not too personable. She didn't talk much and she wasn't a dynamic performer. She wasn't aggresive or rowdy, and a song with a title like "Fuck and Run" turned out to be lacking the kind of energy I expected it to have. She did do a very blue ditty with just guitar accompaniment that had one of the cleanest sounds and bluest lyrics. (Parental Advisory for the next sentence or two.) She called it an old camp song. Perhaps some of the ladies recall the one about your overwhelming desire to give blow jobs by the hours and fuck someone til there dick was blue. That song actually was one of the most captivating of the evening. After about an hour, she left the stage. As people yelled for more (were they excited or just well trained? I was patient but unenthused) she left the stage, left the club by the door right next to the stage, got into a waiting car and drove off. The end. In empathy to someone, I then found my car was broken into while I was in the show. It took three different attempts before gaining entry. First jam a screwdriver into the lock and wrench on the door handle until neither function properly. Then, peel the molding back and try to bend the window forward. Finally, just break the damn thing. Amazingly enough, once inside they discovered that that gaping hole in the dash really did not contain a stereo. Well, may as well rip that metal frame out and leave it dangling anyway. Then, break the locked latch that pops the trunk, where the stereo really was hiding, and make off with that and the cd changer. Whata bummer. Plus, my changer contained my new copy of Warpaint! As well as Laurie Anderson's Home of the Brave, The Replacement's Let it Be, one of Pink Floyd's Wall discs (excuse me, do you sell disc 2 of the Wall?), and Stravinski's Rites of Spring. :( Tonights music scene looks much better. My latest favorite performer, Jewel Kilcher, puts more emotion into the word Angel than was in the entire Liz Phair show. And if I feel awake enough, and daring enough to return to the scene of the crime, the DOwns Family, our local version of the Pogues, should be doing St. Patrick's Day right. ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 17 Mar 94 18:52:45 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Re: Beware!
