I concur wholeheartedly about what a great band this was. However, I'd recommend either of their studio albums "U.K." and "Danger Money" over the live album. The line-up for "Danger Money" is the same as the live album, but the first album replaces Bozzio with Bill Bruford and also adds guitarist Allan Holdsworth. As far as what they're doing, Wetton of course was in Asia (though I don't think he was ever in Yes) and is probably most famous for his work with mid-70s King Crimson. He also put out a solo album in between U.K. and Asia as well as collaborated with Phil Manzanera. Terry Bozzio went on to Missing Persons with his wife (I think) Dale. I believe he also may have worked with Zappa. Jobson released a solo album in 82/83 called "The Green Album" which I adore, even though his singing is a bit flat. He also contributed 2 tracks to Private Music's album "Piano One" which also features Ryuichi Sakamoto (among others). He then released an electronic album in 1986 called "Theme of Secrets" again on Private Music. He then reportedly went on to write high-tech advertising jingles and supposedly now does the music for the NBC series "Viper." Oh, by the way, he was part of Jethro Tull for the "A" album and tour. I hope someone found this interesting. "Danger Money" is one of my all time favorite albums. I hope someone out there can derive a fraction of the joy from it that I have.:) ___________________________________________________________________________ Jeff Pearce pearceja@wl.wpafb.af.mil And though I'd like to laugh At all the things that led me on Somehow the stigma still remains David Sylvian - "Waterfront" ___________________________________________________________________________ ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 8 Mar 1994 13:07:41 -0800 (PST) From: David Dixon Subject: Re: Bel Canto, UK, other reviews On 8 Mar 1994, Mike Mendelson wrote: > Song writing very strong. He's around, doing soundtracks and such (I think his last project was for the TV show "Viper"). I nearly put an Eddie Jobson song as part of my contribution to the HGP last time around (title track from _Theme of Secrets_, which is out of print, I think). Terry Bozio is, of course, most famous for his being in Frank Zappa's band in the late 70's (along with Patrick O'Hearn & Adrian Belew), and being a founding member of Missing Persons (also with O'Hearn). Hello, A call from Susanne White, Happy's Manager Extraordinaire, reveals Big News to the ever-increasing legion of HappyFans(sm)! Announcing "Rhodeways", the official Happy Rhodes Fanzine! From the hills of Provo, Utah, comes the first print fanzine dedicated to the music of Happy Rhodes. Rhodeways is available from: Sharon Nichols P.O.Box 1951 Provo, UT 84603 The cost is $15.00 a year. Sharon is a manager/buyer for the local Sam Goody's, and has Susanne's enthusiastic support! She asks each of us to help get this fledgeling effort off the ground. In addition to subscriptions, any stories, anecdotes, reviews, etc. are welcome. Please feel free to write to Sharon. While Sharon does not yet have net.access, Susanne notes that Rhodeways will mention Ecto. Speaking of net.access, Susanne may be getting it shortly, and she was wondering if any of you know of a public site near Woodstock... In conversation, the topic of Melissa Farrick came up. Susanne has met Melissa and feels she's a wonderful person. Should she join ecto, she should fit right in! As for Happy, Susanne notes that she will not join ecto, but might post info infrequently. Kevin might peek in now and then. Well, that's the Big News, folks! Let's all give Sharon our support, and make Rhodeways a successful fanzine. Now Happyvangelizing can spread to the unconnected! You know, it's *so* easy to drown in e-mail. Frighteningly so. I think I'm going to end up responding to things backwards, since that's how they ended up in my mailbox, so here goes: Jeffy responded to Alan's question: >>Does anyone understand why Tori wants to kill a waitress? I read the lyrics >>and they make absolutely no sense to me. > >My own personal take on the song is that there *is* no good reason why the >main character wants to kill the other waitress...just lots of little >annoying reasons that add up. Surely there are people out there you just >*don't want to be anywhere near* for no particularly good reason? I think that's exactly what it's about. At least, that's the impression I've gotten, both from the song itself and what Tori's said about it. >But I think the real _purpose_ of the song is to show how we can get really >pissed off and full of rage over these little things that we shouldn't let >affect us. Normally nice, gentle people get pushed over the edge after a >while, even though they don't *want* this to happen. Tori has said that her reaction to what this person (not a real waitress, but someone she knows) did to her really scared her, and she *really* did want to kill her, but realized that the consequences wouldn't be worth it and decided that she believes in peace, bitch and let it go. And went home and wrote the song. :) woj replied to Sam: >>I saw Cocteau Twins last night at the Roxy in Atlanta. The opening act was >>some unknown shoe-gazing band called Moose, and they were terrible! > >ooof. moose is one of the reasons that i'm considering going to see the >twins this time around. Oh. Well, I really rather despise all that shoegazing crap, so maybe I'm not as excited about maybe seeing the Cocteau Twins as I thought I was... woj, if you can't get us tickets, I won't be heartbroken, okay? (Incidentally, the term "shoegazer" comes from the tendency of the members of bands such as My Bloody Valentine and all their clones to stare at the floor while making insanely loud distorted ugly noise with their insanely effect-ed guitars.) >something must be wrong with me cos i don't think of _bound by the >beauty_ as a "country" album or even country-inspired. maybe the title >track, but that's only incidental and "country" is probably the wrong >word to be using anwyays. I can't understand this either. The only song that could maybe sound even vaguely "countryish" is "Bound By The Beauty", and I didn't think of that until I heard someone else say they thought it was a country song. >speaking of jane, a whole bunch of us caught the not-a-concert-concert >last night at the theatre of the living arts in philadelphia. Has anyone gone into detail about this show yet? Well, I will. I know quite a few ectophiles have seen these "sib-gathers", and from what I recall about the other descriptions this show didn't differ too much in structure: she opened with a long multi-chaptered story based on her experiences living across from the mental hospital in Toronto, then showed some videos and played some songs and then did a question-and-answer session at the end, which was quite amusing. The songs she did, with the exception of "The Beginning Of Time", "The Vigil" and "Love Is Everything" were all unreleased material, improvised from night to night. And the videos were quite amazing, especially "Sail Across The Water" (which I'd already seen) and "Temple". Unfortunately, "Temple" isn't on the video that was on sale at the show, but hey. My favorite part of the show came at the very beginning, when Jane walked out on stage and just sat perched on her stool, motionless, for about three minutes. By then the audience was positively squirming waiting for something to happen, and nervous titters were breaking out everywhere across the hall. Then she looked up and said simply: "Discomfort turned to comfort at the sound of the human voice. *My* voice." And then she launched into her story. Wow. :) This was a truly wonderful performance... I'm really really glad I got to see it. Oh, and woj's tape came out really well, as usual... mjm reported: >As far as CDs go, Dar William's CD is even better. >It's called the Honesty Room, and I believe the songwriting >is even stronger than Susan's. I may have mentioned this before, but she graduated from Wesleyan the year I was a frosh, and I remember seeing her around campus though I can't remember ever hearing of her performing or anything. She is your basic folk musician mit guitar and I don't think she's terribly original as far as that goes, but she's still quite good. Speaking of Wesleyan alums making good, be sure to check out the forthcoming movie _P.C.U._, screenplay by Zak Penn and Adam Leff '90 (who wrote the original story for _Last Action Hero_). It's supposed to be a scathing commentary on the whole "PC" thing on American college campuses, and is only a very thinly veiled scathing commentary on the "PC" thing at Wesleyan. I know Valerie and I can't wait to see it! :> Hey all, I'm going to be in Iowa next week for work (specifically, Waterloo) and I'm wondering if there are any ecto lurkers around that area? I know for a fact that there aren't any record stores in that town, so I'm not going to bother asking... :} Hopefully I can log on to Delphi from there. Wow. How totally...odd. Liz Frazer was basically out of control from a vocal point of view. One might describe her as wild, or perhaps on really heavy drugs. It would have been easy for someone to think she couldn't speak any english other than the words "thank you" if she hadn't given us a complete sentence when she thanked Moose for opening. That said, it was a *wonderful* show. Liz sounded mostly great and always interesting--it was wild to hear the extraordinary range of noises she can make! The music was great and the light show was amongst the best I've ever seen. Quite complex and beautifully matched to the music. The set was really cool (big spikey things which caught the lights). And much to our surprise, 3 encores (total of 5 songs). -------- I was very pleased with Moose. I wasn't sure what to expect from the small bit of talk on Ecto, but I thought they were quite good and would consider buying an album of theirs. Very jangly pop... All in all, a spiff evening. I then asked for Sarah and she had the Possession single so I've now heard Possession 3 times on local radio. :) She didn't really know (or remember?) that Happy Rhodes was a person until I told her but it was cool to finally have a DJ recognize the name. ESPN will be broadcasting (a repeat, certainly, but I missed it before) the European Championships next Tuesday (3-15). This was a pre-Olympic competition (taped January 23 in Copenhagen) and my question is... Is this the competition where T&D unveiled their *original* Free Dance? During the Olympics I heard talk that they had worked a year on a Free Dance but that it didn't go over well with the judges or the audience, so they re-worked the Free Dance and that's what they performed at the Olympics. Were T&D at Europeans? I'm confused as to when this original dance was performed, at the Europeans or at the British Nationals. If it *was* at the Europeans, I'll be walking on air. There was so much talk about it during the Olympics, and I'll finally get to see it!! Not that I didn't love what they performed in the Olympics (they should have gotten the Gold...if not Gold, then Silver after Usova & Zhulin) but I'm just looking forward to an entirely *new* routine. I've been following T&D for 10 years (wish I'd been paying attention before then though) and most of the re-worked moves had come from past routines. *Nothing* wrong with that (made it kindofa "Torvill & Dean's Greatest Hits") but I think *that's* what cost them the Gold. They should have (IMHO) stuck to their original routine. Anyway, it'll be nice to see what they originally had intended to perform at the Olympics. The wedding is set for 8/13/94. So far the plans are going pretty good. Got most of the major stuff done. Now for how I did it!: 10/2 was my brother's wedding. We're twins, so I wanted to do something special. I was also the best man. Since I wanted to ask Karen to marry me anyway, I figured that that day would be it. So I called up Bill & Jen and asked them if it was OK. This was about a month ahead of time. That whole time people would ask me if I had my 'best man speech' ready. I told everyone that I was gonna wing it. Needless to say, the time came for the speech and that's when I asked her! Every now and then there's a gem, but....) Ah, something I can answer! :-) A friend of mine used to skate competitively, and when I asked her about this, she said there are a couple of factors. One is that music with vocals is pretty much out, for fear that it'll distract the judges. Another is that the costumes cost so much that there's often not much money left over for taking care of the music. :-) Apparently Torvill & Dean actually hired an orchestra to record their music, rather than piecing it together from different recordings the way most skaters do. Wouldn't some of Happy's music make *amazing* music to skate to? Sigh... -- Emily ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr. There is an INDEX file explaining what is where.
