"shoegazer" was a derogatory term applied by the british music press to the various "noise-pop" bands (usually typified by my bloody valentine, though there are lots of 'em who don't exactly fit mbv's ear-splitting approach to that sound) of britain who, when they played live, stood around on stage, deep in thought/concentration/drug-induced stupor/what- ever, staring downwards at their instruments, usually leaning from side to side as they did so. the name (and the sound) caught on in america and the term has more or less transcended its insulting beginnings to be accepted as a moniker to describe bands of that genre. +woj ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 8 Mar 94 04:15:14 +1100 From: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) Subject: Re: Tori Tix I should be careful about JaneTalk after the last thread I started :-) but what the heck, this is about an album I *like a lot!* :^) Neil writes: > > I have been looking high, low and in between for this Jane Siberry album _The > > Walking_, because I am very intrigued by some folks' discriptions of the song > > I *believe* (I don't know for sure) that this album has been > discontinued in the US for some reason. The copy I picked up locally (at Readings in Carlton, Victoria, though Red Eye Records in Sydney told me when I was up there that they usually stock all Jane's CDs) was a Canadian re-release on the Duke Street label, with full sleeve notes intact. It carries the catalogue number DSMD 31040, and the back cover says "previously released as DSRD 31040". I assume the "M" means Mid-price, though it wasn't mid-price by the time it made it out here! It carries the mastering code DDDD (yup, 4 D's!) for Digital recording, mixing, mastering, and... umm... digital manufacture? :) The US version of "The Walking" is edited, I'm told, by the way. On a slightly related topic, can anyone recommend which version of Sarah's "Touch" to get, the US or Canadian? I think I've asked this before here, actually, so apologies if I have. It's just that I've ordered the US one, assuming that extra track means better, but I recall someone mentioning that the US one was also slightly remixed...? BBtB is a very, very good album. It was drastically different from The Speckless Sky, The Walking & No Boarders Here. I bought BBtB while I was on a cross-country road trip, and was quite taken aback by it (at first) since I had all of her previous stuff. However, by the end of the trip, it had worked it's way into my heart. The title song, ...Trains, Everything Reminds Me of My Dog, the Life is The Red Wagon, Miss Punta Blanca, are as jeffy said: True sibmusic. I was also thrilled to see the continuation of the Map songs. I see BBtB and WIWAB as vastly different from her previous work. The music is less synth-oriented, less spoken word, and the lyrics tend to be less witty and more serious. Still, I luv 'em the same. Hehehe. This question comes up quite frequently. Liz Frasier doesn't doesn't really sing in Engligh, or any other tongue known to man (or woman) kind. She did sing in English on some of her earlier works and a few of the tracks on her most recent two albums are in english as well. You'll probably notice that she twists words arround, and uses words that sound like they might be engligh, or some foreign tongue, but are really just vocalizations. Endless debate has ensued from various interpretations of her works. Some people claim (and I am inclined to agree with them to an extent) that the pleasant melodies belie some very, very dark "lyrics." I have recently in the last year become a fan of Happy Rhodes and would like very much to know about her and her story. I first heard her from a tape of a friends friend who got it from a friend, I believe. She was very hard to find. I found the cassette of "Warpaint" and had to buy it even though I would have rather bought the CD. For her quality deserves to be heard from a CD. I had to do a special order for "Rhode Songs". What a great compilation! Do you know much about her? I have already written to her recording company and got a very nice letter from her personally. She told me about this mailing address to get more information. Does she ever do tours and where? How about in Northern California anywhere? Of course I told him all he ever wanted to know about Happy ;-) In other news, I have been very fortunate in my recent hunts through the clearance bins here. Especially last Friday, when I picked up: Live-Mental Jewelry : Not quite ecto material, but one of the nicest CDs I have bought in a while (excluding Tori and Sarah, which are not nice, but heavenly!). I *love* their line 'I've got to learn to live until no end/ But first I must learn to swim all over again/Because pain lies on the riverside'. Actually most of the songs are good, melodical pop with an edge, produced by Jerry Harrison. Shrew'd (A collection of NZ women's music): I *think* this one was mentioned on ecto before. It is a sampler of various women singers from New Zealand. Some songs are good, others I can live without. I was especially impressed by a quasi-instrumental piece by Gill Civil called 'Procession', which somehow evoked happyrhodesian effects in my mind in its style. This one warrants further study. Letters to Cleo-Aurora Gory Alice: Another brilliant Boston band. They play the sort of songs that wouldn't sound out of place in a cavedogs or Heretix or Lemonheads Cd, only they have a female lead singer with an unspectacular, yet thoroughly pleasant voice. diVinyls: efi once included 'I'm on your side' in a tape she made for me, and of course I knew about 'I touch myself', so for $3.95 I had to grab it. Looking forward to the Melissa Ferrick/Evan Dando appearance tomorrow. Keefer" Subject: Jane Siberry Concert Review */ The Philadelphia Inquirer; March 7, 1994, C6 /* Review: Music Jane Siberry's Concert fine-tunes her image by Sam Wood, for the Inquirer Jane Siberry came to the Theater of Living Arts Friday night to forge an identity. On a surface level, Siberry's voice bears an uncanny resemblance to Joni Mitchell's. She's been branded a Kate Bush wannabe, a second-string Laurie Anderson. In photographs and videos she resembles an odd cross between Ellen Barkin and Ava Gardner. So Siberry had a lot riding on the "It Ain't a Concert Concert," which she performed Saturday as well, to answer the question: Is there enough of Jane Siberry to emerge from the forest of names she's often compared to? There sure is. Flanked by a grand piano and an oversized video screen that glowed an ominous blue, Siberry opened with 30 minutes of poetry. Elliptical and quirky, her verse set the tome for the next two hours: a quixotic "My World and Welcome to It" affair. Following her recitations, the tone shifted slightly. Alternating songs with screenings of her self-directed videos, Siberry slowly transformed the ambience of the concert hall into something more resembling a relaxed living room salon. In keeping with the low-key tenor of the evening, she did not parade her hits. But no one seemed to miss "Calling All Angels" or "Everything Reminds Me of My Dog." Instead, she offered stripped-down renditions of lesser-known songs that toyed with pop songwriting conventions. Shifting points of view within a single tune, Siberry employed her octave-leaping voice to stunning effect. A short question-and-answer session hammered home the notion that Siberry was more interested in "show and tell" than knock 'em dead showmanship. Although most of the questions focused on the banal ("How are sales of your latest record doing?"), Siberry's answers continually revealed her to be a thoughtful renaissance woman. By evening's end Siberry had defined herself to her audience -- as an old friend who sees the world with a fresh vision of wonder. I certainly didn't find it "overrated." Well, I don't want to offend anyone, because everyone has their own opinion, but I was terribly disappointed with Reality Bites. I am a big Winona Ryder fan, and I also enjoyed _Slacker_ and the Douglas Coupland books. However, I loathed _Reality bites_! It infuriated me and upset me! Now, I must agree with Sam about Jeneane Garafolo being terrific, and the little bits of pop culture quite amusing. In fact, if the movie had been solely about trying to live as a 20- something year old person in the '90's, I think I would have liked it. However, the intrusive and highly annoying love story really upset me. It seems that the message of this film is that if someone tells you they love you, they can treat you however they want. Ethan Hawke's character is cruel, nasty, lazy, obnoxious arrogant and plain old unlikeable. How frustrating that Winona's character, allegedly intelligent and independent, should fall in love with him. Oh, just ignore me, I can go on about movies. This one just really got me angry. Thanks! _____ Klaus Kluge * klaus@inphobos.wupper.de * I'll be here, I'll be (in) Ecto! ======================================================================== Date: 08 Mar 94 12:22:54 EST From: Mike Mendelson Subject: Bel Canto, UK, other reviews I recently picked up some *more* new CDs... I've barely listened to most of them. Cocteau Twins - 4 Cal. Cafe - more of the same from the twins I've decided to pass on their performance this time round since I was a little disappointed last time (due to the venue and due to the lack of live instruments). Unfortunately they play the Riv again in Chicago and I have promised myself not to another show there (thank God Tori and Sarah are not playing there) unless it's Kate Bush (unlikely) or Happy. This should not discourage anyone else from going. If it wasn't the, or if tix were free or something, I suppose I would go. Then again, I might see Pearl Jam for free too. (not!) Bel Canto - White Out Conditions - I love the title, and I haven't given the music quite enough listens yet to even remember the tune of any of the songs. But my favorite BC CD will probably remain Birds of Passage, which you should all seek out if you haven't yet. I think WOC is more etherial whereas BoP is more "accessible." Melissa Ferrick - Massive Blur - Right now this is a blur to me because I've only heard it < 1 time. Where is she from? Vance Gilbert - Edgewise - As always, these acoustic artists that record high-production CDs are often disappointing, at first. Same is true here. Go see Vance live at all costs. The CD isn't as bad as I originally thought, but some of the songs sound awkward, esp. when he tries for the avant-garde jazzy sound, which I can understand but which misses the mark. It is worth the price of the CD for the last song, however, a might lesson in a cappella (solo) singing. Go buy it for this reason and I guarantee satisfaction. And you might like some of the other tracks too. :-) Dar Williams - The Honesty Room - I'll mention her again because this CD gets better and better. It's mostly fairly plain acoustic guitar but the songwriting is rich, and as I said before, the 1st 3 tracks are worth the price of admission. Very thoughtful stuff that makes you pause and think. Besides, aren't Rhodes I and II mostly fairly plane acoustic guitar? Check this out if you can find it. Police - Message in a Box - I copped (no pun intended) this beauty on a steal from BMG music club as a free 4 selections when I re-enrolled. Not bad for $6. The Police for me are the seminal post-punk (whatever that means -- late 70's/early 80's) band, and they are rich with innovation, syncopation, and straight out talent. I'm glad I only had one of their CDs before getting this, so I don't feel cheated. It's hard to find a band this consistently good. UK - Night after Night - Live - This is from 1979 and has been out on CD for a while. Eddie Jobson, John Wetton and Terry Bozio form this amazing trio. Again, I love what these guys do with just 3 sets of hands and 3 voices. This is just plain as good as prog rock gets, period. If you have never heard UK before go buy this CD. The whole thing, start to finish, is unbelievable. Song writing very strong. I know Whetton has gone to things like Asia and Yes (?) and Bozio pops up here and there (Jeff Beck?) but what ever happened to Eddie Jobson? I've had this CD for a while now, but everytime I take it out and listen to it again, I am more impressed that it can be *that* good. wow. I will once again prod Woj -- what do you think of Maestro? If you already posted some comments, I must have missed them. -mjm ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
