Hello, Thought y'all might be interested to see this review of "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" which appeared on Prodigy recently: PRODIGY(R) interactive personal service 03/05/94 10:58 PM McLachlan Delivers Her Masterpiece Tori Amos' Under the Pink looks like it's going to be a much bigger seller than Little Earthquakes, climbing all the way to #12 on Billboard's Top Album chart in its first week. But if you, like I, are an Amos fan who's disappointed by the new CD, I have another new album that I can recommend to you for artful-female-singer satisfaction. It's Sarah McLachlan's new CD, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (Arista). Canadian Import [>] Despite the title, there's no fumbling on the Canadian singer's 3d album. It's even more enchanting than Touch (1989) and Solace (1992). Newcomers to McLachlan will find summed up in her music many of the qualities of other artful (or arty, detractors might say) women in pop music--including Amos, Laura Nyro, and McLachlan's fellow Canucks, Jane Siberry and Loreena McKennitt. Crowning Achievement [>] At this moment, she may--in terms of artistic accomplishment, anyway--be the best of the bunch. And Fumbling Towards Ecstasy is McLachlan's masterpiece. The album has it all, including vocals that are incredibly evocative whether throaty or high-pitched. Superbly atmospheric backing (mostly provided by McLachlan's acoustic guitar, David Kershaw's keyboards, Bill Dillon's guitar and Ashwin Sood's drums) and poetic, probing, haunting lyrics--the chief element most surprisingly missing from Amos' Under the Pink. Well, maybe I'm a getting a little carried away in my enthusiasm. I suppose the album doesn't have everything 1 might desire. In the Mood [>] The only thing Fumbling Towards Ecstasy lacks is variety in tempo or mood from one track to another. Just about everything here is somewhere between slow and medium-slow, and very atmospheric (aka moody). But if you can immerse yourself in the warm bath of that atmosphere, you may not have any complaints. Atmosphere To Spare [>] Over foggy soundscapes of elegant simplicity or thickly layered beauty, McLachlan sings of devoted love (Possession, the subtly intense first single), troubled thoughts (Ice), and of the ecstasy she fumbles so gracefully towards (Elsewhere). Other outstanding tracks are the exotic, redemptive Fear and the 2 most erotic songs--the slow, slippery Hold On and the serpentine, knowing Circle. Don't Miss It [>] Through everything McLachlan's sumptuous voice slides--with a slight country twang--between a caressingly warm tone and a soaring falsetto, and does so with the ease of an Olympian skier, able to take the trickiest turns so gracefully it takes one's breath away. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy is a not-to-be-missed musical experience. Questions or comments? Write to me on the Music Board (publicly only, please). I'm EXPT06B. Any Questions? [>] Sorry about the formatting; I had to go through a lot to port that to ASCII! I for one am loving this album more every time I hear it. Oh Iago, the pity of it! I note valerie is looking for a ride to NYC for Sarah's concert 3/25. And here she is in Philly 3/22. Guess the weekend date makes it more convenient, but we are a bit closer to you! If all else fails, I hear the Metroliner's not bad... My S.O. is now a big fan of Sarah's, and points out a slight resemblance to Karla Bonoff. She is quick to point out that Sarah's musical vision is a bit more complex, but perhaps Karla was an influence. Wish I'd made it to the BBS a while ago! As for me, if there are still tickets remaining a week before the concert, I'll be able to go. I checked yesterday and there were still 250 seats available at the Keswick. My fingers are crossed. The concert was held in the Ogden Theater in Denver, a small converted movie theater with about 400 seats (folding chairs and a few tables). All-in-all, it was a great place for an intimate concert. The Devlins opened the show, a four-man Irish band, probably on their first extended tour of America. (If I understood right, they will open on every stop of McLachlan's tour). They played very well, though my attention occasionally wavered. Their music tended towards vocals submerged in a loud wash of sound with lyrics tending towards straight- forward topics of love and longing. While they share this style with many bands, they've added elements of U2, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, and the Talking Heads. An odd combination, no? As for the headliner, Sarah McLachlan simply blew the audience completely and utterly away. Musically, she and her band were on from the start. Sarah's voice was strong and showed more versality and quality than I expected from her albums, even clearly cutting through a band running at full blast. The band members were quite versatile, as everyone except the backup singer played more than one instrument (counting background vocals). I enjoyed watching the band members, whose demeanors varied from drummer Ashwin Sood and keyboardist David Kershaw thoroughly enjoying the concert to the emotionless backup singer (whose name I've forgotten :( ). Her concert was very well staged with a number of wonderful surprises and touches. The opening number was especially dramatic (which I won't ruin for you by describing here :) ). I didn't keep a list of the songs she played, but I think it included every song from _Fumbling Towards Ectasy_ except for "Elsewhere" plus a good selection of songs from her earlier albums. In general, her vocals followed the album versions closely, but the band played a much wider range of styles from simple acoustic to flat out full-bore rock and roll, sequenced very well. The concert included two encores of two songs each. Of all the songs, she played, only one of them was one I didn't care for. The rest, especially the way she played them, ranged from excellent through fantastic, with a strong emphasis towards the latter. Given the different pictures of Sarah on her album, I didn't quite know what to expect. In fact, it took a moment for me to register that the woman who stepped onto the stage at one point was Sarah. She joins Happy and KaTe on the list of tiny Ecto-goddesses, probably about 5ft 2in tall. Is this a requirement? :) Relatively pale, plainly dressed, she had an odd stage presence. During the rare times she was not at the microphone she would turn and wander away with a reflective but unreadable facial expression, broken only by smiles interacting with the band members or the audience. In fact, she seemed genuinely uncomfortable with the sustained applause which only increased the concert rolled on. (The audience was as enthusiastic as I've ever been a part of). She only talked with us a few times, including two song descriptions and some other patter which I missed amid the audience's going nuts. Amid the preceding details and descriptions, the essential fact of this concert could be overlooked. It was completely AWESOME and FANTASTIC, ranking among my best concerts ever. If you have the slightest chance to see Sarah on this tour, do so! It will be money well, well spent, especially if your tickets are as cheap as they were in Denver ($13). Do not miss this, or you will regret it the rest of your life! :) Though blinded by the light reflected from Sarah's guitar, I remain ... The music, vocals, and even lyrics are quiet, the quiet of a grey rainy day (with no thunderboomers, though :( :) ). That mood is crafted very well and holds consistently. The music and melodies lack any strong hooks or rhythm that could disturb that mood. Karen Peris rarely raises her accented (think Natalie Merchant) quiet small voice. Yet as the saying goes, still waters run deep. The lyrics reveal a deep emotional under- current. While the actual subject matter ranges all over the map, the songs share a central theme -- emotional burdens. Songwriter Karen Peris barely hints at what caused the burdens, but describes the melancholy of a temporary burden, the pains of learning to bear a permanent burden, or even turning a burden into a joy. She even goes beyond the description to explain how such burdens can be borne, through seeing the good which is in everyone, including ourselves. In fact, I would dare to say "seeing that which is God in everyone", since religious faith is weaved inseparably into the lyrics, often explicitly. The quiet surface adds a lot of emotional depth to the whole album, a subtle gentle deft piece of work. The songs "Umbrella", "Beginning the World" (which could be my theme song), and "Flags" are brilliant and touching songs. Rating: ****o Highly recommended for anyone, though as always, your mileage may vary. Having avoided using the word "ethereal" (Oops! :) ), I remain ... After being cut off from the Internet all afternoon Friday, I came back this morning to a whole array of messages--totally in random order of when they were sent. Anyway, in regards to Melissa Ferrick--sorry Ethan for screwing up the names. My memory isn't what it used to be--as Neal said, we told her the right names--I just didn't remember them when I posted. Also, I don't think we have to worry about Melissa joining ecto and discouraging our liberties. From her tour schedule, and the amount of time spent away from home, I seriously doubt she would have time to keep up with a list as prolific as ecto. Maybe we'd see an occassional post to keep us up with what she's up to, but I seriously doubt any performer has the time to keep up with a list regularly (unlike those of us who sit in front of computer terminals all day). Anyway, I went to see What's Eating Gilbert Grape this weekend. A really delightful heart-felt film, though somewhat depressing. Definitely a better romance story between Johnny Depp and Juliette Lewis' characters than the unbelievable and totally uninspired romance between Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke in Reality Bites (a totally overrated film). While not a great film, Gilbert Grape has its moments and seems to me to have totally captured the experience of growing up in small-town Midwest. One of the highlights of the film for me was the previews--when I saw a preview for Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Among the performers of what looks to be an all-star cast (I was expecting it to be a Robert Altman film from the list of credits) is Victoria Williams. This was news to me. I can't wait to see her in it though. After having bought Swing the Statue last week, I'm becoming even more of a fan. (Though I believe the Choral Christmas performance is what really made me a fan--she is just so likeable!) Any news of what character she'll be playing? Also, for all you Alison Moyet fans out there--a new single has been released--Whispering Your Name. Its a very good song, but the highlight of the single is a live version of Led Zeppelin's Rock n' Roll. Also a very interesting song called F.O.S.--but doesn't show off much of Alison's vocals--mainly just her saying "America". Hopefully the album will be released soon.
