I know we pride ourselves on nothing being "off-topic" in Ecto, but I really felt this campaigning was inappropriate here. A simple pointer to the existence of the vote would have been sufficient. In particular I resent the implication that rdt and Ecto are so similar that postings to rdt can be cross-posted here willy nilly. I agree with Meredith in saying that it would be terrible for Ecto to end up like gaffa, I also think it would be a shame for Ecto to become indistinguishable from rdt. -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** We tried to add it all up and got merely sunrise. *** *** Try putting that in a letter to someone in exile. *** ======================================================================== Subject: SCORE!!! It is a wonderful interview, and got me more excited about LA than I have been in years. Why, even the excerpts from the last show I saw, which I thought was ok, but not that great, somehow seemed much more wonderful now. They called her an artist who is constantly reinventing herself, but I kind of take exception to that. I thought she was a visionary for a while, but it seemed to me that she had a phenomenal blast of creative output, and mostly wiped herself clean. She's been plucking and re-hashing ideas from United States Live for years, and while I enjoyed Strange Angels, it seemed to be of the times, rather than ahead of them. Despite that, I'd probably still see her live again. I've enjoyed all the shows I've seen, but do miss when she was making music, rather than just lecturing and showing those boring clips of her clone, over and over and over again. To all those you have been raving about Melissa Ferrick, add me to the list. Neal Copperman and I went to see her last night at this little coffee-house/ CD shop in La Jolla. Tickets were a whopping $2! (Why couldn't all concerts be like this?) The opening act was a local act--Somebody's Daughter. Ughh! It consisted of a guitar player, a violinist, and a lead singer who couldn't carry a tune if her life depended on it. Luckily I got there late when they were almost through. The best part of their set was a cover of Jane Says-- but only because you could finally understand the lyrics. Then Melissa came out and put on a great set, the best parts of the evening were some of the non-album songs--particularly the humorous Girls WIth Guitars--a song about Juliana Hatfield, Liz Phair and her all being on the same label. She also played a couple of new songs-- Coffee on My Coffee Table, Follow the Leader, and one other whose title I don't remember. When I first heard the album I thought it was very good, but not really remarkable. The more I listen to it, the more I like it though, and after last nights show I really, really like it. She's got a great voice and a great personality. After the show Neal and I were able to talk to her, and I got her to sign my CD booklet (which she had seen me looking at before and asked me where I bought it since the CD store we were at didn't have any, nor did the Wherehouse store across the street). We also told her about ecto, and Neal gave her a printout of some information about how to get to ecto, the melissa etheridge list, and the indigo-girls list, as well as the e-mail addresses of some of the people here who have met her. She said that hopefully she'll be on-line in about a month--after she gets back from Europe. And Neal also told her about those of you who rushed out to buy her CD for her to sign, but couldn't find it--except for one of you--Dave Dixon right?, were all eventually successful in finding it. She was glad to hear it and remembered all of you. She also said she asked why Dave got the one copy and you said it was because he drove. Anyway, maybe one of these days we'll get some mail from her. If you have a chance--see her. She's going to be playing at Tower Records here in San Diego at the SPorts Arena store on March 10 with Evan Dando of the Lemonheads. Watch out for her! DVINSON asked about Celine Dion: I, like you, kind of wrote her off as a VH-1 Mariah Carey wannabe. But when I was home for CHristmas, my mother picked up one of her CDs (unfortunately I don't remember which one). We were both really impressed. There was a wide variety of musical styles--not just the power ballads I've heard on the radio. She did one song with a gospel choir that was out of this world. She does have a beautiful voice, and while not exactly ecto material, she's worth checking out. One of the most vocal >opponents to any artist-devoted newsgroups said that he can understand >rec.music.beatles and rec.music.gdead, but there shouldn't be any other >newsgroups just for one artist. Hmm, things must have gone downhill since the last music-newsgroup creation battle over there... I used to get involved in those battles, but finally got to the point where I felt like the quality of most music newsgroups was so low that I stopped getting bent out of shape about how the noise was structured. IMHO what makes a newsgroup or mailing list "good" is the people who contribute to it -- I read certain mailing lists and newsgroups not because I'm that big a fan of the "main topic" of the list/group, but rather because people who have interesting things (IMHO) to say/review live there. So now I just read the groups/lists I find interesting, and try to be patient (and hit "d" or "k" a lot) when the inevitable redundant discus- sions occur in multiple groups/lists. I understand the problems with mailing lists getting too big... But a site like ours passes any email downstream automatically, without any idea of what mailing lists might be involved, whereas I think long and hard before adding a new newsgroup, just because of the precious disk space involved. So moving a high-volume mailing list to a newsgroup trades off a local problem (the list maintainer's machine running out of resources) for a non- local one (erratic distribution due to some sites not adding the new group). It's also sad but (IMHO) true that for some reason the quality of discussion seems lower in newsgroups than on mailing lists. I don't have any simple solutions to any of this, I just think it's wrong to assume that there are never any good reasons to vote against a newsgroup. OK, I promise to shut up about this now. %) - Larry ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 4 Mar 94 10:47:05 PST From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Melissa Ferrick, Celine Dion, etc. Well, Jeff pretty much covered the Melissa Ferrick territory. As we were told, she was very friendly and seemed excited to chat afterwards. She's relocated from Boston to LA now, so those of us on the west coast should be seeing a fair amount of her. I ineptly taped the show, and ended up with about 2.5 songs. :( Can't even figure out what happened. Great news about Melissa relocating to the West Coast (he says greedily... well, c'mon, you Bostonians still have *plenty* or wonderful artists left). Anyone got any word on her other upcoming Tower appearances, say in the Bay Area perhaps (I've heard rumors)? > Very sad to be missing the JUliana Hatfield song, which was > hilarious. While I'm at it, what's the ecto.opinion on Liz Phair? I'm sure I'll pick up her album, as soon as I can get to a non-lame record store that actually has it in stock. I know this is a real long shot, but is anyone from the DC area driving up to NY Friday, March 25th for the Sarah concert? I'm trying to get there in time for the 8pm show. I'll provide the cookies. Brage) Subject: No Tori in Copenhagen/Sort Sol in New York/Mirmama Hi! Some bad news: Apparently Tori Amos won't be giving a concert in Copenhagen on this tour, after all... :-( Sorry, Yngve, your next-best bet may then be Stockholm (4 May, Cirkus) if that's still on... To any NearNewYorkPhiles: The Danish band Sort Sol (Black Sun) should appear in a club in New York (no, I don't know which one at the moment) on the 16th of March. From what I've heard, they are very well worth seeing in concert. Their music is rockish, with some punk influence (they started as a punk band); no female vocals, though. Their last two albums have received a lot of critical acclaim, and also quite a bit of popularity. I'll post if I learn of the precise location of the concert. As to the price war on "Mirmama"s: I can't remember who posted about a cheaper source of "Mirmama" copies (I accidently deleted those digests and haven't fetched a copy from the archives yet), but you're most welcome to undercut my price: Anything to broaden Eddi Reader's audience! :-) And at 50% off, none of you have an excuse for not getting a copy! ;-) Jens P. Also, she almost produced the following record in a similar vein, except the experience in Edinburgh (where she was booed off the stage) "opened her eyes" to the fact that you can't, and shouldn't try, to please everyone, so she scraped the unfinished album and began a new one - WIwaB. My memory fails me at this point - did I post the New Music interview of Jane to gaffa?
