As they are a pitiful excuse of an award, I haven't watched them for years, and don't know what possessed me last night. I flipped on to see digable planets win something, and then quickly hit the mute for most of the evening. I must say I had a fine time listening to lots of U2 and then Mouth Music, and not hearing a word of the Grammy speeches, only occasionally un-muting for a decent live performance. But for me, tha absolute funniest moment of the Grammies was Garth Brooks performance. Maybe if it was accompanied by Garth's music, rather than U2, it wouldn't have struck me so (seems unlikely though). But the man just looked so ridiculous. With his rubbery face and that big cowboy hat, leaning on his guitar player like he was a fence post. The man was just downright silly. No doubt much funnier than Gary Schandling. As for who won. aahh, who cares. Neal ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 2 Mar 94 13:56:15 EST From: jessica Subject: Re: Happy WWW page? Email is enough. I'd like to make a big plug for the creation of rec.music.rem. Why? Well, the R.E.M. mailing list is in a similar situation as Really-Deep-Thoughts, insofar as the site carrying it refuses to continue to do so due to mail overload. The R.E.M. people are currently in the voting process. If WE help THEM, THEY might help US if we (rdt) decide to go (one of) the newsgroup way(s). Why is this help needed? As Anthony Kosky said it's difficult to get the neccessary 2/3 majority / 100 more YES than NO votes for the creation of a newsgroup, especially since there are some morons that are against any artist devoted newsgroup. "Well, rec.music.beatles is about the only thing that deserves existence" is their credo. Delve into the morass of news.groups to find out more under a subject very similar to mine. So even if you don't really care about R.E.M. - please care about the creation of rec.music.rem - you might even remove all those R.E.M. messages on alt.music.alternative... To do so send a note containing the line I vote YES on rec.music.rem to votes@geoworks.com. Unfortunately I cannot set Reply-To for rdt readers, since this is digest-only now, but for Ectophiles & Love-Hounds reading a non-digest form just hitting 'reply' should work. On the stage of Denver's Ogden Theater, Sarah McLachlan and band exploded, sending shards of energy, emotion, great music, and fun over 400 enthusiatic on-lookers. More details will be released as the euphoric victims recover. A MUST SEE CONCERT WARNING means that a concert of exceptional quality is coming soon to a venue near you. Any Sarah McLachlan fan caught outside during such a concert will be terminated with extreme prejudice. Any Ectophile caught outside during such a concert will be suspended from the list for three months. I really love Bound by the Beauty. I liked it fairly well right off the bat, but suddenly, one day I realized I really thought it was wonderful. It's chock full of the Siberry wit and charm and quirkiness, but has a slightly different approach to the music. I thought of it more as folksy than country, but whenever I find a country artist I like, I always say that to save face :) I had all the previous domestic discs except that one when I saw her at the Bayou in DC. I'd seen her on the Speckless Sky too, so you can imagine my surprise when she came out with just an acoustic guitar and a piano player and a drummer. And then she opened with Tom Waits' "Train Song" which was phenomenal! If anyone has a tape of that tour, they should definitely send it to dbx. Anyone know who that string trio was that played on the grammies, and what it was that they played? They were really amazing. Oh, and I think the sugarcubes list is defunct. And I listened to four random Kirsten Hirsch songs while I got ready this morning, as my introduction to the album, and found Your Ghost and Hips & Makers to be immediately catchy. I'd heard Ghost on the radio, but the chorus of Hips has been running through my head all morning. The other two songs didn't really grab me. They seemed to use the guitar almost counter to the song, which will take me a little getting used to, but it was an interesting approach. neal ======================================================================== From: iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu Subject: Re: Pass me those grits, Ms Siberry! How can anyone compare BBtB to any of Jane's other albums and not walk out shaking his head with disappointment? Some words I would use to describe this album are: hokey, weak, derivative... Thank goodness she took so much time out after BBtB before releasing WIWAB. Luckily, my other $32 purchase, "The Walking", is wonderful. > Anyone care to recommend other Siberry albums that fall more into the > Walking/WIWAB genre? You've got the two best Jane albums.
