Phew! Nice stories, but they did cost me a few hours of sleep :( Now I have just one question left: Am I right if I assume that the fuzzy blue Ecto T-shirts have the cover of Ecto as their picture? Or is there another reason why so many people seem to be driven off if a bunch of people shows up wearing them? BTW: My hair is dark blonde (how boring... at least my eyes were sky blue as a baby (now they're more like grey)) and I have to second Mitch's remarks about cutting it: about three times a year. But as Mitch's it will be SHORT compared to others' here at the end of these periods. Uli /usr/lib/sendmail -t < Subject: Re: Happy concert reviews... Here is the first call for submissions to An Ectophiles Guide to Good Music. The idea of the Guide is to let us share our musical enthusiasms with each other. We hope you will feel compelled to let us know what you think of the various artists that have been mentioned on Ecto (and please add entries for those who aren't on this list and should be). Many thanks to the volunteers--Michael Blackmore, Jens Brage, Jim Gurley (you didn't think *he* could escape, did you?), Anthony Kosky, Alan Moorse (and maybe Brian Bloom)--who are going to help compile this thing! We're going to start with artists/groups whose names start with A and see how it goes. The backbone this list is the SiG playlist Vickie posted in r.m.g. (Thanks, Vickie). We want this to be fun, but we also want to include all the relevent info, so please bear with us. **The important thing is you being able to share what you think is important about this music.** And feel free to respond even to people you think will get a lot of entries--because they may not! Please respond to: ethelred@u.washington.edu by Wednesay, April 13. Late responses will likely not make it into the first edition of the Guide. --------The Ectophiles Guide to Artists starting with A-------- NOTES: --Please respond with one artist per message. It will make it way easier for us to sort through incoming messages). If you can use the artist's/ group's name as the subject line that will help even more. --Our aim is to give you a chance to share info about the music that interests you (and that doesn't) and why--to help to other ectophiles looking for new music --We included a comparisons section because even though in principle we don't like them, in practice they're useful. --Unless you request otherwise, your name & email address will be attached to the subjective stuff --Please use smilies to indicate any sarcasm or humour(!!) --Don't feel compelled to fill in each section if it's awkward for you to get the info. If we have blanks we can try to fill them in later. This isn't meant to be a discography of each artist--its main function is to give us a more organized way of letting each other know about artists we love and want to talk about and think other ectophiles might be interested in (or might need to be warned about) --If an artist has a number of albums please give quick reviews of each that you feel you can talk about. --We reserve the right to (carefully, gently) edit responses. --Please send responses only to ethelred@u.washington.edu; send comments/questions to neile@u.washington.edu or marylou@bnr.ca --Deadline for A's: April 13. Late messages will be accepted, but likely won't appear in the first edition of the guide. THE ARTISTS: Adult Net, Alice, All About Eve, Altan, Tori Amos, Kerri Anderson, Laurie Anderson, Annabouboula, Area, Arson Garden, Virginia Astly, Aster Aweke--and anyone else whose band or name starts with A that you think ectophiles might be interested in. PANEL 1: Calvin (over the sleeping Hobbes): "'Tiger! Tiger! Burning bright, In the forests of the night." PANEL 2: Calvin: "Blake wrote that. Apparently the tiger was on fire. Maybe his tail got struck by lightning or something." PANEL 3: Calvin: "Flammable felines--what a weird subject for poetry." (Hobbes stirs) PANEL 4: Hobbes (awake but still reclining): "This is why I try to sleep throu gh most of the day." Vickie writes WRT the Academy Awards: >Al Pacino! Yeah! Yay! Which naturally reminded me of _Mad_ magazine's spoof of "Saturday Night Fever" years ago. In the real film, there is a bit of business in which the John Travolta character preens before his bedroom mirror for awhile, then leaves the room exulting "Al Pacino! Al Pacino! Attica! Attica!"--to the consternation of his grandmother, who stepped into the corridor at the same time. In _Mad's_ version, she responds with a mantra of her own: "Horny pervert! Horny pervert! Bellevue! Bellevue!" :-) As mentioned sometime earlier, John Prine and Lucinda Williams will be doing a benefit concert for the Old Town School of Folk Music Friday evening at Orchestra Hall here in Chicago. Another interesting thing is that she took outrageousness in terms of costumes to new heights (that was *before* Madonna discovered JP Gaultier). I remember when I saw her in Athens in 1985, she wore something like a bikini where the bottom half was shaped like a cat's head with a tongue sticking out... I think she wears that in a video of hers too... ;-) Re: Oscars. *yawn*. The only one I felt deserved it was Emma Thompson although I haven't seen Howard's End. Add Neil Jordan to that list too. Vickie will undoubtedl y be pleased to hear of this. WBEZ's Andrew Patner replied to my sending him a Happy FAQ, saying I had anal- yzed the station well and suggesting an additional person there to introduce to Happy's music. He apologized for his delayed response, explaining that he firs t learned that he was on the net from reading Eric Zorn's column in the _Trib- une_ last month. It occurs to me that the unique brand of humor on WBEZ's _Artistic License_ being what it is, they'd be likely to preface any feature they did on _Equi- poise_ with a vignette from Lou Christie's "Two Faces Have I." Sounds like a marvelous idea for a lead-in to me :-). WBEZ's "ask the management" program last night featured a call from someone suggesting they run _Mountain Stage_. The management observed that WDCB now runs it Monday afternoons at 3. In retrospect, I now regret that neither I, nor anyone else on earth, called to put in a good word for _World Cafe_.
