Hopefully not for much longer. The good side effect is that I was able to catch up with all ecto digests which were filling up my mailbox. Right now, I want to tell you about last thursday to saturday which had good surprises concerning my 3 favourite local bands. Thursday morning while still in bed, trying hard to convince myself to get up (always hard work), the radio played a song which I immediately recognized as a new song from Peacock Palace. That evening I tried to get their new album, but was only able to find a CD single of it. Nevertheless, the album should hit the stores very soon. The next day I was watching a music magazine on a new news channel on our cable, which features a virtual host, similar to Max Headroom. There they had a short portrait about Peacock Palace, which also included pieces from the video for the new single "Heatwave" and from their last hit "Like a snake". The album and the video were made in New Orleans. After that I switched to MTV, only to find the last quarter of a new song by "Bobo in white wooden houses" which was absolutely brilliant. While they were "only" a traditional rock band (vocals, bass, guitar, drums) on their first album, they now have discovered keyboards (at least for that song). The two reviews of their new album "Passing Stranger" that I've read in the meantime were very much in favour of it. Again, I hope to find this album very soon. Saturday morning then, I catched an hour program on Deutschlandfunk (radio), which had the Rainbirds as hosts. They selected the music for it, announced the songs and talked a bit about their own releases and projects. I can't remember the whole track listing (have to listen to the tape again), but in addition to 3 of their own songs they played a Prince song, "Gloria" from Patty Smith, a piece from Beethoven and Mozart, something from FM Einheit and even music inspired by a reading of a work from Borroughs. It was a very interesting selection. Unfortunately it seems that me missed a performance of Brecht's "Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder" in Duesseldorf's theatre, where Rainbirds and FM Einheit had written the music for. Alright, I'm afraid I have to do a bit of work today. Glasgow is their homebase and where the band was grounded 7 years ago. It's hard to place them cause of the contrasts inside the band itself - from the rough guitarist Ally McErlaine (seems like she loves the slide and I love her playing) to the gorgeous voice of Sharleen Spiteri. Their first album _Southside_ was fronted by the mega-hit _I don't need a lover_ and the album itself sold over 2 million copies. But they are not known for their studio-acts but for their live-shows which is what I've heard incredible. I myself first got to know them through their second album _Mother's Heaven_ where Eddie Campbell on keyboard had joined the band permanently. After I'd heard their song _Why believe in you_ a couple of times I wanted to hear something more of them and went to my local music-shop check them out. What first stuck me was the sound or let's say the great amount of it. Needed a minute or two to get used to it but after listening to the first 3 songs I'd decided - I had to buy that album. I bought their first album later on but somehow I like their more spontanious and "back_to__the_roots" type of music on their second. About Carole King : I knew Charles Larkins played bass in The City - Carole married him shortly afterwards and they were married a couple of years. I bought an CK album the other day just to find out that it was the same as one I had before just with another title and cover *ponder* Just like they've done with Fleetwood Mac's _live In Boston_ but there they only changed the cover at least :) About suicide : I'm very sorry for you Steve. I know how it is to loose someone and suicide is something very hard to understand. Very easy to blame oneself for what happened. Would it have been better if you knew something? I guess not. One of the things that stopped me to take my own life was exactly the thought of the ones who I would leave. With the music I pulled myself entirely out of it. Vickie : I haven't got the time to read through your story yet but I will I assure you. I just want to comment something - I don't believe you were to weak to commit suicide - actually you were all to strong. And selfish? *ponder* A weak person would have done it cause he/she would have seen his/her pains as more important than the values around him/her. You were willing to forgive - some people can't/won't forgive. So I say once more : You ARE NOT weak and absolutly not selfish!!!!!!!! About my own ideology : First of all this is not written to offend anyone. If I do hit someone go into yourself and try to find out why :) After building myself up again after the nightmare I went through I've tried to put some positiv into my thinking. I've done that through writing diary (both to find out who I am, why I do not like/do like a person and to get it out when I'm real angry/sad etc) and through reading books about personal crises in different levels of our lives (that includes a lot of psychology). I've got very interested in parapsychology and it's effect on my life and others(for you not very into this - parapsychologists work with what we call the sixth sense (intuition is one of the fields)) I just can't go very deep into what I've come to (maybe another time) but here is some of it : I believe (at least I do now) in positiv thinking. All negativ forces are just causing more negative (just like the norwegian banks :)) It was a long way to come this far. It's hard to get to believe in other people after the ones you've believed in let you down. After a lot of thinking and writing I wrote down a lot of rules I wanted to follow to do something positiv not only for myself but for others as well. 1. What you ever do don't let your feelings hurt another person. If you think you can hurt someone - keep quiet! 2. If you got to hurt someone whatever you do think about it once more and if nothing helps do what cause less damage. 3. If a person says something negativ (real bad) about someone you know just say : Nice of you talking about him/her. I'll tell him the next time I see him :) (*grin* That person will keep quiet for some time after- wards :)) ) 4. Do not tell someone about a mistake in front of 'a lot of' people. Wait for a more convenient moment. (This is directly connected to my first rule. So I'm not trying to say that we shall not discuss but we don't need to hurt eachothers feelings real bad for that reason, do we?) So by following these 'simple' rules I am doing something for other people to build up a positiv 'picture of things' (call it what you want to. I just think of everything like a painting. I remove all negative spots by adding a new rule to the ones I already got. The rules above were the ones I started with so there are a lot more :) ) in my head. What I really try to do is to spread positiv thoughts. Every human being has something they do better than others. So not tell people what they ARE NOT good at but what they ARE good at. About the death of my cousin : Even if I had expected it would happen sooner or later it really shock me as my father phoned me and said my cousin was dead. He was sick for many years and as being two years older I remember very well how he was before he got sick - I mean before he got real ill.....He was sick most of his life. His lungs got bad and the last time he couldn't nearly sit in a wheel chair. It really hurt to look at him. So when I think about him I try to remeber him like he was many years ago - playing soccer ( he really loved it!). My youngest cousin is also beginning to get sick and I guess he hasn't got much of a chance he either. His motoric is getting less good and he is more unconsentrated than before. BUT I think it is important to give him as normal life as possible. Hard but the only right thing to do. The reason why this illness is hitting this family that bad is that my aunt and uncle were cousins. Marriage inside the family is never good, just look at the Royal families in Europe. To Mary : Yeah you are getting to me at least : Time to get something to eat :) Have a nice day everyone...........!! Did anyone else see Saturday Night Live this week? It was a repeat of the Tim Robbins/Sinead show... you know, the one where Sinead sang the Donovan song and then tore up a picture of the pope "We must fight the *real* enemy". Well, they showed her singing that same song (a cappella), but she held up a picture of a baby instead... anyone know whether this was a different taping, a very impressive overdub? I know they said that in rehearsal she had used a picture of not the pope, so maybe this was video from the rehearsal? Anyway, it was almost as shocking this time... I had really wondered why they were recasting this show, due to all the controversy. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 29 Mar 93 08:28:22 PST From: tjshadb@deneb.csustan.edu (Troy James Shadbolt) Subject: Happy in a Catalog I just received a new catalog from Backroads Music, they are expensive, but sometimes, they are the only source for certain things. Spelling error are most likely theirs- they don't seem to proof read. ======================================================================== HAPPY RHODES "Equipoise" We are very happy to introduce Happy Rhodes to Heartbeats readers. A prolific and often intense singer-songwriter, Happy Rhodes is poised for broad acceptance -- 1993 may be her year for wide recognition. And "Equipoise" is the album to do it. Happy's previous release, "Warpaint," crossed into alternative realms, with its stark lyrics & verbal images painted across a landscape of lush, modern music. Happy's voice, with its four-octave range, is a cross between the sensual style of Kate Bush or Sarah McLachlan and a rootsy ritualistic African poetess. With "Equipoise" she has reached a balanced maturity, conveyeing her expansive messages in a canvassed setting of stunningly original compositions and unpredictable musical backings. Often multitracked, it is Happy's voice that is most striking. She shows impressive contriol, sometimes deep and authoritative, other times light and delicate. Bew forewarned that her four earliest releases are packaged with cover art that is not for the squeamish, but that the songs pave the way for Rhodes' development as one of the more intriquing singer/songwriters of this era. As her song states on "Warpaint," "Words are not for Cowards." It's time to get Happy. Also available: "Warpaint", "Ecto", "Rearamament", "Rhodes II", "Rhodes I". CASS $10.98 CD $16.98 enjoy. *** ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 28 Mar 93 21:18 EST From: robert@deepspace.nj00802.sai.com (Robert Lovejoy) Subject: On The Air! Hi Ecto, Well, as I type this Happy is on the air in Philly! My tape is rolling, and I just got off the phone with her, on the air. I was going to ask about Ecto, but I was on hold for so long I got REAL nervous. Suddenly I was on the air; she recognized me right away "My name is Bob.." and I wound up asking the inane question "What's the greatest challenge/reward of your career?" She answered well, played "Look for the Child", then Jody Brown, Bob's daughter, called and asked her to do another concert! She also got a call from Greg in Athens, PA, who said she was wonderful. She played a cover of a David Bowie song, and did Save Our Souls, too. Ed Sciaci(Shockey) did a decent interview, but not up to Vickie's high standards! The interview ran just under an hour. Greg, the tape will be in the mail tomorrow! Those of you who get this tape, I wish I'd stuck to my guns! At least you'll get to hear my voice, but I sure felt like I asked a silly question! (forgive me KATENESS and have mercy on my mortal soul for joking so and taking your voice in vain! ;-)) Evidence: 1) If you play "Love and Anger" backwards you can distinctly hear Kate saying "I'm going to move to America and change my name to Happy Rhodes and start a new music career". 2) Kate is barefoot in several of her videos (hey, it was good enough for Paul on Abbey Road! I'll explain the reference if there's anyone who doesn't get it, just ask!) 3) They're both english speaking female singers (I mean what are the odds of that!) 4) Kate and Happy have never been seen at the same place and time. (Of course, neither have Del or Kevin, but that's another somewhat related conspiracy!) 5) Their lasts names are both something you'd find on most interstates! (Please don't kill me for this: Roads and Bushes!)
