Having done so, I submit the following: Thursday night: 1) caught the tail end of a set by Apaches of Paris, a local (Austin) band that was pretty good. Kind of country rock, the sort of thing that Lone Justice was doing in the 80s. Spoke to the lead singer, Julieann Banks, and she invited me to a show the next night. 2) walking down 6th St, met Goober of Goober and the Peas, one of the best of the new "country punk" groups. Hard to miss a 6'+ guy in a white suit and ten gallon hat. 3) saw another country punk band, Grandsons of the Pioneers, from Washington, DC. Really tight sounding, fun songs. 4) walked past the Big Hat show, but skipped it to get back to my hostess. Kicking myself over that, since when I did get home she spent two hours on the phone anyway-- so I *could* have seen them, like Vickie said I should. Friday night: 1) in-store appearance by "bluegrass punk" band Bad Livers at Tower. OK, but not spectacular. 2) stopped off at the Omni Austin for a show I never got to, because I spent an hour and a half in the hotel bar with blues singer Jonell Mosser. Fascinating woman, with a real love for music. She recommends that I check out Ashley Cleveland later tonight. 3) Stop by that Apaches of Paris show. 4) Go to see the Meat Puppets. They run way late, and Dallas band Buck Pets, who pretty much suck, go on. I bail to see Ashley Cleveland, who is only a block away. Really remarkable blues singer. 5) Go back to the Meat Puppets, now under way. OK, but not great. Saturday night: 1) Try to get into the Neon Angels show. Way too packed. Means I'll have to skip Goober and the Peas, too, since they are in the same club. 2) Go back to 6th St with some women who also wanted to bail from the club in 1), walk in the first bar to get a beer. Ansia, a punk band from Mexico. Not too shabby. 3) Walk down the street to see Jeff Black. Nice, but doesn't grab me, so I start walking to the Jonell Mosser show. 4) Get to the area early enough to go to another club to see Killbilly, yet another "punk bluegrass" band. This one, though, is amazing. Really kicks some major butt. 5) Then see Jonell. What an incredible show. Does anybody know if she, or her band Enough Rope, have an album out? If so, I *want*. People with radio shows specializing in female vocalists should look into this as well. All of you. 6) Try to get in to see Rev. Horton Heat. Too crowded, so I end up seeing Flowerhead. Ennh. Saturday night: 1) Dig, a local band. Not too bad. Some interesting new material in an "alternative" vein. 2) The Alejandro Escovedo Orchestra-- probably the best set I saw all weekend. Consider that Carla Olsen was simply playing *between* the main sets, and you have an idea of how talented the main sets were. Find his album on Watermelon Records and buy it-- it is that good. Five hours later, I was on a plane back home, or rather to Memphis, where I met Naomi who works for a NPR-syndicated show called "Fresh Air(e?)". We compared notes about the weekend while waiting to board our plane. Once on, I slept the sleep of the well-partied. They have a column on them, with a picture, where they talk about Mo-di and the first album, and present some interesting info about some of their percussion (shaking grape nuts boxes! ;-)). b) Finnish female choirs and artists. This was mentioned yesterday on ecto, so I was surprised to see their world music column dedicated to this theme. Mentions the band that Brian B (?) mentioned, and also has some sources for the recordings. c) KaTe mention. In their Alternative A-Z feature they mention KaTe's _The Dreaming_ as an example of the first uses of sampling and Fairlights in popular music, before the urbanization of this technique. FYI. Tannya's songs grow on you. When I first got the first Belly EP last summer I wasn't too sure I liked it, since I'd been used to her Throwing Muses days, but since then I've worn a laser grove in my CD over that one and the other CDs of Belly. Right now Belly is the alternative radio media darling, which I guess could backfire on them in the future; but at least someone else besides me and Michael has some appreciation for the finer things in life... Has anyone else noticed just how programed and formula-centered these supposed "alternative" radio stations and formats are...what was once a real break from the status quo (at least in Seattle) seems like just another marketing niche. There's only so much guitar/base/drum/Michael Stipe vocals I can stand... if you want to see what I mean just watch MTV's 120 minutes... what I guess this does is push the truly creative, the wildly original and "alternative" bands/artists further out there... comments???????? ======================================================================== From: Kjetil Torgrim Homme Date: Thu, 25 Mar 1993 20:20:34 +0100 Subject: Re: some samples, from martin! athena.sdsu.edu [1] carries a lot of sounds, including complete samples of songs in the Sun .au format (which is the same as NeXT's .snd).
