I for one tend to avoid replying to your opinions because Your points (not just this one) were well formed and well taken. I just want to make it clear that I am NOT some obsessive flamer (well, not in the net-sense anyway ;)) who will flame anyone who disagrees with me. I'm actually very much the opposite, and am much fluffier than I care to admit. So it would break my heart if, through my obnoxious flaming, I kept someone out of a discussion, and...(sob) I'm sorry, I'm getting emotional. Has anyone felt this way? That prospect really DOES bother me a lot. If I've spoiled things for anyone by being too antagonistic, I'M SORRY! (sniff) > > I suppose this post is in some ways hypocritical. Hmmm, I don't know why but nevermind.....Nothing important anyway. I read the mails about all the flaming stuff over again and I liked very much that you understood Chris's point Drewcifer. I myself try to avoid to post something when I'm very upset (angry that is) about something. The mails I would write then would maybe hurt someone. Sometimes I've gone past the line and I've felt miserable a long time afterwards. I hate to do such mistakes. So that's my view on this matter. Hope it will not be anymore of these things on this list. I didn't sleep last night cause I needed to get into a normal rythm again after going 'around the clock' a bit too many times lately. So I spent the time listening to music. KaTe was heavily represented with _The Kick Inside_ and _The Dreaming_ the two albums I bought first and still love the most. I listened to Crash Test Dummies' debut-album _The Ghosts That Haunt Me_. I both the music and especially the lyrics. I have to laugh everytime I hear _Superman's Song_. I wonder when their second album will be released. I heard somewhere that there was been written three songs under the title _Ode To My Lungs_. I just can't wait to hear those :) Did I tell I sent the order to get Happy's albums? I guess I did :) I'm not the only one to wait for those.....My friend can't nearly wait either :) I ordered an autographed Warpaint and Equipoise for a little girl in my hometown. She is not in family but as I don't have any sisters I consider her as one.......She wrote me a very nice letter and thanked for a cassette I had given her 3 months ago. I just loved it so I decided to give her the CDs. I don't quite know how to say what I want to say without it coming out sounding as if I'm telling you what to do or how to "behave" in Ecto. I guess all I can do is tell you how I feel. I hate flame wars. I've been in the middle of far too many and one thing I learned, as applied to me, is that sometimes in the heat of the moment people can say things they regret later. I mean that it's happened to me. I sometimes found myself re-reading my flames and being appalled at myself later. I think that's the danger of flame wars, they can quickly degenerate into name- calling horror shows. It all depends on the individual, of course, but anyone can say something they regret if they're caught in a bad mood or just the wrong mood. Flame wars can get out of hand, and then it takes a lot of time and effort to rebuild bridges that might have been burned in the heat of the moment. I agree with pretty much everything Christo said. Ecto is nice, special, because flames are few and far between. I know that there have been spectacular flame wars in e-mail, and though that makes me sad, I think 'better in e-mail than in Ecto' and heave a sigh of relief. Ecto was born out of a massive flame war (at least, it was massive to me) and I think I'm not the only one who keeps that in the back of my mind. Even I forget though. For instance, I should have sent my SOS-miffed post directly to Doug instead of the list. Also I know that I often say things that could *potentially* cause a flame war, but for some reason no one has flamed me, either on Ecto or in e-mail. I just think that the atmosphere of Ecto is different somehow. It's an atmosphere that promotes discussion instead of flames. It's not goody-goody, it's just, well...nice. I think I'm too close to it to be able to describe it properly. All I *really* know is that flame wars scare the hell out of me. They caused me to distance myself from gaffa, and they drove me out of asar. I'm not saying that a flame war on Ecto would drive me away. I don't know how I'd react, to be honest. There's never been an all-out flame war on Ecto, just...mmm..."toaster ovens" :-) which I just skip over. Some have just fizzled, some have been taken to e-mail. Either outcome of fine by me. If I want a rousing flame war there are plenty of places on the net I can find one (or start one :-)). (I should have said above that flame wars scare me when they occur in groups I care deeply about.) Strangely, I've spent over an hour on these paragraphs, mainly because I'd sit and stare at the screen for minutes at a time trying to put my feelings into words, and I still don't think I'm doing a very good job of it. I worry too much, I think. Ecto is strong, and could surely withstand anything (short of Jessica pulling the plug, of course) but it just wouldn't be the same if a discussion turned into a no-holds-barred flame war. It would be changed forever, and I guess that's what I worry about. > True, but I appreciate the recreational and intellectual value of a good, > not-always-fluffy argument. I apologize if you were offended or affronted; > my intention was neither to disparage your opinions nor to cause you > emotional stress. I forget that not everyone enjoys debate as much as I. Doug let me know that it wasn't in the digest (thanks Doug!) so I'll briefly explain. Last Thursday I fell and then had chest pains. I called my (HMO) doctor and was told to go to the emergency room. I did, and then spent hours hooked up to heart monitors and IVs & things. They almost admitted me, but sent me home instead. I'm *so* glad! I was worried about missing work, but then ended up staying home on Friday. I went to work today and everything seemed cool. I also went to the doctor and everything seems cool there too. He didn't seem to think that the pains were anything significant, so I guess I'm ok. I had felt a bit stupid for going to the emergency room and "wasting their time" but now I don't feel so bad about it. (Thanks again, everyone who sent me well-wishes! It's a kind of show with a top ten and jokes that he compiles and distributes to his friends every month. He introduces 20-25 new songs and we, the participants (25 at the moment), have to chose our favorite ten songs. Recently, Gustav asked me to collaborate on the next show, what means that I could introduce my favorite songs. We recorded the show last night and had a lot of fun. Originally, I had selected 50 songs, then I reduced the number to 24, but finally I could only play ten :-( I tried to introduce a great variety of styles from heavy (Noiseworks, Magnum) to Celtic music (Capercaillie, Hi Geoff!). I had to leave out Tori and Kate but I played Happy's Flight. Gustav was very enthusiastic ("Hey, great music. Who is this?") but I don't know how the folks will react. They are having a strange taste, sometimes. The favorite artists were Michael Jackson (Heal the world - urgh), Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, etc. But also Tasmine Archer, Peacock Palace, Eddie Brickell - so there's a little hope :-) Well, it's not a big thing, but a good opportunity to introduce Happy. Will Happy make it into the top ten? Will she prevail against Michael Jackson, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran and Sting? Will other ecto-related music reach the top ten, like Sarah McLachlan, Suzanne Vega, Capercaillie, K.D. Lang, Toni Childs? Will I lose my faith in other people's taste? Hi, has anyone else here seen the videos of Mylene Farmer? She's a French singer and her videos are more like small movies she did the soundtrack for. Several of her videos are more than 10 or even 15 minutes long. I know only one other video that's almost that long, and that's Jacko's 'Thriller'. But Mylene's videos are different from Thriller. And now I finally found the next video tape with her videos, one I was searching for quite a while. It's called 'The Videos' (now how's that for an inspired title? Oh yeah! more inspired than the other tapes I have from her. The first one is called 'Les Clips', and since she's French, that's probably even more simple than 'The Videos'. The other one is a live tape and is just 'En Concert - Le Film'. But the simplyness of the titles has nothing to do with the videos themselves. Oh, the 'En Concert' even has a little bit in common with our beloved one's tour of live: Almost every song she wears a new costume... Just raving, Uli P.S.: If there's someone out here who knows better than me: Are there any other tapes availlable from Mylene? P.P.S.: Ok, I received a mail order catalog before I was able to send this out. As it goes, there is another tape from Mylene, called _L' autre_. Of course I already have ordered it... ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
