Happy dates? ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 21 Mar 93 15:05:37 EST From: kosky@saul.cis.upenn.edu (Anthony Kosky) Subject: Suzanne Vega Well I went to see Suzanne Vega in Phily last night. The concert was rescheduled from last Saturday because of the blizzard. Actually I hadn't got tickets for last weekend's concert, partly because I found out about it quite late and didn't think I'd get decent seats, and partly because it was one of those affairs where they schedule two concerts for the same evening. which I'm not keen on. However a friend had a ticket for last Saturday, and couldn't make it this weekend, so I bought his ticket from him. It turned out that it was a standing only concert, so bad seats weren't a problem (and being 6'4" was very useful), and if Suzanne and the band were tired from the earlier concert they certainly didn't show it. I'm still amazed how lucky that blizzard turned out to be for me. Unfortunately Kitchens of Distinction weren't supporting her for this show. I say unfortunitly because, while I don't know anything about Kitchens, I'm sure they couldn't have been as bad as the person who was playing support. SV and her band, however, were great. The band sounded really good and were very tight. Suzanne's singing and guitar playing were excellent, and she seemed very relaxed and had a good rapport with the audience. She really seemed to be enjoying herself on stage. I have a long history of missing SV concerts, so it seemed like about time that I finally got to see her live. I've been into her music ever since the release of the first album, which is still my favorite. Mind you 99.9Fd would probably have surpassed it as favorite SV album by now were it not for sentimentality. Consequently I was very pleased that most of the songs she played were from the 1st album and 99.9Fd. I would recommend that everybody should try to catch this tour, were it not for the fact that last night's was the last show of the last leg of the tour, so you'll have to wait till next album now (trying very hard not to smirk here :-). Looking forward to meeting some other ecto-people at 21st Century next weekend... -Anthony ======================================================================== From: Kjetil Torgrim Homme Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1993 03:27:31 +0100 Subject: Re: Wrong Century, Sounds(?) She does music very much in this vein -- I just recently picked up her laserdisc _Illusions_, which showcases her in live performances of songs made famous by Marlene Dietrich (whom she resembles) and Piaf, including the above "Milord". She's also strongly associated with the work of Kurt Weill. I first noticed her as part of the *large* cast of Roger Waters' _The Wall: Live in Berlin_. During the trial scene at the end, she plays 'the wife' in fluorescent green dress and red fright wig and gives Nina Hagen a run for her money vocally ("You little shit, you're in it now..."). Or do you mean someone else or something else by that phrase? I made a mistake in my last Nina Hagen & Lene post. Lene did official vocal work on Nina' sixth album NINA HAGEN (not to be mistaken for her first NINA HAGEN BAND), not her fifth album NINA HAGEN IN EKTASY. Nina's EKTASY is a good album (with the best cover of the song My Way that I've ever heard!), while NINA HAGEN is not so great! *************************MICHAEL BLACKMORE************************** "I'm talking to myself, talking to myself. We were discussing music and our personal opinions of it...opinions which differ. Who is to say what is the "truth"? I like Our Time in Eden. I gave my reasons for liking it but you found it abysmal trash. I said I thought The Wishing Chair was wonderful. You said it was bland and uninspiring (or words to that effect. I don't have the message in front of me). Does this mean I am wrong? From your letters on this mailing- list discussing the work of 10K maniacs it would appear so. Since when has music been a matter of right and wrong? It's personal expression...not only for the artists themselves, but for the people who listen to the music and find meaning in it. Another thing. Why should I attempt to discredit your ideas if you feel so strongly about them? Do you want someone to convince you that you are wrong? Somehow, that seems to be a rather patronizing and offensive position for anyone to take. I've enjoyed the discussions on this list thus far. I've enjoyed experiencing other points of view. This mailing list is being read by many people and providing an alternatative opinion on an issue is not necessarily a declaration of war. I'm not sure if I have expressed myself fully here. I will just have to take the chance that I have not been misunderstood. I was going to prep up a review of Equipoise this weekend, but nooooo! I decided not to. I realized, hey, I don't like reviews of music (doing them that is). The reason(s) follow: Music doesn't usually work on me on an intellectual level. I rarely know what a song means until I hit an emotional place/situation that parallels the song then it becomes clear. More accurately (with good music) different aspects of the song become clear has my life is reflected in them. Good music is like as crystal with many facets. You cannot see all the facets at the same time, but it constantly changes as you shift your perceptions. Reviewing it shifts this process (forgive the phrase) into the left brain's domain where it's categorized and frozen into a "correct" view of the song, thus losing the beauty of the individual facets of the crystal to gain a general understanding of the shape of the crystal (losing the trees for the forest). It ain't right for me! A good example is Her Kateness' song Love and Anger. I've been listening to the song almost four years, and loved it dearly! But only recently did it's meaning have any real impact on me. I was listening to it after a particularly intense therapy session (with many horrid little details of my past floating in my head) and HEARD the song! I was, of course, totally blown away. If I had categorized it before I probably would not have found such a direct connection with the music, because it would have been effectively boxed by my left brain and ignored in all future dealings! When you focus on a goal you often lose sight of the path. (my old Tao tinged background showing :-)) Enough! P.S. I figured out why the song He Will Come makes me think of women waiting for men returning from war: it's because of a poster of women in WWII waiting by the shore, looking out at the sky and sea, with the caption "He Will Come Home Again!" Interesting how the mind associates! *************************MICHAEL BLACKMORE************************** "I want the power of life and death!" - Crow T.
