As many of you know, Happy's concert at the Mann was headlined by the Maniacs. As you also know, Happy had severe technical problems during her set. The problem was that the Maniacs arrived almost two hours late for the sound check! Happy, being first on the program, did not get a chance for an adequate sound check as the other artists went first. The Maniacs road crew were rude and unprofessional at best in the way that they handled themselves that night, with unfortunate results for Happy. Now I know the band itself was not personally responsible for what happened that night, but having been there, my opinion of the band has sadly dropped. I'm still mad at WXPN for cutting her off as she started her last song, especially in light of knowing the Maniacs played 45 minutes longer than they were supposed to in the union contract! And I guess I'm a little disappointed in the Philadelphians who arrived late and entered the show as Happy's set was in progress. But, I still live here, still listen to WXPN, and still leave 10,000 Maniacs on when they play a song. What happened was the past, and life goes on. Happy came back with Equipoise, her career continues to grow, and not too many years from now, Happy may be headlining a concert somewhere, and a fading once-popular band called 10,000 Maniacs may be her opening act... Well, that might be a reason if they would ask professional studio musicians. But I believe that H&K are having many friends who are good musicians and who would be proud to appear on their album for less money. It also depends on the contracts they make. They could pay a musician a fixed price, say $500, or they could give them a share in the sales. That reminds me of a British musicians who's now living here in Osnabrueck. A rumour says that he has played a part on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. Mike asked him if he wanted to have 1000 bucks now or if he wanted to be given a share in the sales. He didn't believe in the success of the album, so he took the money ... Meanwhile, I've worked through the lyrics of Sting's 12 Ten Summoner's Tales. Most of them are love tales, some of them are so funny that I burst out laughing, for instance the one about the seven brothers who had one mother but seven fathers (Love Is Stronger Than Justice). In many of her songs, Happy uses aliens and monsters as companions, friends, confidantes, and even protectors. They definitely have played a positive emotional role through her troubles. I don't think it is out of line to assume that somewhere along the line, she expected aliens to save her, if not the world. However, as she woke up, she realized the ridiculousness of that idea. In this light, then, _Save Our Souls_ would be addressing something that she dislikes in her self, something her light side discovered in her dark side. After all, that is the theme of _Equipoise_. [The lyrics still irritate me, though. :) ] Vickie, regardless of whether a European tape dubbing project is needed, it's still probably faster to zip my name and postal address off to your Scottish correspondent. Let her/him know that the cost would be US$5. A tape with his/her name on it is ready and waiting. As for establishing a European branch, I think that some thought and research would be needed, comparing costs, postage, mailing times, and demand with what I can do from the New World (How much newer is this side of the pond, anyway? :) ). Part of the reason that things go so well with me is that high demand means I can buy everything from tapes to packages in bulk, making it _much_ cheaper. I haven't made a precise count, but I've mailed over 250 tapes in just over a year of this project. Ah, Colorado weather! Tuesday saw gorgeous clear blue sunny skies with a high of 69degF/21degC. Today, just two days later, a high of 32degF/0degC is predicted, and 4in/10cm of snow is already on the ground with more falling. You know you're getting old when... Mail accepted by Justin (justin@crim.ca) or Liz (lizzylou@world.std.com) You won't believe it, but I will actually be in Montreal at exactly that time! Fantastic. This will give me something to *do* there. Justin/Liz, please send me any more details you have about this. As far as dates, the ones I can make are actually April 7 (night only), April 8 (day & night), April 9 (day only), April 10 (night only), and April 11 (day only). I guess I would vote for April 8. I still can't get over the coincidence. Looking forward. I don't think it's going to be a horrible amount of work at any one time. The only skills necessary are the ability to deal with email and an editing program of some kind to put things together. And working on this Mary Lou and I discovered that we have a lot of friends in Ottawa (and writing poems :) :) ) in common. A surprise indeed. I didn't know of any others in the DFW area, much less at the same site of this conservative bastion. Not quite the cultural oasis, eh? BTW, Dallas music stores Sound Future and Sound Warehouse have both Equipoise and Warpaint. KERA has both. The DJ on last Tuesday apparently likes Happy, and promised to play a cut from Equipoise. Unfortunately I didn't stay up late enough to hear it. My spouse Jean had a curious comment yesterday. While listening to Eq. she said Happy ought to write the music for a play! Jean majored in English but is now a Compleat Costumer; her work for the local Plano Repertory Theater has been outstanding, IMNSHO. This is a big complement from a lady who knows quite a bit about theater. Maybe Happy won't ever go this route. (Then again, who would've thought Frank Zappa would ever play in Carnegie Hall?) At least Happy likes the Bard. "Our queen and all her elves come here anon." (WTIC) I too am glad to see Happy not join Andreas Vollenweider(sp?). Better to see Happy let her own creative talent blossom. Let her play the game by her rules. Her non-standard long passionate and articulate songs work for/in me like no others do.
