HGP tapes More from Philly Explanations and stuff Candles and incense Finally! ======================================================================== Subject: Saturday in Philly! From: "Mark C. Carroll" Date: Mon, 23 Mar 92 14:06:05 -0500 Greetings all! Here's my summary of the events of the ecto gathering for the Happy concert on Saturday! Around 3:30, we started gathering at Eden. We started with a table; wandered into a small side room when more people showed up; then moved to a larger side room, and finally took over a very large room in back as more and more folks came. While we were eating, we hijacked the cashier at the restaurant, and sold him a spare Happy ticket. Around 5, we wandered over to the University museum. We walked in the front door, and asked where the show was. Receptionist: Are you with the show? Greg: Sort of. Receptionist: The phone's been ringing off the hook all week. YOU should have been answering it. Greg: Well, we're the fan club. Recep: Wow. (Gives directions. Complains about phones.) Are you _really_ the fan club, or did you just make that up? (20 jackets open to show off our t-shirts.) So, we wander around to the stage doors (outside!), and stand. We pound on the doors, the promoter basically tells us to get lost. Jessica waves from inside. So, we stand outside for two hours, freezing. We hear the sound check through the stage door. Happy's mom shows up, and gets inside. We still stand outside and freeze. Finally, at 6:45, we go in, and take over the 4th and 5th rows. Then - the concert. I don't know the setlist, so I'm not going to try to list songs. All I can say is, Happy is an amazing performer. Just amazing. I don't know any way to make words do justice to her performance. My brother and sister are both musicians, and I've met a lot of performers, and seen a lot of concerts. I have never seen a performer as fantastic as Happy. All of the honesty and intimacy of her music come across when she performs live, even more than they do in her recordings. The concert was simply 2 1/2 hours of heaven. Her voice is magnificent; her stage presence is fanastic. The way she moves around on stage is very catlike; that's the only way I know to describe it. Afterwards, I spent around 15 minutes where all I could say was "Wow." Once I finally got down to earth enough to know what was going on around me, Kelley (the backing vocalist) and Martha (the keyboardist) came out to start packing up, and I listened to them talk for a while. They told us that the fan club was invited to the press party at the hotel. So, after Greg put his recording equipment away in the EctoMobile (I'll let someone else tell you about the ectomobile. Suffice it to say that my neighbors actually wanted to know what kind of wierdos stayed at my house this weekend!), we went over to the hotel. We all got to meet Happy for a while at the party. I got the impression that she really thinks that we're wierd, but that she appreciates having a supportive group of fans. We also had all of the band members, and a couple of roadies come up to us and say "It's no fair - you have better shirts than we do!" And we got totally ignored by the hotel staff. It was over 2 hours before we managed to get tea and coffee at our table! I think they were afraid of us... Which is understandable, considering the odd sculptures being built at the tables out of the table settings. Finally, the party broke up. We said goodbye to happy, showed her the ectomobile, and started splitting up. The crew in the EM (Greg, Liz, Mark, Kiri, and Angelos), plus Doug and Jeff all followed me back to my place, to camp out on my floor. Sunday morning, after Doug and Jeff took off, we drank coffee, ate blue bagels (they actually make blueberry bagels in Delaware, which are really blue all the way through), and went back into Philadelphia, to meet Vicky, Jessica, and Joe. We had no clue of how to get to the hotel, so Greg just decided to follow signs to "Central Philadelphia". Then we stopped and asked directions, and turned out to be one block away from the hotel. So, off we went. Right after we met them, Greg and company had to leave, to get the van back in time. (And it was snowing, so they really needed to be on the road.) Jess, Joe, Vicky and I went over to the Franklin Institute to watch "Ring of Fire" in the Imax theatre. (Imax is a huge dome projection system.) I strongly recommend visiting the Imax to anyone who gets into Philly - it was pretty amazing. Finally, after the Imax, Joe and Jessica left for Jersey, and I dropped Vicky off with Steve, and headed back to Delaware. Anyway - the show was a truly incredible experience. I think I'm probably going to try to road-trip up for the show Meredith is arranging, so once we have dates, any Maryland/Philly/Jersey ectophiles who want to chip in on head up, get in touch with me! || Mark Craig Carroll: ||"I live to see my fondest dreams realized, || Univ of Delaware, Dept of CIS|| Of living under the sights and sounds of || Grad Student/Labstaff Hacker || the gifted, Who gave so much to me" || carroll@udel.edu || - _Feed_the_Fire_, Happy Rhodes ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 23 Mar 92 14:25:02 -0500 From: gb10@gte.com (Gregory Bossert) Subject: special ecto-zine issue! ok ok ok, i know we haven't actually got *any* issues of the ecto-zine released, but undaunted, i am announcing a special issue: Waking Up -- Happy in Concert which will contain the reviews that are pouring in even now, plus (perhaps) reprints from Albany/Philly reviews and previews, and many many photos... so, it's up to you! we are looking for: - stories and impressions from the shows and associated events... - *anything* from the press!!! or from WXPN! those of you who live in/near Philly, keep your eyes and ears open! - PHOTOS!!!! lots of people were snapping away, so don't everyone send every photo....! but maybe two or three of the best, both of Happy (and the band) in concert, and of Happy (and the band) before and after the shows.... remember, ecto is a fanzine... and stories and photos of fans and the general excitement surrounding the shows are as welcome as those of Happy herself... :) (and *boy* are there stories!) email stories, transcribed articles, etc, to ecto (of course): ecto@cs.rutgers.edu other comments, questions to: footah@world.std.com photos or newspaper clippings, etc, go via snail-mail to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 thanks in advance! i will post more details as they develop! i'll be here/i'll be footah! -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "word's weren't made for cowards" -- HR ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 23 Mar 92 14:16:25 PST From: barry@gnu.ai.mit.edu Sorry, I don't get it jessica? Anyway, at about 3:00 I left Vickie at the train station as she headed on the last leg of her trip back to Chicago. She said to say Hi to everyone and that she had a great time this weekend (and she wasn't refering to the night at my place as I must have been the worst host (lots of studying) and we didn't even have good food in the room!) Greg, I'll mail to Ecto a newspaper clipping I have advertising the Philly Concert. There was also some magazine that Vickie gave me from Albany that had an article on the concert as well as concert listings which mentioned Happy. If someone else has one of these, please send it to the fanzine. If you don't get one, I'll sacrafice mine. Oh yeah, Greg, is footah a noun or a verb? (or maybe even an adjective, or, God forbid, a dangling participle?) I want to rethank Bob Brown for the Ecto SIG tape. Just started listening to it, and it's fantastic! Woj, let me know when you start making copies of the Albany tape. Now that I've seen a lot of you, I must admit that Ecto mail is a lot more interesting! I have a feeling I'll be less of a lurker in the near future! One last non-Happy question, I want to pick up a Dead Can Dance album. Throw your suggestions my way. Thanks. -- -------------- "Won't you take me to, Funkytown? Stephen Golden Won't you take me to, Funkytown? golden@eniac.seas.upenn.edu Won't you take me to, Funkytown? I think I have some explaining to do concerning shoe sizes. Those of you who weren't there are, I'm sure, quite confused by now... After the show in Albany Happy came out and met those of us who were there, then disappeared for a few minutes to talk to Vickie then came back again. We were standing around talking to her and I complimented her on her boots, which I thought were gorgeous: black suede that went up past her knees (and didn't fall down, even when she boogied to "The Flight" ;). I decided to be funny and tell her to watch it, I was going to steal them in Philly, so first I asked, "What size are they?" quite inocuously. She looked at me funny and said, "Do I really have to answer that?" and everybody else was thinking I was strange for asking it. I explained that if she said they were my size, I'd steal them. So what size are they? "Well, if you must know, the boots are 10s, but that's not my real shoe size". Instant infamy: just ask a silly question. So it became a standing joke. When we were in Philly word had gotten around that there was a Trivia Question around, What size are Happy's boots and who had the balls to ask?. At the post-concert party she went around to every table to make sure she met everybody, and I wasn't at the big one, which she got to early on. Steven, *how* did you get her shoe size out of her, anyway??? Doug informed me that she had revealed it, and Steven warned me that she had said she was going to make fun of me about it later (don't worry, she did :). Meanwhile, other Ectophiles were asking other band members their shoe sizes, and I want the record to clearly state that I had nothing whatsoever to do with that. :) More later...got other stuff to do and you all have enough reports to read at the moment. :) +----------------------------------------------+ | Meredith A. There was also a shopping list on the back of the set list, along with the cheat sheet I mentioned earlier, which if I recall (Greg, correct me if I am wrong) included: 9 blue sticks (?????) 2 White candles Incense I don't remember any candles on stage, but there were hints of burning incense during the end, so can anybody remember if these were used?? I've been listening to WXPN since 7 AM this morning. Around 9 I started the first of 5 phone calls telling them that they need to tell all the listeners about how great the show was and to play something - anything - PLEASE! Arghhhh...I got the same guy each time and he said - "Oh yea, you're the guy that called before. I told Karen (the DJ this morning)...I'll tell her again." Well, Karens show came and went with no Happy. World Cafe is next and I know from past experience that that show is not flexible at all for requests. And again, no Happy. This afternoon I got through to the afternoon jock - Johnny Meister. He listened to my entire story about how great the show was. About 5 minutes ago he played "Feed The Fire" but made no mention of the concert. I mentioned on Saturday to some of you that I thought the Philadelphia promotion of Happys concert, both by the promoter, and WXPN, sucked. With the right promotion she should have sold out 2 shows here. WXPN has gone down considerably since Oct-Nov of last year. It's too bad. Arrrgh again....Bob Brown ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
