It's been a hectic two days, to put it mildly! --jessica ======================================================================== Date: 17 March 1992 11:48:23 CST From: Subject: Fried (Emerald/Kelly) Green Thoughts for the Day It being simultaneously Primary Day where I am, and St. Patrick's Day both where I am and where I'm not, there comes to mind a quote from Brendan Behan appropriate (sort of) to both of the coinciding occasions: "St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, and they became judges in New York City." (I don't know how it is in New York now, but in Cook County, a lot of politi- cians--especially judges--seem to win more on the strength of their Irish names than anything else, to such an extent that judicial primaries have come to be popularly known as the "Irish Sweeps." ) Decades ago, during my childhood, my grandfather once related to me a song popular, for some reason, among his college classmates in the 1910's, to the tune of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home:" "St. Patrick was an engineer/He was, he was/St. Patrick was an engineer/He was, he was/He invented the calculus/And left it here/For us to cuss." It only occurred to me this morning that this might have been an indicator of the state of Anglo-Irish relations at the time, carried over to the U.S., to the extent that some would even be driven toward a revisionist history of science. (The aforesaid branch of mathematics was, of coiurse, devised by Sir Isaac Newton.) On the other hand, it is a bit of a stretch to think that the spirit of the Easter Uprising would penetrate that deeply into the student culture of Iowa State University, circa 1916. Followups on two items mentioned recently in these pages: The opera _Lakme_, featuring the Flower Duet, was written in 1883 by Leo Delibes (1836-1891). A variety of full and partial recordings are listed in the Phonolog at the record shop across from my dentist's office (look EctoMa, no cavities :-) ). Turning to more recent music, Guns 'n Roses guitarist Slash will be the new spokesman for Black Death vodka. The paper quoted a spokesman for the product, which is made in Iceland: "He's perfect for the Market. He's the only one Black Death wanted." Naturally, the brand is now being accused of trying to pander to kids. As a final commemoration of St. Pat's in these pages, a song from Behan's play _The Hostage_: THERE'S NO PLACE ON EARTH LIKE THE WORLD There's no place on earth like the world There's no place wherever you be There's no place on earth like the world That's straight up and take it from me Never throw stones at your mother You'll be sorry for it when she's dead Never throw stones at your mother Throw bricks at your father instead The north and the south poles are parted Perhaps it is all for the best Till the H-Bomb shall bring them together And there we shall let matters rest There's no place on earth like the world There's no place wherever you be There's no place on earth like the world That's straight up and take it from me If the elECTOral :-) process is going on today where you are, vote. The music is nothing like the music he produces - more of a folky bent with traditional French Canadian roots (no surprise there - he is Canadian). He's best known as a producer and has produced a number of albums with Brian Eno including some by Gabriel and U2. His name also appears on an album with Michael Brooks and Brian Eno (not sure whether Lanois was involved in producing this or actually played on it). Geoff says that this album reminds him somewhat of Gabriel's _Passion_. I haven't heard of "Zap Mama" but if you are interested in female acapella groups you might consider trying to find something by "Sweet Honey In The Rock" (on the Flying Fish label) and/or "Four The Moment" (on a small Canadian label - Jam Productions). But is now seems that, in the great words of Miracle Max (Billy Crystal) in _The Princess Bride_, it's only mostly dead; and to be mostly dead is to be partly alive. No need to worry; those of us who are keeping the respective home fires burning have proven ourselves facile at mak- ing our own entertainment. The results of yesterday's various elections were of course provocative, from the vote of a majority of South African whites for the phaseout of aparth- eid to the continued forward motion of the Clinton bandwagon. Locally, the most notable political news was local. The veteran U.S. senator from Illinois lost his first election in 42 years; the upset victor would be the first black woman ever elected to the Senate. By an interesting coincidence, she lives on my street, about a mile and a half due north of my place. Even closer to me than she is--half a block, to be exact--is the line between two congressional districts, both of which figured in the anti-incumbency stampede. My own con- gressman turned up last week as one of the House's leading check-bouncers; he lost his seat to an alderman (and vice-chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party) who had been a leader of the Black Panther party in the 1960's. (Could he be considered sort of the Tom Hayden of the middle west?) In the adjoining district, the incumbent--notorious for his ethnocentric rhetoric--finally went down, 40% to 60, to a more moderate opponent who had tried unsuccessfully to oust him in the previous two elections. Last week, the now-victorious opponent was shot at just blocks from my house; it was this incident, in fact, that in- spired the subtitle of this posting. (Though it would make the ideal slogan, methinks, if Happy ever runs for the Albany city council.) The _Chicago Sun-Times_ responded by running a feature on similar mishaps involving politicians over the decades. The most notable one involved a legendary alderman/saloonkeeper, who in the 1930's was plinked at in his bar by a cop with whom he was having an argument. He responded by introducing a bill in the city council to require cops to leave their guns at work. A significant number of state legislators were also ousted, many of them by women; this includes the incumbent in the district where Vickie lives. Recently, I visited Vickie's place of residence to deliver printouts of some of the ecto postings she's missed while her hardware's in the shop. En route from the L station, I stopped at a record store in the neighborhood to browse, and noticed a sign displayed prominently, that a vote for "uncommitted" in the primary would really be a vote for Mario Cuomo. It is an interesting coincidence that two different residents of Albany, New York should have supporters in the same community in Chicago. Amazing (or Kafkaesque, depending on your point of view) how I could go for nearly 52 lines writing about Chicago politics, before finally running out of ecto angles. :-) Back to things more germane. Thanks to Meredith for setting the record straight on several statements I made in the last day or two. I've begun to wonder if I'm astrally connected to Amelia as well--the newspaper accounts say her plane-parts were identified, in part, by a bottle top from her usual brand of stomach remedy; while I, in turn, am still feeling the effects of my gastronomic adventures in connection with St. Patrick's day (which I'll have to say more about some other time, hopefully during the expected lull in traffic, before the expected burst of commentaries on the concerts). But even if my stomach got through yesterday with some difficulty, my teeth got through it with no difficulty at all. If it's any consolation, it's supposed to snow here as well. I'm sure the concert and related activities will go well regardless. Mitch Date: 19 Mar 92 07:10:00 EST From: jody_ferguson.asw.navairtestcen%pcgate@NATC-FW.NAVY.MIL Subject: LITTLE EARTHQUAKES REVIEW To: "warmroom" I know a lot of people who post to Love-Hounds hate Axl Rose and unless they have a subscription to _Rolling_Stone_, have chosen to pass on the latest issue since he is on the cover. Well there is a certain record review in there that may be of interest to some here. Here it is, provided as a service to the Axl-impaired... (Three and a half stars) LITTLE EARTHQUAKES Tori Amos Newcomer Tori Amos's songs are smart, melodic and dramatic; the deeper you listen, the hotter they get. Amos shares common ground with art- folk songstresses like Kate Bush and Jane Siberry, but while they often deal in abstruse, poetic terms, Amos has a tendency to cut to the quick, to face facts, to call a rape a rape. _Little_Earthquakes_ is an often pretty, subtly progressive song cycle that reflects darkly on sexual alienation and personal struggles. Aiming for a delicate balance between the earthy and the ethereal, Amos shifts from a whispering coyness to full-throated earnestness (overearnestness, at times) and a quivery vibrato-laden holler - akin to Siouxie Sioux's. >From the outset, all is not roses. In the opening tune, "Crucify", Amos sings, "I've been looking for a savior in these dirty streets/Looking for a savior in between these dirty sheets." The difficulty of asserting one's own voice is the subject of "Silent All These Years." Rage often bubbles below the sensuous surface. On the subject of sex, Amos is ambivalent and ultimately poignant. The teasing Kurt Weill-meets-Queen cabaret act of "Leather" sets up a marked contrast to the album's most chilling track, "Me and a Gun." After the denser production approaches on the rest of the album - with strings, creamy electric guitars and fanciful arrangements caressing her piano foundation - we hear the stark sound of her unadorned voice taking the role of a rape victim, who endures the attack while desperately rationalizing that "I havent seen Barbados, so I must get out of this." By the time the refrain in the closing title track comes around (Give me life/Give me pain/Give me myself again"), we feel as though we've been through some peculiar therapy session, half-cleansed and half-stirred. That artful paradox is part of what makes _Little_Earthquakes_ a gripping debut. -Josef Woodard ...And there you have it. I think maybe _Rolling_Stone_ hires the worst critics in the business. They always tend to ruin a song or album for me by "explaining" it to me. "Artfolk?" Would anyone here consider Kate to be a "folk artist?" I think most of these critics presume more than they know. BTW, there is also a review of the new Spinal Tap album, _Break_Like_ _The_Wind_. I think the amps may go up to 12 now. Jody ======================================================================== Date: 19 March 1992 12:13:11 CST From: Subject: Acts of faith and other loose ends Glad everybody liked the Albany concert. I assume that the two postings in today's incoming are representative of the sense of the collectivity as a whole. My personal gestures of solidarity yesterday with those in attendance-- as usual, sincerely meant but ultimately without much practical effect--were two: 1) I carried Rhodes I and II and Warpaint around with me yesterday in the hope that I'd get the time to listen to them. I didn't, but it's the thought that counts, innit? :-) Ironically, I have now found the time to listen, a day late and a dollar short as usual; my sleep and fatigue patterns are now going through a state of flux, so it may be appropriate that I heard "I'm Not Awake, I'm Not Asleep" as I started this nonessay. I have, unfortunately, just now noticed that spending all day in my coat pocket has caused the finish to become a bit dulled in one area of the cassette box; happily, the cover art still shows through clearly. 2) Channel 9 showed _Vision Quest_ last night, which I characteristically slept through for the first hour, during which much of the relationship between Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino develops. It did occur to me, however, that Fiorentino might be a credible prospect to star in that hypothetical major motion picture, _The Happy Rhodes Story_. (My original choice for the part, months ago, was Laraine Newman, based on her performance in _American Hot Wax_; until Vickie pointed out to me that at her age, she'd probably be too old for the part.) The paper reported yesterday that a Russian-German crew lifted off Tuesday to spring our old friend Sergei Krikalev from the Mir space station. Krikalev recently asked a television interviewer, "Is it true the Russians are going to sell the Mir space station...along with us?" Apparently not; but Russia is trying to attract paying passengers; Germany reportedly paid $24 million to send its member of the extrication crew. Probably just as well that I have little else to say at this point, since the system is responding very slowly and it therefore is taking quite a long time to type out character strings that make sense. Perhaps I shall use the down time to acquire a taste for oily meat, so as to be able to scarf down a set of Philadelphia steak sandwiches as my gesture of solidarity for the Saturday concert :-). Part I [ I don't have time to finish this posting before I have to leave work to pick up my daughter, but I thought you'd like to hear about the concer right away. I will post the second half tomorrow. ] I left work Wednesday about 1, and was lost in Middletown by 3. As I arrived at Meredith's house, she was posting to ecto. I had her add a quick weather report. We got to the hotel around 6. No music in the car, but great conversation. When we got there, a large woman was waiting outside. I thought it might be kIrI. She came up to the car and asked if we were ecto. Yes! Ectopic telepathy is growing. I checked in, and we all went up to my room. Before long, we got hungry and made a food run for Chinese, leaving a note in the lobby for the rest of the pack. Footah! and Angelos arrived in time to finish kIrI's dumplings, around 7:30, show us pictures of Kate and of Greg's Katemas party, and tantalize us with hints at who "mystery.person" might be. Woj, Jessica, and Dave arrived about 8:45. We put on Tori Amos on Jessica's CD player, and ate and drank (thanks kIrI for the bagels, and me for the drinks). As usual, we talked about everything and nothing. The only topics I remember is how much did Kevin really object to Greg digitally taping the show, and what the consequences of Hannah Bush's death are going to be on Kate and her art. At 9:15, I mama-ed everyone out to the car. The eight of us squeezed into Greg's station wagon, along with his $2000 of recording equipment. The QE2 was about five minutes away. As we drove past it toward a parking space, Meredith thought she saw Vickie. ... And it was! Doug's "friend" he was going to have dinner with turned out to be Ecto Mama. Thanks to Happy, who paid for her trip. We stood outside for a while gabbing, hugging, and coping with two men -- one who wanted to help us carry the recording equipment, and the other who wanted $3.50 for a chicken dinner. Eventually, to avoid them, we went inside. It was a small, dark, smoky bar, with black light. As we walked in, Happy and Kevin walked out. Happy very succinctly told us that she was too busy to talk then, but would catch us later. Jessica solved the recording problem by going into the concert area (the back room) and announcing that we were recording, and asking where we should set up our equipment. Her bravado worked. They cleared off an area, and Greg set up. He also wound up getting in free (although he tried to pay later on). The only one who got carded was Jessica, so Meredith did not need either her German student ID and accent or her guise as a Rhodes roadie. The back room was tiny, dark, and smoky, too. There was a bar in the middle, and a few movable stools, with and without backs. The stage was raised, and had a couple feet of meshed fencing separating us and it. When Happy started, there were about 100 people in the room, most of them standing for the three hours we were there. While we were waiting for the opening act to start, they played good but loud music. We found out later that Happy had selected it. Others can report exactly what they played. The only pieces I remember are a Kate song and excerpts from Jon Anderson's _Olias of Sunhillow_. We all set up shop right next to the stage. Vickie was closest, a foot or two from where Happy would be standing. On the floor we could see Happy's notes on what the two sets would be. I copied this down, and will post it after the Saturday concert, since there is no good way to deal with spoilers on ecto. If you would like to know beforehand, send me email. The show started at 10:40. Mitch Elrond opened for Happy. I found him loud and tedious. His lyrics were okay, but I couldn't stand either his singing or his electric guitar. Some people in the audience liked him. Back in my room afterwards, there was disagreement on whether he was any good or not, but there was consensus that he was not appropriate to be opening for Happy. Happy thanked him for opening, and then put him down. It was hard to tell how serious she was. I'll let other people tell you about the music (although they should probably wait until after Saturday, for those who don't want to know ahead of time). I'm still pretty much a Happy virgin, so to speak, and don't have much to compare it with. I was surprised to see how emaciated she looks. The music was excellent, and again, loud. I wore earplugs, which cut the volume down enough for me to enjoy it. She has an excellent band, especially the background vocalist who got the job instead of Jessica and a Chinese-American bass player, Ron something. We first saw Ron before the show, polishing all the guitars. He wore a neat hat, which Happy gave him a hard time over. I spent part of the concert imagining how it would have sounded had Jessica gotten the job. Those standing in the back of our group didn't have to imagine: Jessica was singing along throughout the concert. As was Meredith, less audibly, who also danced through a lot of it. I took a lot of pictures, as did a few other people. kIrI, Voy, Miss Vickie, and Footah! all tried to audio tape the concert. We know that the first three each got some of it, and all had various technical difficulties. We don't know yet how Greg's came out. In between sets, they sold t-shirts. Extra-large only, for $14. Poly-cotton. I bought one, but I don't like it much. Jessica's is much better. Happy played 28 songs, and finished about 2:15. A few minutes after the show ended, the band came out to mingle. As I said, I have to head out. Tomorrow I'll post the rest of the story, including the answer to the eternal question, "What is Happy's shoe size?" -- David. ========================= lubkin@apollo.hp.com ========================= The way to a man's heart is with a broadsword. ------- ======================================================================== From: kIrI Date: Thu, 19 Mar 1992 16:22:49 EST Subject: i just got back after driving behind morons the whole way - arggh! somehow i completely lucked out...after 30 miles out of Albany the snow stopped, and it was perfectly clear driving...yippie... I think I'm back on here....been having troubles lately. Can anyone give me info on where everyone is meeting Saturday? If there is anything I can do for all you folks coming to Philly I'll sure try. I've really been enjoying all the exchanges about the Philadelphia show...since i love the city. I've never lived there, but have visited many times. How great to have Phila be the site of a major Happy concert! 2. I finally got an Xterminal. THANX to whoever gave us the GIF files on hardees! Have fun, you all. BTW, HAPPY SPRING! Hi again - I just spoke with Stephen Golden on the phone. We kinda think that everyone is meeting at Edens at 3:30 as was suggested in previous posts. Is that so? Also, as per his previous request, I'm gonna dupe the Ecto SIG tape for him. Just thought I'd mention it in case someone else was going to do so. If anybody one else coming to Philly doesn't have it and wants one, let me know. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone! Today I received the accumulated 70 mail-messages and digest of 2 weeks, so I better hurry with responses before everything breakes down again. kIrI asked: > i've been tossing the idea for a video HGP around in my head. i was > curious to see how many of you have access to a camara. this would be > a difficult project cause of all the different types of systems, NTSC, > PAL etc, but I think it would be really wild. what do people think... > is it possible, how many people can get at a camara, how many people > want to expose their mug to Happy etc. etc.??? Expose my mug??? Claudia brought a nice tea-mug from Boston, but I'm sure Happy doesn't want to see that, and you probably don't mean that. ;) Yes, it is a wild idea! Unfortuantely we don't have a camera. Something simpler: everybody could send a picture with the tape and they would all go to Happy? > From: klaus@inphobos.w.open.de (Cosmic Vagabond) > Date: Fri, 14 Feb 92 23:27:48 GMT Oh my God! What is this doing in Digest #185 (March 16.). That even beats my snailmail-record with the HGP tape to Chicago. OK, my turn to talk about snow. :) I wouldn't be surprised if Doug is already curious about the snow situation over here. We haven't seen much of it. Two or three days in the whole of winter where it was cold enough that the snow stayed for the day. But last saturday we were surprised to find the scenery covered when we woke up. It was gone 'til noon, but it looked beautiful in the morning. I had been browsing through some old digests and found the following from Vickie, where she recommended some things for us in New England: > there to say that I'd now been in all of the lower 48 states and b) visit > Ogunquit [Stephen King fans will know why]) and while we were in New We didn't remember that, and we are no fans of Stephen King, but we _did_ stay in Ogunquit for some nights over christmas! Would we have suffered horrible nightmares if we knew the SK connection? While talking about our last holiday, why not tell you about our next. :) It is definite now; planes have been booked. Detroit,MI? ! (but only half an hour) Orlando,FL ! Boston,MA ! Chicago,IL ! You better hide, we're coming! ;) Our Florida part (Sept 2.-12.) will be mainly Orlando with MagiCon, the 50th World Science Fiction Convention (of which I've been a supporting member for 2 years now), followed by the mandatory visit to Disneyworld. Are any of you planning to visit MagiCon? On our way to Chicago we'll make a quick visit of Boston (12.-14.) to say "hello" to some Ectophiles and collegues of Claudia. Chicago (14.-20.) will be another Ecto event (what a surprise :) but we also plan to drive into a yet unknow direction (but not splash-east :). You see what our priorities are. :) First, look for a place with lots of Ectophiles. Then, look if there's something of touristic interest in that area. (recomendations for the 'Then' part are already welcome) Yawn, will I go to sleep, or watch Postmodern on MTV, hoping for some interesting videos? Cheers, Klaus. ___________________________________________________________ ( "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. ) ) Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond."
