However, I must warn you that while there are sidewalks or grass that you can walk on, the area is not too scenic. And it may be a bit cold for a walk... Anyway, about the area: Well, the area is not bad for huddling in blankets. Sure, we'll look funny, but I think I expected that. In addition to what Dave said, there is a McDonalds inside the Hospital and usually a couple of food trucks (cheese steaks) between the Hospital and the Museum. They'll have hot food and Coffee, so you don't need to worry too much about the cold. I think 3:30 at Eden sounds good. Can we make it official? Also, with regard to the video HGP, I may be able to get time in our TV studio where some of you could record yourselves. And, I've thought about checking out a portable camera to shoot some candid Ectophile footage, but I'm not sure where I'd put it when the concert starts. Also, a personal request. Can someone who is going to the Philly concert make me a copy of both the HGP and the SIG tapes. I'll pay you for the tapes this weekend. I keep forgetting to send blanks to Vickie... (as approved by the photees...) may i point out (and could some one pass this along to Vickie -- i haven't had a chance to call in a while) that in all the debate over how Vickie looks, people (including some whose opinions i value very very highly) tended to say "it doesn't matter how you look"... and i must disagree -- how you look (and how you feel about how you look) *is* important... i do strongly feel, however, that it is not at all important to conform to the standard models of appearance as presented by the american media (for example), and that is n'er so often the point as when one's weight comes into debate... i have met Vickie, and often fondly perused my KaTe KonvenTion photos... i have also seen a photo of Vickie from some years ago, and to be sure she has gained weight, and is heavier for her height than the standard factory-issue fashion model (ever notice that the models in media addressed at women are on average much thinner than those in media addressed at men? (IM-non-statistical-o)) anyway, the point is, i *like* the way Vickie looks now: i think she is an attractive and delightful person... just one footah's opinions... -greg ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 16 Mar 92 13:53:34 PST From: barry@gnu.ai.mit.edu Well, jessica, times that I'd likely be on it, would be the following: modnay 8:00 am - 2:00 pm thursday 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm friday 11:00 am - #:30 opps 3:30 pm Those are the times, when I'd likely be on, but usually I'll just get on it for a few minutes, see if anyone shows up then leave. Vickie said to tell you all that Tower Records in Chicago has gotten in a few copies of the Warpaint CD. Parts of Amelia Earhart's plane reportedly have been found in the Pacific islands. It is believed that this will resolve the lingering ambiguity about what became of her after she disappeared in 1937 (apart from her having in- spired, I gather from reading these pages, the title of Meredith's radio show). Yesterday's paper carried an item about a village in Hungary where numer- ous residents have complained of their hair having turned purple, particularly when viewed under fluorescent light. There was much searching for the cause, and much speculation that it might have been caused by a local radio transmitt- er. It was finally traced to a detergent that the affected people had bought from the same door-to-door salesman. Brenda Kahn is the only other artist on the Community 3 label, besides Arson Garden, to have come to my attention. (I'm sure the label has others who have not). I acquired her album some months ago, but have never gotten around to playing it. Either Axl Rose, or some other member of Guns N Roses, has signed on as the commercial spokesman for a brand (I forget which one) of vodka, on the basis of his rough-and ready image. I'll try to remember to look up the details. Today's incoming posts included one from Klaus, which first appeared in these pages a month ago. I know from experience that the various Rutgers machines have lately been slow to disseminate postings to us all, but still... The Swansea machine appears up to something; today I got at least three copies of bounce notes for each of my postings the last several days, claim- ing that not only Court, but also Terry and Stephen, were unknown. Those of you who are residents of either Illinois, Michigan, or South Africa are hereby admonished to vote tomorrow. (Madonna--coincidentally a Michigan native--put it more convincingly on MTV a couple of elections ago; but I don't think I'd come across as credibly in red lingerie :-) ). I plan to post more detailed ruminations on all that, and the coinciding St. Patrick's day observance, tomorrow, assuming that nothing unexpected happens to me at the dentist. (The whole idea of novocaine and its expected and actual efficacy somehow, at a time like that, lends a whole new dimension to the sentiment "If you feel anything be brave, come forth, let it show." :-) ) Mitch ___________________________ "Every man needs something to believe. Another machine along the line to the Internet went down and we are cut off again. So, some notes from the office before I'm too much behind. In the last week(s) quite a lot of things popped up, so this will be a letter longer than usual, but with Vickie offline right now (and hopefully back very soon) I think you will allow another pseudo-Vickie. :) There are some comments directed at Vickie, but I'm absolutely certain that she will read all missed digests as soon as possible, so that can't stop me. Let's start with some old digests: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Vickie about a possible SiG-of-the-Month: > 2-hour Kansas City show. Which reminds me that I was listening to a local radio station that day, and they were doing a special show about female vocals. Not a selection I liked. I'm absolutely sure that I like *any* Suspended in Gaffa show much MUCH more! Vickie, when will they be aired in Germany? They mentioned an archive (no, not a net archive :) in Cologne, specialized on female composers, mostly classical music, but they also played something from Laurie Anderson as an example. Angelos about the same topic: > I tend to prefer mixed compilation tapes. They take longer to make but IMO > are fun to listen to. And I get awfully weird when it comes to them... :-) Hey, while listening into one of my rare mixed compilation tapes I made years ago with some favourite songs, I found one which I'm considering to select for the HBP tape: David Bowie's "Sound and Vision" ... blue blue electric blue ... Terry pointed out: > Klaus.. sorry but I will not be able to get over to the get together > later in the month, but if any copies of the concerts are to hand > perhaps copies can be made for me????? Making copies won't be a problem. I'm sure it is going to happen anyway :) so another one wouldn't mean more work. If you don't mind the loss of quality by an additional generation tape. In the meantime the Happy Newsletter arrived here. I can't wait to get the 1st4 on CD. I've already reserved 5 slots in a CD rack, right after _Warpaint_. :) On another Happy-item: I've stopped using the Happy keychain for it's intended purpose as it was way too bulky for me. But I actually used it for 3 weeks. Now I took out the picture and put it on my desk, currently surrounded by pictures of 6 Ectophiles. Music """"" - KaTe Bush, Rocket Man, CD-single Finally seen this one in Germany. At two places. It took quite a while, and I'm glad to have bought it while in Boston. I can't remember that I ever heard it on a German radio station. The same for Tori Amos. Never heard her on the radio although you can get her album _everywhere_. While I'm talking about Tori: I've also read that a CD-single with "Winter" will be released soon. - Peter Gabriel, Sledgehammer, CD-single Nice surprise that one. A different mix of Sledgehammer and 2 more songs which I can't remember to have heard before. Highly recommended. - Sugarcubes, Stick around for Joy It's actually the first one from the Cubes that I've heard, although I've found out that they've released quite a bit. I like it, although I haven't yet found another song on the album that I like more than "Hit". Part of the European Ecto Party might see them in concert, as they are playing Duesseldorf the monday after the party. - Mari Boine Persen, Gula Gula I found it! Thanks, David, for encouraging me to get it! It is a very beautiful album! Talking about Real World releases, I still value it slightly less than PGs Passion, but that might change. Very highly recommended!!! In addition to the Sugarcubes we will have another Happy ersatz concert soon. Laurie Anderson will perform "Halcion Days, Stories from the Nerve Bible" on the 31th of Mai in Duesseldorf and we got our tickets today. Some questions: """"""""""""""" The success I had recently with asking about Mari Boine Persen encourages me to enquire about some more artists. Have you heard of a female a capella group from Belgium with the name "Zap Mama"? Again I found such a positive review that I'm tempted to go out and try to find it. Do you have some info about "Daniel Lanois"? I've noticed his name on the "end of the world" CD and recently on PGs Sledgehammer CD-single. I've seen two other interesting bits, which weren't very informative: - Annie Lennox has been reported to have finished a solo album Someone with more information about it? I can imagine it will be very different from the Eurythmics stuff, but I have no idea what to expect? - Tanita Tikaram has just released her 4th album Has someone heard it already? The 1st one was great, but the following ones were very disappointing, so I'm not sure if I should give her another chance. Months ago Vickie wrote: > ... and one by "The Rainbows" > which is, of course, The Rainbirds. I remembered that story when I found something similar last week. A friend of ours recommended Shakespears Sister to us, and I remembered seeing an advert for their latest album in "Musik Express/Sounds". I looked it up, a half page advert from the record company, and the title, in big letters, was written as "Hormonally Hours" instead of "Hormonally Yours". Claudia says "Hi". I arrived in Hartford in a snow squall. Global warming, my footah. ANYway, Dave I talked to you yesterday, no problem. I guess we'll be getting to Albany around 6 or so. I tried to reach Kevin yesterday to ask about a safe place to hang before the show, but I think they were gone to rehearsal already. I'm going to call this evening and see if they can hire me as a Rhodie so I'll definitely get in to see the show (it's 21+, fascist pigs ;), and ask about possibilities of meeting with Happy. I have a feeling the answer to that is going to be No, considering her reaction to possibly meeting Vickie before the Philly show way back, and afterwards she'll probably be dead. But it can't hurt to ask, so I will... As for Philly, I'm going down with woj, quite possibly on Friday, since there are friends of mine there and I want to get together with them as well. I've gotten recommendations concerning book- and record stores on South Street from a friend who comes from Philly, I'll bring the addresses with me for possible Sunday pre-departure entertainment. :) What else...had two exceedingly bizarre Happy dreams when I was home, one involving her playing the guitar in some Rococo-ized Munich cathedral and not being able to drown out the cello-playing Japanese girl in the chapel next door, and another where she was playing alone on the stage of one of the theaters at Wesleyan and after every few songs shouted out into the wings, "Kevin, where the f*ck is the band???" I think I got a bit too much rest at home. :) My mother loves Warpaint. She approves of my choice of musical obsessions- I'm doing well, she likes Kate and Natalie Merchant, too. :) Mitch, thanks for the Garrison Keillor Does Portland info. I'll be sure to listen.
