WRT MJM's query: Milla hails from Russia, originally. I don't know if she's Jewish, but as the ads for Levy's rye bread used to say, you don't have to... _vide_ "The Train," on the Indigo Girls' new album _Swamp Ophelia_. MJM's paean to the resurgence of a capella music in these pages yesterday somehow reacted with the release of the new movie _Wyatt Earp_ to recover the memory that the theme from Hugh O'Brian's Earp TV series--one of the more memorable bits of title music from a small-screen Western in the 50s--was done a capella. It even weathered the attempt of Harry Smith and Paula Zahn to cover (or was that remake? :-) ) it on _CBS This Morning_ yesterday. Needless to say, the most significant thing to come out of all this is that the number of action heroes from the past whom Kevin Costner has played exis- tentially has been incremented by one. (The others, of course, are Robin Hood and Eliot Ness.) WRT the aliens on the net, of whose movements Albert has kept us apprised: Presumably they would be covered by the legislation now pending in California, to withhold public services from the undocumented :-). Today WBEZ did an interview with Loreena McKennitt, in which she spoke of her world travels in search of material, _inter alia_. Between that interview-with -music and the one the same station did the other day with Zap Mama, it seems to me that this is a station where Happy can potentially get meaningful expos- ure, the cancellation of Stuart Rosenberg's shows notwithstanding. It was the first time I'd thought of them in probably 15 years. That makes it even more amazing that about a week ago I actually saw a current version in a local supermarket. "Space Food Sticks. A nutritionally balanced energy food, based on a product used in US space exploration." Complete with picture of suited astronaut on the front. Not made by Pillsbury, though (I seem to remember the US version made by them?). Made in Australia by White Wings Foods, based in Footscray, Victoria. I couldn't resist. Bought some. Taste more or less as I remember them--sort of like very compressed chocolate brownies mixed with gelatine. If any of you North Americans are feeling really desperate, I could probably arrange some sort of swap :) TMC: Just to say *something* vaguely musical: I have heard 2 CDs by This Mortal Coil--the original and one other (title forgotten). Should be megacool. Should be, but isn't, IMHO. I'm really puzzled and saddened by how much I dislike this album. Maybe Danny Elfman has been doing too many movie soundtracks lately, because he seems to have completely forgotten that Boingo is supposed to be at least somewhat *fun*. The melodies on this album don't seem up to par. The songs are so long that they collapse in on themselves. "Mary" sounds like a bad Yes ripoff. The cover of "I am the Walrus" adds almost nothing to the original. And the lyrics, unusually (for Boingo) lacking in humor, consistently try to make Important Social Statements but end up falling back on cliches that have been expressed better both by other artists and by Elfman himself. So what happened? Maybe I'm alone in this opinion, because I think the album has been getting generally positive reviews. I guess I'm just disappointed because I sense that it could have been so much more. It starts off wonderfully: dark brooding chords straight out of one of Elfman's soundtracks, enter drums, then four layers of classic Boingo mallet percussion freneticism, then the full band, but by the time Elfman starts singing after a minute or so, everything interesting that's going to happen already has. And *then* the children's chorus comes in . And "Insanity" is one of the better songs on the album! Does anyone else who has heard the album agree with me here, or am I just losing my mind, or worse yet, my taste? :) Oh well, at least it looks like August and September are going to be *terrific* months for music. I mean, Happy, the Judybats, Faith No More, American Music Club, Sugar, Sinead, Peter Gabriel, R.E.M. and Liz Phair?! Hog heaven! Over the Rhine was great, except that you couldn't hear a *thing* the vocalist was singing. Which is truly a shame. The day before the show I *finally* found Patience, their second release. It is *great* and I would highly recommend it, if you can find it. This band comes out of Cincinatti and as always I was amazed by the turnout at Schubas (enough to warrant two shows in one night). They have been thru Chicago a number of times. I saw one of my fellow ultimate-players there and he knew them from cincinatti. The guys tam and I saw in line said they'd seen OTR 8 times!! But when I asked them whether they'd heard Innocence Mission, who sound *very* similar, they said no. At times OTR sounded like Cowboy Junkies, U2, The Sundays, and Innocence Mission. That gives you a good range of their material. They have a great guitarist, a fine vocalist (whose voice is clear and Perris-like on Patience) and the *best* T-shirts I have ever seen. I particularly liked, and bought, the Patience shirt with the clock on it. It's de facto these days that shirts cost = 2 * ticket price (in this case tix:$8, shirts:$15) but they were also selling their first CD (till we have faces) for a measly $12. And they signed it too. The band has a great groove, the drummer and bass player (who writes most of the songs and to whom checks get made out!) are solid. They will be back home for a while now to finish up touches on Eve, their next CD. (I can't wait to see Vickie post all this same info.) Other good things in Chicago this summer: well, Moxy Fruvous is Wed. at Schubas. But Kristen Hirsh is playing Park West July 10 (sunday evening) for $13.50 (bargain) and *syd straw* is opening. That's a super dollar-value show right there. I called Park West and the guy said they haven't sold very many tix yet. I continue to be vexed by what sells in this town and what goes unnoticed. I'm *sure* Belly would sell out in a second at Park West, even though KH is arguably better. I really think it boils down exclusively to radio play and, even more important, MTV exposure. Mind you KH is way more mellow and introspective stuff (yay!). It will be cool to see what she does with these songs on stage, and whether she throws in any muses material. Has anyone seen KH live? As usual Lollapalooza is silly? I mean, I'd love to see Nick Cave, but why pay $50 to wade thru hours of crap just for half an hour of Nick? What a waste. BTW, can someone send me a list of the CD/Record stores most worthy of checking out in the Boston area? I know you guys have this info somewhere.... Thanks. So you shouldn't be at all surprised that the information is missing...let alone shocked! There's a really wonderful version of "The Cuckoo" on Custer LaRue's _The Daemon Lover_. Our friend Sens (aka "Sensitive" and "Caring" and other nauseating and unintentionally ironic nicknames) has clearly demonstrated himself to be totally incapable of being a responsible net.citizen. Or a decent human being for that matter. He probably gets by in real life simply because of the inhibiting barriers of dealing with people face to face. That and he lacks the power to inflict his own selfishness to any meaningful degree. However the only mechanism for dealing with such jerks at present is to ask his sysadmin to revoke his net privileges. And my limited experience suggests that most sysadmins really don't care about IRC much. So my suggestions in my previous post were made out of expendiency more than anything else. In any event I've talked to a number of people since my last post and learnt some useful things about Sens and who he is. If he makes a nuisance of himself again I think a letter to a certain sysadmin will be in order. :) I've a few ideas on this point, but I won't ramble on any further so as not to bore those ectophiles who aren't on IRC. I haven't seen any article about Woodstock II with her mentioned in it, but well, Holland wouldn't really write about Happy, I think. (They're too obsessed with Bob Dylan... :-6 ) Let's kick in another open door: I just bought the CDsingle "Gentlemen who fell" by Milla for a buck, and *love* it. She's got a strange accent, but the music has a nice warmth, and it all sounds rather pleasantly organic. "Clock" is a favourite, I am contemplating her album. (There are currently 12 CD's on my list, so it'll take a while though...) Someone suggested she'd written this song about Hitler. Hm, it could be. She isn't Jewish though. AFAIK she's Yugoslavian - it would be interesting to know if she's Croatian or Slovenian. The former had nazi sympathies, the latter didn't. (I am now talking WW II of course.) I was on holiday in Yugo- slavia some 5 years ago and noticed a lot of negative feelings against Germans. Of course, it was the only language we could use to communicate there, so that triggered a lot of dark faces... until we said we were Dutch... I'm getting away from my point here. I imagine Milla has had her share of history lessons :-) and was in some way inspired. As I said, I don't think she's Jewish, but the Yugo's have their own 'special' relationships with the Germans. ObDisclaimer: I am treading on thin ice here, since I know ethnic problems are always Hot Topics, certainly in Europe right now. So let me state please that I don't mean anything bad with the above.
