I also have their more recent appearance on World Cafe from last September. Anyone out there want this stuff to go into the TDP coffers? Anyway, to compensate for my disappointment I've embarked on a small project that I thought others might be interested in. I've been making a tape of B-sides from the Tori Amos cd singles and I was thinking of donating it to the tape dubbing project...that is if there is an interest, no one objects and doesn't get me into major trouble! (whats a few copyright laws between friends?);-) how does this tape sound to everyone? I know that others, like myself, can't find or afford all those singles but I've found that some of my favorite songs are located there. Between my friend and I, we have a good number of songs and though this was originally just for us, I thought that others might be interested. these are the songs we have so far: from the Winter single: The Pool, Take to the Sky, Upside Down, (another song I can't quite think of grr) from the PGY part 1: Honey, Black Swan from the CFG US: Daisy Dead Petals, Sister Janet from God: Home on the Range, Piano suite: all the Girls Hate her (two piano instrumentals) from Crucify Ltd: Here.In my Head, Mary from Crucy EP: Smells like teen spirit, Thankyou, Angie from China: Sugar, Flying Dutchman, Humpty Dumpty If you all approve and would like me to send this, I'd like to ask a favor from someone who has singles that we haven't included here..ie. Cornflake Girl UK limited edition with Case of You, Silent all Those Years UK ltd edition with Song for Eric. Would you be willing to make a dub of those songs and send them to me? I would be willing to provide the tape and the postage. The Hatchshell is located on Storrow Drive on the banks of the Charles River (it's where the Boston Pops perform on July 4). This a.m.'s weather forecast for Saturday is rain, so it may not be the ideal day for an outdoor concert. I'm going to play it by ear based on the weather. I think it's a marvelous idea; in fact, I recently made just such a tape in trade for some live Robyn Hitchcock stuff. Anyway, I have the Cornflake Girl (limited edition) single that you seek as well as a few other things you might want to add. For instance, I have the Silent All These Years (limited edition) which has A Song for Eric, Ode to the Banana King (part one), and Happy Phantom (live). Also, I believe the normal SATY single has a song called Thoughts that wasn't on your list. Also, I have her doing a cover of Ring My Bell on the Ruby Trax compilation and the track The Happy Worker from the Toys soundtrack. Also, I have both the Past the Mission singles, which would add another 7(?) live tracks. Sorry to hear about your predicament with Tori tickets. I'm happy to say that I'm not in the same boat as I have 3rd row center tickets for the Columbus show on July 5th (okay, I'll stop gloating). As far as this copyright business, I don't really have a problem with it, but if there are people who object I'll certainly consider their viewpoints. Personally, when the material in question is either (a) out of print, (b) extremely hard to find, or (c) really expensive, I don't have any qualms taping it. As such, I'll gladly tape you any/all of the items above that you wish. By the way, is that title a "Black Adder" reference? They have this bin of *really cheap* used cd's. I usually go straight to it (because I'm broke right now and because a lot of world and folk music usually ends up there)... Cost is 5 cd's for $10... :) :) :) Lots of promo's end up there, too, come to think of it... Anyhow, here's a list of some of my recent finds, with brief comments/reviews... SLEEPER by Tribe - What can I say, I've heard comments about them on various lists over the last year... I'd heard only one song of theirs prior to buying this.... "red rover" is on a promo compilation I have. Haven't given the album a really good listen yet, but what I heard I really liked. :) Cool... nice vocals, layered music... witty lyrics... yeah. THE SETTERS - a self titled album from this group... oddly enough my criteria for buying music that I haven't heard a thing about is to look at the cover, the song titles, and the list of instruments.... If I see instruments other than the usual... i generally go for it... Heh. This had an accordian listed... :) Don't even think it's that prominent on teh album, but hey... As it turns out, I quite like this... not sure how to describe it. Would be interested in hearing more about the group... CALLING YOU by Bob Telson - someone recently somewhere was talking about the movie SALMONBERRIES and a kd lang song in it.... Well... this album called to me, again because of a picture of Telson with an accordian on the cover... ;-p and because the songs on the album are from Twyla Tharp's "Sextet" and Percy Adlon's "Bagdad Cafe" and "Salmonberries"... Included is the song "Barefoot" which kd lang sings.... which is divine... Wish they'd included the version of "Calling You" with Jevetta Steele's vocal (what can I say, she's from my hometown of Minneapolis and has a wonderful voice)... I like this, you all probably know more about him than I... ANGELUS - by Milton Nascimento ... a 1994 release, I don't know much about it as it's missing it's liner notes... But I do know that it has guest performances on it by Peter Gabriel (yes! :) :) :)) and James Taylor, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Jon Anderson, Wayne Shorter, Leonardo Bretas, Robertinho Silva, Nan Vasconcelos, Ron Carter, and Jack Dejohnette... The song with Peter Gabriel is divine, of course.... it's got angels on the disc... it's worldbeaty stuff, but I like it. Will have to give it a better listen soon (i kept getting stuck on the track with PG...) FOLLOW THE GEOGRAPHY - by Not Drowning, Waving - It's a promo cd that has tracks from many of the band's previous releases. I've heard many good things about them, but have yet to purchase anything by them. Well, this cd is glorious.... Will have to get their latest release and track down their harder to find (import only?) older albums... Very nice package. Worldbeat rock folk typestuff. I see why critics have a hard time pinning them down... a wide variety of styles... :) very goodstuff. SABSYLMA - by Zap Mama - heh... This is *so* cool... Vickie just reviewed their show and posted info about the group. I *needed* that as this is a cd lacking liner notes yet again (probably a radio copy)... I bought this 'cuz it was on the Luaka Bop label (and that label rarely disappoints me) and I *really* like it. But you all knew that Vickie said they're cool, so there ya go... :) GEGGY TAH - um, is this self-titled? It's an "Advance-CD" copy (says so on the disc and backcover this time) and is lacking any further liner notes. From Luaka Bop/Warner again... Co-exec produced by David Byrne. Very cool... Got a really good review in Alternative Press or Spin or Rolling Stone or someplace.... Good rock/worldbeat stuff. I keep saying that, but hey... THE MADCAP ADVENTURES OF THE AVOCADO OVERLORD - by The Hatters - um, another 1994 release I know nothing about as it's lacking liner notes. There was a pic of a bunch of guys sitting ina backyard with a guitar and mandolin and stuff on the backcover and the title is cute so I thought why not try it.... Um... I'm listening to it right now and not knowing what i think. Not as cool as the other music I've mentioned. This is more straight rock with a country tinge here and there. Kinda reminds me of the Jayhawks in a vague way. (but the Jayhawks rule.. yet another Minneapolis band... )... does have the occasional neat piano part and mandolin on there, but maybe it's the male vocals that don't grab me... not extraordinary voices, pretty basic. When I'm a sucker for unique voices... or cool harmonies. ach well, that's it for the "cheap cd reviews"... :) Most of these are worth more than the price I paid for 'em... Seek 'em out... :) -- ::: Laurel Krahn ::: lakrahn@inst.augie.edu :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: "there's a ring around the moon, long long time 'til day play me one more tune, please don't go away..." - Greg Brown :::::: GAT d- -p+ c++ l u+ e+ m* s n+(n-) h f+ g+(+++) w+ t+@ r x? ::::::::: ======================================================================== From: lakrahn@inst.augie.edu (laurel) Subject: a great album... Date: Thu, 23 Jun 1994 13:13:47 +22293638 (CDT) I have a great album in my possession that you won't find in your record stores... So I'm gonna tell you about it and where you can get it... :) It's called UNDERSTATED and is by Lojo Russo... Some of you may be familiar with Lojo, she's a member of the band Cats Laughing and the irish trio Gallowglass.... From Minneapolis... I may have rambled about them before (in fact I know I have! :) )... Well... Lojo is an incredible songwriter, great musician (bass, mandolin, guitar), and has one of the most beautiful voices ever. I mean, she does songs by Michelle Shocked and Loreena McKennitt with equal aplomb... To hear her version of "I Would Walk 500 Miles" is a thing of beauty (I'm serious! She opens it with "Stairway to Heaven" riffs, goes into a blues kindof slow version of the first verse and chorus, then into a fun rockout version for the rest of the way... solo or with Gallowglass or Cats... tres gr00by... :) :) :) )... She can sing "Superman's Song".... and hers is the best version of "Gloomy Sunday" I've ever heard.... (available on the first Cats Laughing tape, tho it sounds much better live)... But enough about the cover songs.... Catch her or any of her bands if you get a chance... These days she's mainly solo, playing coffeehouses around Minneapolis... Drop me a note if you want a list of current dates... I was at her album release party at the New Riverside Cafe' in Minneapolis a couple of weeks ago. 'twas a glorious concert with Lojo in fine form and many guest musicians from the album showing up in person to play on the songs from the album... Well, the album features songs written by Lojo... with guest appearances by musicians from bands such as: Boiled in Lead, Cats Laughing, Morrigan, Gallowglass, and other places... the songs themselves range from the very beautiful to the funny... Seriously, if you like Michelle Shocked or Loreena McKinnit, I suspect you'd like this... It's good folk/rock with intelligent lyrics. And fine fine instrumentation... Anyhow, I've rambled enough.... Hopefully sometime in the next month or two, I'll be running a Flash Girls online mailing-list... (and possibly a Neil Gaiman one, too...) I'd also be more than happy to fill you in on what I know about dates/albums/etc from Lojo Russo, Cats Laughing, Gallowglass, Morrigan, Steven Brust, and Boiled in Lead... (lead fans should join the Boiled in Lead mailing list called "leadheads")... But in the mean time, until I get an actual mailing list thingie set up, I can make a list of folks to send info to when I get it... If interested, drop me a note... And if you are saying "just who are these Flash Girls anyway?"... well gee, get their album THE RETURN OF PANSY SMITH AND VIOLET JONES and find out... The Flash Girls are Emma Bull and Lorraine Garland... with occasional accompaniment by Robin "Adnan" Anders, Adam Stemple, Steven Brust, Todd Menton, Drew Miller, and others... They do folk/rock/traditional stuff... with many songs written by Neil Gaiman... and some by Emma and/or Lorraine... Hard to describe them, really. Folks who don't expect to like them, often do. Write to SteelDragon for a catalog (also if you want info on the WAR FOR THE OAKS movie being made right now... or Cats Laughing... or novels by Emma Bull, Will Shetterly, Steven Brust... or the CAPTAIN CONFEDERACY comic book )... or bug me for more info. Currently, the Flash Girls are playing up in Minneapolis at bookstores and such places. But if you know of a venue you'd like them to play, again, drop me email. Lorraine tells me that they've been asked to play at an AIDS benefit in St. Louis at the end of September... details on that will be forthcoming... I've rambled yet again, if you write to SteelDragon tell them I said "hi"... And be patient, they're busy right now filming WAR FOR THE OAKS ( the shoot at First Avenue is this Saturday... I may very well be an extra in addition to helping out where needed... :) ) (BTW, WAR FOR THE OAKS is a wonderful novel by Emma Bull... from Ace books, currently out of print, but worth hunting for. Her latest novel FINDER is out in hardcover right now. It's chock *full* of interesting stuff from all stages of her performing career (including lots of neat material from the 70's). _United States Live_ is taken from a performance she gave in Brooklyn in the early 80's on two successive nights. It's massive, and great for those long drives. I have to get a new copy myself, because my backpack was stolen a couple weeks ago, and my cassette copy of USLive was in it. :P D^2 ======================================================================== Date: 23 Jun 94 16:48:14 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: Into the Black Hole I still haven't received a digest in a long time (read: more than 2 days) and so I continue to submit entries to this phantom list and hope it is not a black hole (well, I know it's not because I've gotten a couple of responses from the last few messages I've sent out). I will note that there seem to be an unusually high number of bounces and barfs these days when I submit a message. I plunked down some significant buckos yesterday for some new CDs (so what's new?). Since I know you are all on the edges of your respective pants, I will gladly oblige by enumerating these purchases for your collective edification and entertainment. (Read: I'm in a *very* good mood but work is *extremely* boring and any excuse to not do any is a good one... :-) Kate Bush: The Red Shoes CD5's Parts One and Two, UK I'm not sure why I bought these but I did. I discussed them on gaffa, and I'm not about to repeat the discussion (and complaining) here, but I will just say the TWW was misspelt (Women's instead of Woman's) and so maybe this really *is* a collector's edition. Kirsty MacColl: Titanic Days CD5 One word describes this gem (and anything else this lady does): Fabulous. This CD5 includes 5 tracks: Titanic Days (Edit) Angel (Piano Mix) Free World (Live) Miss Otis Regrets (Live) Walking Down Madison (Album Version) The Piano Mix of Angel, which oddly enough is absent from the 5 or 6 versions of Angel on the "Angel" CD5 (:-) is in a word BEAUTIFUL and significantly different from the original. Free World and Ms.Otis are also great and different enough to be interesting. I'm still waiting with baited breath from any release of pre-Kite Kirsty, esp. since reports of this have been trickling in. I want I want I want, to paraphrase JS. The art work on the cover, BTW, is also spectacular, imho. Aimee Mann - I Should've Known CD5, UK I have a distinct weakness for anything with Aimee's name on it and I'm still kicking myself because this is one of three CD5s from UK I could have attained but this is the only one I have. It contains: I Should've Known (Edit) 50 Years After the Fair (Demo) Truth on my Side (Demo) Put on Some Speed (Demo) The last 2 never made it onto "Whatever." The version of 50 Years is deemed the "original" version. I really like Speed, Truth is not quite as good, though I've only heard it once so far. 50 Years is definitely different, sparer, rougher, and worth hearing if you're a *big fan*. I Should've Known skips the intro stuff, which makes it valuable because it gets right to the meat of the song. 10000 Maniacs - Candy Everybody Wants (CD5) Contains title track (remix), Everyday is Like Sunday, Sally Ann, and Don't Go Back to Rockville. This is not really new, but very enjoyable. (I think I have more of their CD5s than albums... I only have 1 of their albums.) I never used to like 10000 but I have developed a good taste for them recently. The 1st song of theirs that really caught my attention (as if anybody "gives a care" -- trivia question -- what song is that phrased used in?) is Eat for Two, a brilliant tune. Disappear Fear - Self-titled (1994) Haven't listened to this one yet. Zappa's Universe - A Celebration of 25 years of Frank Zappa's music This stars a wide collection of musical people, including Rockapella. I had been under the impression that it would be like all those other tribute albums (which have become ***way*** too common these days) in which each artist interpretted their fave song. Instead it is an ensemble cast from a 1991 tribute performance. The Rockapella guys are virtually indistinguishable from the rest of them. Albeit, it is still quite good, if you're hip to the Zappa thing. He has so much stuff, and I've only heard the tip of the iceburg. BUT, some of what I believe is his earlier stuff represented on this collection, reminds me distinctly of Maestro Subgum (woj? still waiting...) and the Whole, which I find very interesting. I will have to check out some early Zappa now. Thomas Dolby - Hyperactive! CD5 Part One UK What is the deal with these two-part ripoff CD5s from the UK? And *why* oh *why* do I keep buying the stupid things for 10 and 11 bucks a crack plus tax? I'm out of my mind. This one includes: Hyperactive! (heavy breather subversion) Windpower (12" mix) Dissidents (The Search for Truth Part I) Puppet Theatre The Dolby CD5 I would *really* like to find is the Silk Pyjamas one that is out of print which has Leipzig and the other song missing from my copy of Wireless, his first CD. Sigh. Of course I'd also pay big bazumbas to get The Flat Earth on CD. But I remain hopeful. The songs here are quite good, and I suspect they come from records released 10 years ago. Philo So Far - The 20th Anniversary Folk Sampler This was pretty cheap so I bought. It has lots of the folks mentioned regularly on the folk list, some of which I've never heard. Sorry to chew your ear of here, guys, but it's lonely without ecto. Re: Vickie's Zap Mama post: I have 2 things to say: 1) I would have liked to see them but couldn't. I'm glad someone did. 2) Welcome to the joyous world of a cappella the underground musical genre. If you liked Zap Mama, you should come see Moxy Fruvous on Wed. at Schubas.
