She has been touring lately with her spoken word tour "Songs from the Nerve Bible". This is in support of her book "Song from the Nerve Bible" that I highly recommend for anyone who wants to know more about Laurie & how her mind works. Saw the show in Phila. & Princeton,NJ and really loved the fact that she did a question and answer session at the end. Other than Jane Siberry, she is the only other artist I have ever seen who answers questions at the end of the show. She also said that she will be retouring in the fall in support of the forthcoming album with the kind of full scale multimedia show that has come to be expected at her shows. She also talked about the entertainment park that she is working on with Peter Gabriel and others to be built in Spain. I know she said that they were setting up an Internet address to allow folks to share ideas about what to include in the park. Has anyone heard any word on if this address is up and running? I agree with Revvie that United States is a great choice for introducing anyone to Laurie's music. I still have it on vinyl(5 disks) and it repeatedly ends up on my turntable. Maybe one of these days I'll break down and buy the 4 CD set. I guess Laurie also fits into our discussion of artists that do not fit into the female mold of rock star. During the spoken word parts of her show she always reminds me of a female version of Robert Fripp when he used to do his music lecture tours. With her style of electronically altering her voice, she really removes her gender from the performance and allows you to appreciate her for what she's doing and not what she looks like. I suppose that you could argue that what she does is performance art, but as that art form has been coopted over the years by folks long on agendas and short on talent, I think Laurie has moved more into the same area as the types of artists that we talk about here. *=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=* | Wayne A. Date: Wed, 22 Jun 94 11:12:48 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu That's it. I *NEED* to buy a VCR. Tori was just on a local morning talk show called _Broadcast House Live_. First they talked about her receivng the Vision (?) award from the rape crisis center (she was in town for that a week or two ago). With that, they showed a short taped interview from last week with her talking about not being a victim. Then they came back to the studio and Tori was already seated at a Steinway (I was surprised at that...last time I saw her on a talk show, she had her Boesendorfer with her...). She played one of my Missing Songs from Monday, "Pretty Good Year." Of the live versions I've heard (tv, radio, and in person last March), this was *definitely* the best rendition. Wow. And the camera work was actually sensible! It was just *fabu*! Then, after the song, they did a very brief chat with her, during which they brought out her high school yearbook and showed a picture (or two? I wasn't sure) of her...and noted that she'd been voted "most likely to succeed." It was way cool. As it ended and they went to commercial, Tori was grabbing for the yearbook, exclaiming "Where did you *get* this?!" Oh, and before a commercial appeared, they first showed the phone number for the local rape crisis hotline. All in all, it was a _great_ appearance, and I'm kicking myself for not being able to tape it. Oh -- Sue...it was mentioned that Tori will be at the Meyerhoff next month. Any idea when that is, whether or not it's sold out, and whether or not I should trek to Bal'more for it? I'm undecided if I want to see her three times on the same tour... Jeff |Jeffrey C. The first time I saw them was as an opening act for Squeeze in Cincinnati. Unfortunately, I was a bit distracted at the time and don't have many impressions about that show. However, I saw them in February or March in Dayton at a fairly intimate club and the show was GREAT! They performed the entire show seated, in a relaxed manner, and the crowd was very intent and appreciative. This is understandable as they are a Cincinnati based band and the local crowd was obviously familiar with their material. I'd recommend going to see them and picking up both albums. The first, "'Til We Have Faces," may be difficult to find, but "Patience" was re-released by IRS and should be readily available and it is excellent. By the way, at the Dayton show they claimed to have a new album coming out this summer! Thinking that a change of scenery might do the trick, I went up to Oak Street beach to try to accomplish this mission. _Mirabile dictu_, it worked--through numerous changes of position, the usual ambient visual distractions endemic to such a place, a couple of weird-looking caterpillars that seemed to like to walk on me and my briefcase, and the usual quantity of beach-issue UVB that left me with my first sunburn since at least the close of adolescence, I finally finished the book. What a way to celebrate the beginning of summer :-). WRT Kjetil's query: David Mamet's _Oleanna_ is actually a play about sexual harassment. As best I can recall what was reported in one review, the title is an allusion to a song popular either among Scandinavian immigrants to the U.S. in the early part of this century, or in the old country at the same time, or both; it was some kind of ode to freedom. WRT Kjetil's closing ode to soccer: The trip through the Loop on the way home yesterday was slowed tremendously be the presence of huge numbers of World Cup spectators, long after the game had apparently ended. They can't all be for- eign visitors, so the sport has got to be attracting some kind of following among Americans. WRT to the thread about women artists who may not be drop-dead gorgeous: Alison Moyet was also the first example to come to my mind, though she's nowhere near as heavy as Meat Loaf. Whichever of the Wilson (Heart) sisters keeps getting shoved into the background is far from morbidly obese; I'm not sure why their handlers have a problem with her being more visible. Among those with a more average body weight, Janis Joplin was a fairly big star in her time, despite where she stood by conventional standards of beauty. Then too, as someone already observed, Mariah Carey is very pretty but her music is not all that interesting; nor is that of Wilson Philips, which some would say works both sides of the street when it comes to conventional pulchritude. In a nutshell, it can only be explained away as that Old Devil Double Standard. Speaking of attractive women with interesting music: The KidNews section of yesterday's _Tribune_ carried an interview with Milla. It didn't address the issue of how to alphabetize her, however :-). So I missed the Story on Conan Monday. Like all the rest of us, I had no idea they'd be on. Yesterday, the needs of my growing family of foster cats out in back cheated me out of Crash Test Dummies on Leno, but I did manage to catch Blue Rodeo, who were pretty good, on Conan. Tonight, of course, is Super Wednesday :-), with Iris DeMent on Leno followed by Rebecca Pidgeon on Conan. An afterthought on the beauty thing: When Sheryl Crow appeared on Leno recent- ly, her hair was neither red nor particularly big. She looked essentially like on her album cover, where I've always found her reasonably attractive. And neither Rickie Lee Jones (whom Sheryl Crow sounds a lot like) nor Laurie Anderson is that much of a hardbody, but they've each achieved a modicum of professional success anyway. Too bad the song title "Excellent Birds" is already spoken for. It would be ideal for a song lampooning this whole issue :-). I met Mike at the last WXPN member focus group and he was very receptive to the ideas that we all had. I will say though that some of the ideas that he came up with, like a 'XPN 900 number for single listeners to talk to each other, made it seem like he was starting to lose touch with exactly what the audience of WXPN was all about. Hell, I haven't even heard Happy on there for a while. Maybe it was time for him to move on and let someone else like Kim take over the PD post and see if she can get the station focused again. It just seems IMO that they have lately been trying to please too many people and in the process have lost sight of what drew a lot of folks to support the station over the years. This was the general impression I got from the 30 or so people at the focus group. We all loved the station and the music, but the consensus was that they were starting to try to attract a wider audience by playing some of the stuff that you could hear on all the area commercial stations at the expense of losing their long time listeners who have been members over many years. *=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=* | Wayne A. Especially in the ivy shot on the cover of that wretched book _The Secret History of Kate Bush and the Strange Art of Pop_ by horribly ucky Fred Vermorel. >For the fanatical grammaticists, I intentionally place periods OUTSIDE ending >quotations, because I think of the punctuation structure in a more >mathematical abstract. Is language inherently mathematical? >Therefore, a period, or any other end of sentence >punctuation, should affect the entire sentence, not the parenthetical. Quotations are not parenthetical. Typically, the only reason I'll punctuate outside a quoted passage is when the passage in question is a command in which a period might be misleading (e.g. "Please type, 'cp ../mc* .'. This will copy the required files to the current directory.")
