Yep, it's time for another retrospective into Ecto's recent past. Sarah Noelle Pratt Ferguson (more affectionately named "Sea nymph") mentions: "(Legendary Pink Dots has a Clockwork Orange feel)" I'm not sure I know what you mean by that. "Beautiful, but frightening"? Anyway. I am still rather disappointed I didn't get to see them in concert in Oslo this May. They changed the date and I didn't notice :-( Thanks to Jeffy for the GOOD NEWS (tm) about NEW NENEH CHERRY! I guess Yossou N'Dour just went to the top of my shopping list. Meredith Tarr (wow -- it looks so unfamiliar now when I spell it out) claims that "Go Van Gogh" and "Gogh van Go" are pronounced the same. I must point out that such a thing could only happen in the USA :-) The pronunciation should be "go fan xox" and "xox fan go" (the "x" being the guttural sound in Scottish "loch") respectively. Sorry, for nit- picking, but it is in my genes -- Norwegians are pretty concerned with pronouncing foreign names correctly. You should have seen all the discussion on how to pronounce "Seoul" back in 1992... I'm very glad to hear that Meth knows better than the average commentator when it comes to _my_ name, though :-) :-) WRT "Wrong Century": Is it only me that am reminded of Einar (in the Sugarcubes) by Mitch' vocals? I think they are _perfect_. Those of you who don't like WC so much, how do you feel about Einar (and for that matter Fred in the B-52's)? Now Billy MacKenzie (whom was suggested by Anthony) I have never liked. He has this smooth Barry Manilow feel to him. I wish Dieter would rather do the vocals himself... Eddi Reader had a colour photo and small interview in today's Verdens Gang, as she was stopping by Norway to promote her new eponymous album. The journalist seemed pretty positive, although it wasn't reviewed. Mitch mentions a play called "Oleanna". "Oleanna" was the name of a territory bought and set up by the Norwegian violinist and composer Ole Bull in the 19th century. Is there any relation? Belated Happy Father's Day! We celebrate that in February I think. What's the tradition in other places? Kjetil T. PS. I am _not_ a football fanatic, but "Go! USA", "Go! Sweden", "Go! Germany", "Go! Netherlands", "Go! Russia", "Go! Greece" and "Go! Norway!" (hope I didn't miss out any ectophilic countries now... any Irish here?) Sorry that I couldn't include you, UK -- nah, not really :-) ======================================================================== From: jzitt@ssnet.com (Joseph Zitt) Subject: Re: new sarah news from nettwerk Date: Mon, 20 Jun 1994 21:43:18 -0400 (EDT) Anthony horangues: > An Australian band called Cold Chisel, usually quite a loud pub-rock band, > released a song back in the early 80's called "Flame Trees" (just covered, by > the way, by the wonderful and femalevocalising Killjoys); when this song came > out as a single, they censored the word "bullshit" in it despite the fact > that even then radio was quite willing to play it uncut. I'm surprised, too, by the reaction to Mitch's vocals on the chorus, especially since the general reaction to Trent Reznor's vocal on Tori's "Past the Mission" seems favorable. When I heard "Past the Mission", it immediately reminded me of the "Wrong Century" chorus. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 20 Jun 1994 22:58:57 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: glenn gould Hi! Just got home from seeing _Thirty-two Short Films About Glenn Gould_, a Canadian production about which the title pretty much says it all. The short films are actually individual scenes made by the same people and strung together to make sort of a cohesive whole -- I had thought that it would be a collection of 32 short films about Glenn Gould done by 32 different people, but I don't ink there are that many short films about him in existence, come to think of it... Anyway, it's an excellent movie. I knew nothing about Gould save that he was a pianist, that his recording of a Bach prelude was selected to go into space on Voyager, and that he died young and very eccentric in 1982. That was it. Fortunately, I went with someone who grew up with his music and wept openly on the day of his death, so I was able to get some fill-in background, though really none was needed. The film is self-explanatory. I found myself as I watched it wondering if Tori has seen it, and if so, what her reaction would be -- his idea of piano playing as being a religious "ecstatic" experience seems like something that would (pardon the expression) strike a chord with Tori, who said that she really really really liked _The Piano_. A lot of the short films were taken directly from Gould's writis, the (for me) most notable of which was an interview with himself during which he explains why he decided at the age of 32 to stop performing in concerts and focus on making recordings for the rest of his life. I'm going to borrow the collection of his writings which contains this interview from my friend, so I can look at it more closely: his rationale for not playing in front of a live audience struck me as the perfect rationale for why Kate Bush hasn't toured in 15 years. If I manage to get hold of the book, maybe I'll quote the salient parts here -- I can't remember the exact words, but it pretty much hit it on the head, I think .... Another random Tori/piano thought, before I lay me down to sleep: Anybody seen the "Cornflake Girl"eo? Anybody else think the bit at the end where she's playing herself as a piano during the little bit of the solo that was salvaged in the radio b/u/t/c/h/e/r/y edit is just *too* cool? Isn't that just perfect? Tori's said that she only feels whole at the piano, that the instrument is an extension of herself and vice-versa -- it's a beautiful image, and she really seems to be into it, too. Off to dream, perchance of sheep... Meredith meth@delphi.com ======================================================================== From: "Ralph A. Pincus" Subject: Seeking opinions... Date: Mon, 20 Jun 1994 23:31:09 -0400 (EDT) Hey. Josh here again (hoping not to embarrass myself TOO badly this time). I was recently involved in a conversation which spawned an interesting (to me, anyway) question about the music industry, so I thought I'd pose it to the gang and see what happens. General topic: Gender (sex?), Physical Beauty, and the State of Pop Music. Here goes... I was telling a friend that I was encouraged by the fact that these days it seems you don't have to LOOK like a rock star in order to "make it" in popular music. Y'see, I'm a musician with latent rock star aspirations, but I look more like a math teacher than a rippin' guitar stud. But more and more it seems that you can look like a bit of a dork and still make it. My favorite example is the bass player from R.E.M. Similarly, the Gin Blossoms look like a bunch of regular Joes. There are lots more examples, but these two should suffice. Anyway, when I made this observation, my friend said, "Well, that may be true for male artists, but unfortunately the same doesn't go for women." When I thought about it a little more, I realized that I could come up with TONS of dorky lookin' guys (Elvis Costello, etc.) but very few dorky lookin' women. (Of course, physical attractiveness is purely subjective, but I hope you know what I'm driving at.) As much as I don't WANT it to be true, I think my friend's observation is pretty accurate. As I've talked to other folks about it, I've gotten a very mixed bag of reactions. I'd be interested to know what y'all think. Just askin'... --Josh raps@uhura.cc.rochester.edu P.S. I'd hate to think that we're missing out on a whole generation of would-be Toris, Sarahs, and Happys just cuz they don't have the right "looks." One more reason to seek out and support independent artists, methinks. :) ======================================================================== Subject: ahhh Date: Mon, 20 Jun 94 23:38:32 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Just back from the Tori show. Oooh, ahhhh. A *far* cry from her show in March. I'm not sure how much of it being better was because she actually _was_ better tonight and how much of it was just subjective since I hadn't seen Sarah just a week ago...I still think that Sarah outperforms Tori by a long shot). The set list was good but not superb. We got, as near as I can remember (as usual, I've spaced on the order): Space Dog (with a weird extra intro verse) Leather The Waitress China God Cornflake Girl Bells for Her (worth the price of the ticket!!!) Icicle (much shorter story, slightly different, but still fixating on Robert Plant) Silent All These Years Crucify Precious Things Me and a Gun Happy Phantom The Day the Music Died/Smells Like Teen Spirit a B-side which I thought I recognized, but I don't think I own...it was rather great, and included a line in the chorus about Thomas Jefferson--someone want to identify it for me? The audience was surprisingly low key, though there was some noise at... um...inopportune times. I mean, come on, people, grow up! We don't need your titters and cheers when Tori has the audacity to say "cum." You'd think they'd get that out of their system after listening to _Little Earthquakes_ 3 or 4 times. And, as usual, I'm sick of people who like a song *so much* that they have to cheer and rant and rave loudly...but not until _after_ the instrumental intro, when the performer starts singing. If you like the song so much, why don't you recognize it WHEN IT STARTS?! Bill Miller was good once again, though I must admit I was a bit put off during "Reservation Road" when he added something like, "Spending the summer with Tori Amos...on the reservation road." It seemed somehow to be belittling the serious subject of the song, and it seemed inappropriate. I know, I know, I'm being critical. Disappointments: there was no PGY, Baker Baker, Past the Mission, Mother, Upside Down, Yes Anastasia, Landslide, and a few others. But those are quibbles. It was a fantabulous show! The studio version is pretty great, but the live > version, just completely freaks out my whole system and leaves me a > shivering wreck, completely exhausted, emotionally drained. Ok, hold on...I *love* the live version of "The Issue Is" and in the studio version, I love the vocals and lyrics. It's just that ugly (to me) "farty" synth sound that bugs me. I couldn't listen to it at *all* until Happy explained how that song came about, at which point I was able to soften my stance long enough to really listen to it. The background, the lyrics, the vocals...all are very powerful indeed. Really, we are in perfect agreement here, Jeff. What else do I "dislike"? Happy has 6 studio albums, and a compilation with other things, not to mention the live work she's done, yet I can name on one hand the songs that have things *within* them that bother me. Even so, there's not one song that Happy's done that I can say "I *hate* that song, everything about it" because there are none. In some circles that would peg me as a "Happy can do no wrong" fan :) "Wrong Century" (dislike background/duet vocals) (but I like the verses and the lyrics, and Happy's vocals) "The Issue Is" (dislike the main synth sound) (but I love the lyrics and vocals) "Box H.A.P." (dislike the main synth sound) (but I love the lyrics and vocals) "Oh The Drears" (dislike the live version, the arrangement) (the studio version is one of my favorite Happy songs, and I didn't care for the changes. However, I *loved* the reaction of the crowd in Philly. I was quite suprised to find that this is the song that *really* got the crowd going and so obviously, my reaction was in the minority. Except for the Ectophiles present, the Philly crowd was completely unfamiliar with Happy's older catalog. This song is the first "old" one that hit a major chord with them. That was cool.) (ooh, I'll get a lot of "you're insane!"s with that one) :) Ok, ok, two hands... "Murder" and "To Live In Your World" don't *annoy* me, but they don't do anything for me either. I like the lyrics and vocals to both songs, but if they disappeared from the albums, I just wouldn't miss them. Well, maybe I would miss them, but we'll never know, will we? :) They don't bother me enough to program them out when I listen to _Warpaint_. Neither does "Wrong Century". Actually, I've *never* programmed out a song of Happy's, so my feelings aren't all that strong. There are so so so so so So SO SO many Happy songs that I really, really love, that nitpicks here and there aren't very important. > Jeff > (who notes that his vickie-bestowed nickname was generated directly from > "Wrong Century") ??? (refresh my memory) I deleted Kjetil's post too quickly, but he hit it pretty much on the head. I *don't* care for Einer, and probably would be critical of any male vocalist (except for Peter Gabriel) who sings with Happy. There is an INDEX file explaining what is where. Feel free to send me things you'd like to have added. -- jessica (jessica@ns1.rutgers.edu)
