I liked her new one on first listen, especially "Possession" (track 1) and the title track. The lyrics "piece in the struggle to find peace/comfort on the way to comfort" are so beautiful they make me cry. I guess I'm easily impressed by something recursive. * Loreena McKennitt: _the mask and mirror_ This was a difficult one. I loved it on first listen, but then it kind of started to sound boring, but I kept listening to it, and now I think it's my favourite Loreena album. I like it so much that her other discs kind of faded in comparison, but I hope this situation will stabilise over time. Seeing her perform the whole album live in Utrecht was an amazing experience. * October Project: I actually bought this one before all the discussion about it on Ecto started, because the album was made available for listening in the CD store. The cover looked interesting, and when I put on the headphones to listen to it, I just knew I had to buy this one. I haven't been disappointed. BTW, the cover for the single "Bury My Lovely" shows the same picture as the album cover. Maybe this will help people who are looking for an interpretation of this song. * Nine Inch Nails: _The Downward Spiral_ Someone mentioned that this one wasn't suited for suicidal people, so I just had to buy it. I kind of like the sound of most of the songs, and the lyrics help me to pin down the thoughts one has to avoid in life. * Milla: _The Divine Comedy_ I was rather surprised to see a group called The Divine Comedy perform as the support act for Tori Amos, just three days after buying this album. They consisted of a male singer, a keyboard player and a violinist. I kind of liked their humorous songs, but the best part of their performance was the cover of "Wuthering Heights". Try to imagine that song being sung by a male doing octave jumps to compensate for the limited range... :-) Tori Amos wasn't too bad either, but I liked her performance in 1992 in Amsterdam better. I love the Milla disc. I think it's even better than what one might conclude after reading all the reviews of it here on Ecto. * Peter Gabriel: _Lovetown_ This is his new single from the _Philadelphia_ soundtrack. It has this "Digging in the Dirt" sound, and his voice sounds wonderful. The lyrics of the first verse are *brilliant*. I'm a besotted Iris DeMent fan :) (Aside...I didn't find this out until *after* the fact, but the night that Geoff threw his EctoParty in Cambridge, Iris played a show *in Cambridge*! If I'd known about it, I would have dragged *all* the Ectophiles to see her, kicking and screaming or not :-). It would've been *wonderful*, and it would've freaked Iris out, considering that I'd interviewed her in Chicago a few months earlier. I would've introduced you all to her!) > LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIEN, 12:35 A.M. EST, NBC > 6/22 Rebecca Pidgeon *Interesting*!! While Iris is hardly Ectofodder, Rebecca certainly is, (was, anyway) so I'd highly recommend marking this one *important*. Rebecca used to sing lead for a wonderful group called Ruby Blue, which both woj and Jeffy will tell you all about :) I'd had a Ruby Blue album (ah, LP) since 1987 called "Glances Askances" and had never seen a CD of theirs until we went to London in May. In HMV, they were the first CDs I saw after seeing Happy's CDs, and I immediately did a little dance and snatched those suckers right up :). I got 2, but that's all they had, or else I would have gotten more. I was disappointed that they didn't have Glances, but... One was called "Down From Above" which Jeffy wrote about last year. (Strangely, I actually found the review the other day Jeff. It was in Digest 409, 2/93). The other was called "Almost Naked" and it wasn't until I got home that I opened it up and read the liner notes, at which point I found out that Rebecca Pidgeon was no longer the lead singer for Ruby Blue :( (a role taken over by Erika Woods) and I wondered what happened to Rebecca. Now I know!! She's still around...Yay! :) Actually, I didn't realize that Rebecca had left the group until I listened to the CDs. I listened to DFA first (sublime!) and then AN, and got a rude shock. I thought it was a completely *different* group, just using that name, until I read the liner notes of the LP and both CDs. The 2 main people in the first Ruby Blue were Rebecca and a fella named Roger Fife. He's still part of the "new" Ruby Blue, so I guess he owned the name. Fife and Erika Wood's Ruby Blue aren't bad, I liked it, but it was just very different from Fife and Rebecca's RB. Rebecca's voice is so nice, with a definite Celtic lilt, though the RB music isn't really Celtic, and I'm very curious about her solo career, what style she's singing. If anyone sees anything about a Rebecca Pidgeon album, please post the information. Iris, Rebecca, Indigo Girls...this is great! Fooey on the hosts of these shows, they matter not. All that matters is that they provide occasional good live music. Keep 'em on the air as long as possible :) Oh yeah, Sarah on Conan July 13 too. Good, 'cos I missed her on Letterman :( (set the VCR and it didn't record) Wrt Blue Rodeo...someone speak to me. Why is this familar? Do they have a female vocalist? I wasn't looking for anything in particular, I was just being kid nosey, seeing what I could see in places where I couldn't *normally* see. No. Without meaning to sound casual toward your theory, I can safely say that there's a lot more to my depression than this. I have a sad and sordid history of sexual abuse/molestation, rape and incest, so I've had to put up with more than a couple of muggy thugs. Off and on through the years, I've gone through bad depression spells and I've tried to commit suicide a few times. Luckily, (for Ectophiles :)) I'm really bad at it. Also, the last time I was really serious about it (to the extent that I ended up in a mental hospital), it was years before this mugging took place. I would never say that no one should *ever* own guns, I just know that death is easy with guns, and there are been so many times when I really wanted that handgun back. If I'd had it, I would have used it. "Guns don't kill suicides, suicides kill suicides" (to paraphrase) but access to a gun makes it too too easy and quick for a depressive suicidal person to check out. I guess I'm saying that, at certain times and in certain moods, a handgun in *this* household *for protection* would have been the end of me. I'm not up to arguing on anyone else's behalf, but I feel deeply empathetic toward those who have taken advantage of easy access to a gun in their quest to end their pain. :-( Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Sat, 18 Jun 94 21:13:04 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: About Milla This is the result of a short thread in rdt. The second leg of the Fumbling... tour proved to be a great success. The show was reworked, with the most notable changes being to the lighting (which garnered its own rave reviews) and the addition of "Ice", "Ice Cream", and "Fear" to the set. The focus for the past tour was primarily the U.S. where she played smaller venues (average size: 1200 seats). In customary Sarah-fashion, the shows sold out quickly and were met with enthusiastic responses. The tour wasn't all touring, however. Sarah and her band filmed a video for Pay Per View in Montreal and Morin Heights at Studio Nomade. It features live footage of the Montreal concert, a "behind the scenes" interview with both Sarah and Pierre Marchand, and footage of an "unplugged" session in the studio. It was broadcast in Canada on April 29th. The entire broadcast will be released on video by Nettwerk in the fall, and the "unplugged" session will also eventually be released as an EP. Although Sarah had a chance to relax during her break in touring, she also filmed a video for "Good Enough". It will be released with the single in July. The single will feature the album mix, a re-mix, an "unplugged" version and a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Blue". For those of you who are anxiously awaiting a Sarah video compilation and a songbook, we have good news for you! Sarah's been at work compiling both of these. The songbook will contain all the songs from Fumbling..., "Vox", and "Ben's Song" from Touch, and "Lost", "Path of Thorns (Terms)", "I Will Not Forget You", and "Drawn to the Rhythm" from Solace. Look for it in all North American music stores by the end of August. It will be released in the fall. After Sarah finishes her North American tour in September, she will be heading to Europe where Fumbling... will just be newly released. I usually end up listening to Hearts of Space because it's on right after Echoes and at 10:00 on a Sunday night I'm too lazy to do anything else. I'll definitely be listening now, to see if I hear either Lanterna or Happy! One night in the recent past he did an all Dead Can Dance show... it would be sublime if he did an all Happy show, wouldn't it? Jeff Wasilko mentioned: >I heard tonight that Hole's bassist died of a heroin overdose today.... Is this true? Gods. Which one is (was?) the bassist? I read an interview with Hole in CREEM a few months ago (the one when they were on the cover), that was actually rather amusing, though it did *not* paint a pretty picture of Courtney Love at all... If the bassist has died of a heroin overdose, that's really sad. Courtney seems to have quite an effect on people, doesn't she? Neal noted: >I think this may be the end of the tour, but I'd certainly recommend >seeing them if they pop up in your town. Anyone have any comments >on the new album? I found out the next morning that the Pretenders had played in the vicinity the night before, and had I know about it in time, I definitely would have been there! I've been a big Pretenders fan since _Learning To Crawl_ came out, and have always wanted to see them live. Drat. As for the new album, I've listened to it a few times, and while it's much better than anything they've done since _Learning To Crawl_, it hasn't grabbed me. I don't know yet if I'm going to get rid of it when I move ... still have to listen a bit more and see if it grows on me. > haaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaa >baaaaaaaaa - baaaaaaaaaa- :) I don't know why this made me laugh so hard, but it did. In fact, I've saved it in a file. Thanks. :) Vickie proffered: >(Aside...I didn't find this out until *after* the fact, but the night >that Geoff threw his EctoParty in Cambridge, Iris played a show *in >Cambridge*! If I'd known about it, I would have dragged *all* the >Ectophiles to see her, kicking and screaming or not :-). :( :( :( I would've been glad to go. But we still had a good time at Geoff's! >Rebecca used to sing lead for a wonderful group called Ruby Blue, which >both woj and Jeffy will tell you all about :) Hmmm... I'll have to ask woj to tell me, then. Your description sounded interesting! (Shhh... don't tell woj... but I just want him for his music collection. ;>) >Wrt Blue Rodeo...someone speak to me. Why is this familar? Do they >have a female vocalist? They're Canadian. Not sure if they have a female vocalist, but this might speak to you anyway: From the up-until-this-afternoon-most-recent Sarah McLachlan Newsletter, courtesy of Nettwerk: ============ Sarah has also been busy with other projects as well. She appears on Stephen Fearing's new album "The Assassin's Apprentice" and on the Blue Rodeo album "Five Days In July". On "Five Days In July", she sings back up on four songs and plays the piano in one. Sarah appeared on stage in Vancouver when Blue Rodeo was on tour. It was quite something to see Sarah up there wailing away with them and it really sounded quite beautiful. ============ I've been meaning to seek out this album, but haven't gotten around to it. I'll definitely watch them when they're on TV, though! >Is anyone else in Chicago going to this? Zap Mama are an amazing >group of women from Paris(?) who sing wonderful acapella weirdness. >(I can't do much better than that...they're *very* hard to describe, >and I can't find any of the reviews/raves I thought I'd saved) They're based in Brussels, actually. I'm blanking on which Central African nation the sort-of-leader-of-the-group is from. I read somewhere that she grew up in or near a Pygmy village, and her vocal style was very much influenced by the singing of the Pygmies. These women are truly amazing -- I saw them open for 10,000 Maniacs twice last year, and was blown away both times. I haven't had a chance to pick up their new album yet, however. chrisF wondered: >is it just rampant bad mixing in the business, my bad ears / skewed musical >preferences, or what???? do any of the more experienced concert goers or >electronic genii have an explanation for this?? It's bad mixing. Though I must say that this hasn't been a problem in any of the shows I've been to in a very long time ... Sarah McLachlan has had mixing problems, but the problem is usually with too much bass, not with the vocals. When I saw the Cranberries Dolores was a bit behind the mix at times, but it worked, so I didn't care. And if Tori's voice ever gets lost behind the piano, you know you have a problem! :> I was going through the latest BMG Classical Club catalog today, ferreting out the early music selections, when I saw a page featuring the Stereo Review Albums Of The Year. There, amongst over 20 classical selections with no explanation as to what it was doing listed there, was PJ Harvey's _Rid Of Me_. Tres bizarres. Then I turned the page to the non-Classical selections, and found Sarah's FtE and Kristin Hersh's _Hips And Makers_ under the Pop/Rock category. Even weirder! But not as weird as this letter in the current issue of B-side magazine (which features good articles on Sarah McLachlan and Kristin Hersh): ============ Dear Sandra & Sandra, [the editors -me] [irrelevant stuff deleted] Regarding your comment on German pop (Feb./Mar. issue), I offer the Rainbirds. Has anyone heard of these guys? I would love some information. Their '87 US debut was only one of the catchiest, sweetest, toughest, brightest, darkest, poppin', rockin' albums ever- look for it, everyone (although pretty sure it's out of print). Their '89 follow-up was a little uneven: still a great band, and a great female singer (Katharina Franck). Have they released anything since then? Yours most sincerely, Phineas Feinberg Jamaica Plain, MA ============ Guess who's writing a letter to B-Side this evening? :) They didn't print his street address, or I would just write to him directly. Who knows, maybe they'll actually print the reply ... Here's a funny bit from the June 13 issue of the New Yorker about Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories, on the schedule at Wetlands on June 8: ============ LISA LOEB & NINE STORIES are here on June 8. Twenty-six-year-old Loeb is the pouty, fey-voiced slacker babe of the moment. In her single "Stay", from the "Reality Bites" soundtrack, she roams through what looks like an artist's loft in SoHo, in a little black dress and big, clunky spectacles, whining about some guy who can't *communicate* with her. Juliana Hatfield, meet your competition. ============ But I wonder, is Lisa Loeb still a virgin? :) Meltingly yours, Meredith meth@delphi.com ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
