Does anyone know which album (if any) the original I Scare Myself (covered by TD) by Dan Hicks is on? I assume this is Dan Hicks of Hot Licks fame. I am starting to like the Frente! album a whole lot. In particular is sounds superb in my car (and not all albums do). ObQuestion: what is the song Cuscutlan about? That is currently my favorite song (for those at home keeping score) on Marvin. Finally, I take back whatever I said about Sam Phillips' Martinis and Bikinis not being as good as Cruel Inventions. In fact, it is as good (I'd almost say better but that's because it's fresher for me now and I still want to hear it every time I walk into my car). A formidable talent for hooks and harmonies and ironies. Highly recommended. Oh, and as for Kristen Hersh... Hips and Makers is certainly interesting. It has a really nice edge that, in my mind, is very Throwing Musish, though certainly not as rockin' (not nec. a bad thing). In fact, KH seems to have successfully distilled out the exact elements that make her an innovative writer and performer on this CD... it is cool to hear the essence of her angle on music. At first I was a bit thrown off -- this does require lots of listens, I am learning, because it is not particularly (for me) sweet, pretty or easy to listen to... but I am getting used to it and *liking* it. To the best of my impromptu recollection, it was on their eponymous album on Epic, the one that starts with "Canned Music" (my coda on last year's HBP) and follows that with "How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away." WRT Valerie's query on whether Happy may be related to Cecil Rhodes, I doubt it; but thereby hangs (if I remember correctly) a tale unto itself. I seem to recall the interview with Happy back in 1991, for which members of this list at the time submitted questions, revealing that her original first name, Kimberly, was inspired by the Kimberly Diamond Mines (or some other sort of mine) in Rhodesia, which was founded by Cecil and ultimately changed it name to Zimbabwe. I have no idea why her parents would have an affinity for this particular mine. I told her all about Ecto, where I first heard about her (though I forget who recommended her album.. anyone care to step forward?). Emily's on the net, so she may become a subscriber fairly soon. Hi Folks, Ilka, Gentle Giant were doing that drumsticks-on-the-guitar item back in the seventies! They really were an amazing band; they did a lot of instrument tradeoffs. At one point all five of them, including the drummer, would be playing acoustic guitars! Nice to see Melissa's band continuing the drumsticks segment! Anthony, I'm glad I said Most critics when I mentioned that silly Tori review. It seems that so many critics are taking cheap shots at artists we Ectofolk hold dear. Sometimes I get the feeling that many critics do not like music. I'm glad you are not among them! I saw Renaissance in New York City several years ago. They put on a wonderful show. Don't let anyone tell you Jon Camp was an underrated bassist! We were all awed by his speed and technique; the more jealous bassists accused him of overplaying, but whatever he did sure worked for me! They had a great sound. This was back around Scheherazade, I think. Oddly, I have not subscribed to Rhodeways. I know I was the big cheerleader here, so it looks like it's about time to put my money where my mouth was! Glad to hear there'll be lots of acoustic guitar on BTC. Lots of great locations mentioned for a possible video; I just hope she can do one this time. Seems the biggest problem has been distribution. There are lots of folks willing to donate their services to actually make a video for Happy, but the problem seems to be getting it picked up by VH1 or whatever. Therein lies the rub.
