Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1993 9:37:35 -0700 (PDT) Hi All ! Here's a couple of issues I thought I'd throw into the fray.... OK so we've all been discussing what local radio stations are likely to play the hapsters music and that's great, but what about settings our sights further afield ? I for one would like to hear the opinions of others re: the likely reception HR would receive on mainstream British radio. OK you Brit (and Brit-familiar) ectophiles, who do you think is most likely to like/play the Hapster on NATIONAL (that's right folks) radio. Seems to me (but then again, what the hell do I know :) that British market is a good return on investment and a great back-door into other places. Alright, so it may be a lame idea, but it's been buzzing around in the back of my head and after all, isn't this what mailing lists are all about ? Lurkedom beckons and I must go ! The reverse of the cover sheet was annotated with the single sentiment "TO MITCH--HAPPY RHODES," attesting once more to my generalized inscrutability :-). (And you thought Lovejoy was far gone that way of late :-). ) Actually, if scanned at face value, Happy's handwriting comes out more like "To Mitch-- Aoqpy Rhodes," making it arguably the best encryption algorithm I've seen used on the back of a CD insert this week :-). But I digress; as Al Smith said on the campaign trail back in 1928, let's look at the record. The original "Feed the Fire" and "I Say" are, of course, old friends to us all. It's the new acoustic stuff that makes the thing worth shelling out for. They are all well done, evocative of her early acoustic work on the 1st2. It's es- pecially interesting to be able to compare the acoustic "Feed the Fire" with the original on one disk. IMHO WIVH she ought to consider doing some acoustic tracks (other than covers of herself) on her next full-dress album. In other news: Over the weekend I came across the May '93 issue of a British mag called _Deadline_, which has features on Madder Rose, who was mentioned in these pages in passing not long ago; Kim Deal of the Pixies and Breeders; and Courtney Love of Hole. It also comes with a free cassette sampler, which I haven't played but which includes a track by Miranda Sex Garden, among other things. Last night's episode of _World News Now_ did parts of the weather and sports to the accompaniment of Sinead O'Connor's and kd lang's tracks on the _Red Hot and Blue_ compilation, and Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight." Can't win 'em all, I guess :-). Mitch ======================================================================== Date: 29 Jun 93 13:59:12 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: non-ecto music ?? (Neil, Bruce) Two performances of note recently... hope this doesn't offend anyone's sensibilities, but: The final David Letterman Show (now this really does mark the end of an era, even though he'll be rematerializing on CBS at 11:30 Aug. 30) (much more an era ender than Cheers and without anywhere near the hoopla -- wonder why? (not)) featured a surprise appearence by The Boss himself, who played a bang up knock down version of Glory Days with the world's most dangerous band, who, contrary to opinions I've read hear before, I really do think are pretty great. Anyways, it was great to see Bruce and, well, I'll really miss Late Night (since it won't be on as Late anymore, it means I'll have to readjust my life, which I really hate doing...). Ah well, I just had to mention that. Last night, Neil Young's WTTW/VH-1 Center Stage (or whatever its called) was on Channel 11 (PBS). It was Neil solo with an organ, a harp, and some 6-strings. I had heard when this show was taped that it was fantastic and I'd have to agree. It'll be on again (in Chicago, at least) this Fri. (July 2) at 11pm for those who missed it. I'm a long-time Neil Young fanatic, though I've lost track of his last few records. As a result, there were some songs he played I'd never heard before. What I'd really like to see is a listing of the songs he played, and which albums they're all from. Does anyone know what he'd released, say, in the last 5 years. Did anyone else see this? Were some of those songs from Harvest Moon? One of them sounded like a sequel to Old Man. Is that possible? Does anyone here care? You could send me email if you know about this so as not to bog down ecto with non-ecto artists (if there is such a thing...). Anyways, I was most surprised and pleasantly so by his voice. I'd heard that NY's voice was shot to hell, but man, it sounded as good as it ever has to me. Has anyone checked out Pete Townshend's new one? Is anyone else going to see him? He is still up there in my pantheon as one of the greatest songwriters in the rock era. Hands down. Top 3 easily. And he plays a decent guitar too. :-) Has anyone seen the Broadway Tommy? -mjm ======================================================================== Date: 29 Jun 1993 13:29:01 -0600 From: "Julianne Dunphy" Subject: Hi y'all Hi y'all this is just a quickie to say that anyone who loves Kate and doesn't read gaffa better check Vickie's latest (I think) post about the ONE. Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1993 12:33:06 +1000 (EST) Hi people, It's official ... I'm off to Holland for a year starting this September!!! It's a bit strange waiting until July (almost) to tell me I have to leave the country in August, but I'm not complaining about the result :) :) Now, this means that I may be able to stopover at a few places in North America on the way over (normally they expect us to go via Asia, but I should be able to go the long way), and would like some helpful advice on where would be the best places, assuming a very limiting number of available stops (2 or 3 if I'm lucky, I'd say, depending on how much I'm prepared to spend of course :) ). I'd really like to meet as many Ectophiles as I can, as I may not get very many opportunities to repeat the feat ... Chicago should be a fairly arrangeable one (Hi Vickie, Mitch ...), I hope I can fit in Philadelphia (Hi Bob, maybe I can bring a bit of _rock_ to town ;) ), but I don't really know where that is exactly. I don't know about Canada - it could be difficult ... where exactly are you, Andrea ... ? Any more ideas are more than welcome. I'll have to make some concrete plans fairly soon ... I'm going to Holland on a Dutch Government study scholarship to study there for a year. I'll be studying Dutch (language, history etc), a course designed for foreign students, at the University of Leiden, which is great because Perttu will be in Leiden this year too!!!! I can meet another ectophile there! As part of the scholarship they pay my return air fare (to make sure I go I suppose :) ), which makes it a bit complicated when I want to go doing the things I want to do. It shouldn't really be a problem, however, it should just be a matter of me paying a little bit more, which ain't a problem. Anyway, I just wanted to share a little of my euphoria with you :) and I hope that these hopes of meeting some of you guys will be realised ... However, we will be having a little Ecto-gathering in Atlanta at Valerie Nozick's. Besides Valerie and me, there will be Kiri and Courtney, who at last report are bailing out of some less-than-exciting 4th of July plans to go to Atlanta instead. I sent off for HR^5 today. I'll be very interested to see it. I'm coming to you in total eyestrain-o-vision courtesy of my new VGA card, which does 1024x768. This xterm is 80x25 characters and they are REALLY tiny.
