I thought that some of the way cool parts of Gabriel's concert were evident before it even started. I believe that the first song that the sound man played after the opening act was Kate's Sensual World, and the 2nd was one of K.D. Lang's new songs. I also really liked the third song, but I hadn't heard it before, and don't know who did it. Did anyone catch it? The shifting economics of the club industry have caused many of them to switch from live music to disk jockeys, thereby reducing the number of creative out- lets for local musicians. The article ultimately raises the question, "Will professional musicians be able to continue to make a living without 'making it to the big time'--a very relevant consideration for many of the artists we on ecto are into. All I do there is lurk. Now there is Ecto. I step forward and introduce myself, having been urged to do so. Paula Shanks. A Brief Historical Outline. Born in Boulder 25 February 1952. Raised in the Detroit area, which influences my musical tastes greatly--not a Motown fan so much as generally into r&b and soul of the 50s thru 70s. Studied Chinese and library science. Ultimately went to work for the bibliographic journal, Mathematical Reviews, where I frittered away my post-formative years as a copy editor. Now I am the acquisitions librarian there, and in the course of my work have been fiddling around the Internet, which brought me to you almost simultaneously with my recent Happy Introduction. She Discovers Happy Rhodes. Her Life Changes. One morning in April on the way to work I was roped in by "Play the game" on our local too-hip-for-FM AM station. Had to find out who that voice belonged to! Unfortunately, I managed to catch only the album title, which was no help at the record store. Finally heard "Save our souls" on Detroit public radio just last week and recognized the voice. This time a name was attached. Since then I have been losing a lot of sleep as catchy little Happy-hooks surface in my brain at the least sign of consciousness. {I hope this artifact wears off soon.} What Else Matters? Other favorite artists: Daniel Lanois, Ambitious Lovers, Marshall Crenshaw, Guy Klusevcek, Carla Bley, Kate & Anna McG., Ry Cooder, Caetano Veloso, Was (Not Was), Ivan Lins, many other world-types I've seen discussed in Ecto...so much music, so little time. I am in hog heaven with this month bringing both my introduction to Happy Rhodes and the new Donald Fagen album. Life is Short, Art Interminable. I also collect rubber stamps and do mail art networking in a small way, so if you're feeling arty drop me a line and I'll get back atcha. Paula Shanks pas@math.ams.org 701 N. The numbers I got are statistically insignificant, probably working out to all albums being equally great with a plus/minus 5 vote margin. I slanted suggestions by saying I would probably buy two, something old and something new, and this is what was recommended. Rhodes I III Ecto III Warpaint II Equipoise I Well, that was pretty thrilling, huh? The new CD-5, which sounds like a decent sampler in it's own right(?) led me to the following purchase. Something old - Rhodes I Something transitional - Ecto Something new (sort of)- HR5 Now I'm just eagerly awaiting my first chance to actually hear about Happy, rather than just read about her. Thanks for all the suggestions, neal ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 22 Jun 93 20:39:53 -0500 From: "Dennis G Parslow" Subject: Sundays (on Mondays), Madder Rose, eternal debt, etc. Well, around 3:45 am last night, I got back from New Haven...thanks to Meredith, I got to see the Sunday's at Toad's (with Madder Rose opening). The only complaints about the whole thing was the thunderstorm I got caught in (but didn't freeze due to overactive air conditioning, praise be) and that the Sunday's didn't play a very long set. They did get all my fave's off R,R&R, but didn't do the "Wild Horses" cover that I like so much. Harriet is, by the way, even cuter in person. She managed to look so thrilled at the crowd's enthusiam, which isn't always true by the second album. Madder Rose, the opener, is a 4-part group, with 3 guitars and a drummer, with a female/male combo for vocals (the woman getting any solo stuff). Heavy guitar stuff. Seems like a cross of PJ Harvey and (Curve? perhaps older Throwing Muses). The vocal sound was lighter though, and sounded opposite from the rest of the sound. I liked it though...I will try to find the album, and let you know. Meredith, you have my eternal gratitude for setting me up...I wouldn't have even heard of the show without you, and probably wouldn't have gone anyway if you hadn't gotten my ticket, so I really owe you one! And also, my apologies for not noticing the Ecto piece in the local paper before I left...I usually only read the sports page. *sigh* But I will write a letter to the TU about it. There was a lonely =p wrapped in a blank long box ($15.98!!!), with a sticker on the back that said: (paraphrased from memory) "The booklet in this CD is: A) A work of art B) a misprinted C) a collectors item If you answered B, to the above, then send a SASE to (AG) and we'll send you another one... We at AG want you to be thrilled...." What's the deal with this? Was there a problem at the printer??? Anyway, I took the CD to the manager and inquired about "her new CD5"... He went through all the books, and eventually said he could find no record of it... but that he'd probably be getting it next tuesday... (I'd like to see that...) :) Of course, I moved the CD (and card) the the R dept, where it belonged! One down, two to go in Boston - this weekend.. Non happy content follows: Over the past year, I've turned into somewhat of a cynic, and it's reached the point where my friends are finding me very depressing to be around. One of them said "you're really pathetic" to me over dinner a couple of nights ago.. It really got me thinking. The same night, she also asked me what books I have read lately. I can't honestly remember WHAT the last book I read was! I haven't read any books since last August. So what have I been reading instead? I'll tell you: NEWS, NEWS and more NEWS. And I mean the real stuff, ya know... newspapers, magazines, etc.... And to think I was wondering why I've become so depressed and cynical over the past year. There is hardly any good news worth mentioning! Well, in the Manchester Weekly Guardian of last week, there was a piece of good news. It made me feel good, anyway. I thought I'd share it with you: "Guatemala Leader Sworn In" - June 13, 1993, Page 7 Guatemala's human rights prosecutor was elected president and sworn in on Sunday, restoring democracy days after Jorge Serrano, who declared one-man rule, was ousted. Fireworks crackled and cheering erupted in the streets when congress elected Ramiro de Leon Carpio after his main opponent withdrew. Electing a human rights activist was unprecedented in a country with a poor human rights record and a 33-year civil war, the longest in Central America. "My mission is to save the nation of Guatemala," said Mr. de Leon Carpio, aged 51, the government ombudsman for human rights, whose job was suspended under emergency rule. He pledged to unite the country, which was shaken by Mr. Serrano's seizure of dictatorial powers on May 25 and his flight eight days later: "I am a democrat who will fight for liberty, but more than anything I will not tolerate voilence or injustice." Only 10 days earlier no one could have imagined these events. On may 25, the then-president, Mr. Serrano, sacked Mr de Leon Carpio and ordered troops to surround his house. Mr. de Leon Carpio escaped over his roof, and the following day held a clandestine news conference to condemn Mr. Serrano's "auto-coup" When Mr. Serrano's vice president, Gustavo Espina Salguero, declared himself president last week, hours after Serrano was overthrown, Mr. De Leon Carpio also denounced him. According to a deputy, Mr. de Leon Carpio has promised that Mr. Serrano and others involved in emergency rule will not be prosecuted. ---------------------------end of article------------------------------- being my natural cynical self, I predict that de Leon Carpio will be assassinated in the next month and Serrano will take over again.
