Subject: pass the salt... ...i think my words will taste better with some. well, as angelos and meredith alluded, i did end up going to see peter gabriel with them saturday night in worcester. i really had no intention of going, but when we got to meth's friend's place, we discovered that they had two extra tickets. angelos was interested in going both nights so i figured what the heck and went. the time was not all ill-spent either. ;) as angelos pointed out, the highlights were defintely "digging in the dirt" and "in your eyes". i'd also add the appearance of shankar on violin and the performance of a somewhat altered "across the river" from the 1982 womad _music and rhythm_ compilation as high points for me as well. i was not pleased with the funked up versions of "games without frontiers" and "shock the monkey" though - both completely lost the tension integral to its effect in a wash of synths and excessive beats per minute. gabriel seemed to hold well, though i'd advise him against prancing around on stage in tight black pants as he did.... overall, i'd say that this concert would be worth it to a dedicated gabriel fan and probably most gabriel fans as well. if you hedge like i hedged before though, i wouldn't recommend it for anything more than $25-30 or so. a related comment: vickie, i share your conviction about music...but i can't agree that music at any price is worth the cost. i'll concede that it's all subjective...but there must be some reasonable limit to the cost of concerts or albums or compact discs or laserdiscs or what have you. Neal R. Copperman sez: > All I know of Miranda Sex Garden is Madra, and I find it very pretty >and not very interesting. yeah, i agree with this. i picked up _madra_ a while back and listened to it exactly once. _iris_ on the other hand makes me listen to it every other day or so...boyz with guitarz it may have, but power it also has as well. still need to find that "gush forth my tears" single someday. jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu sez: >It was at the 9:30 Club in DC, where it's fairly traditional that the >headlining act doesn't go on 'til around midnight (argh!). Opening bands >Tone and Swell were good but not great. i caught them at cbgb last wednesday with three bands on before them. as a result, hnia went on around 1am or so and had their show cut short due to loudness or some such excuse from the bar. needless to say, warren was quite pissed (me as well). i missed the first band. the second was fossil who were kinda pearl jammish but a little lighter and more vapid - they had one cool effect though: the guitarist played his guitar with a violin bow on one tune. it sounded surprisingly mundane actually. swell was more intense but rather boring in the long run since every song was nearly the same. hnia played the same set (well, less of it) that they've played the two other times i saw them...but it never ceases to amaze me how much depth they create on stage with one acoustic (most of the time) guitar and one drumkit. i absolutely adore the juxtaposition of the noisy bits with the calm bits...and karen's angelic voice over it all is just plain wonder- ful. their latest album is great and would be greater if they had re- frained from the annoying guitar solo near the end of the release. i rec- ommend it highly. >Directly from Kevin Bartlett to your door*: >"I Say" is on the disc because Happy and I are particularly fond of it. yay| "i say" has easily become my favorite track on _equipoise_ followed closely, but not too closely, by "out like a lamb". my initial rapture about "he will come"/"the flight" has worn off for some reason i can not explain...fickleness perhaps? :) jmg@rocket.com (Jim Gurley) sez: >In my never-ending quest for the musically obscure: my question is does >anybody remember the name of this two or three album extravaganza from the >mid-70s that introduced the GIZMO to the world???? urm| i *used* to know the title...but i can't recall the title now. it's a three record boxed set and it's rather rare - there were only a thousand or so made if i recall correctly. the interesting thing about it was that all three lps were 45 rpm 12" slabs of vinyl. i used to play tracks from it occasionally on ye olde radio show in the late 80s - freaked out more than a few lsiteners as i recall. but i can not for the life of me recall the title of the album| argh| +woj ======================================================================== From: boek@mullian.ee.mu.oz.au (Christopher Boek) Subject: We won again ... He! That's the advantage of having only a few UUCP links on your mail path (I get News by quite a long UUCP path). :-) But apparently Ectophiles tend towards the same basic reflexes... ;-) I can't do anything about a Happy Pop Profile at the moment, anybody with some spare time? I'm not actually sure that an Amiga is required: To judge from the posting, the Pop Profiles may be a bit more general concept... The year is slightly off, but otherwise... :-) Finally, I got hold of the new Savage Rose compilation (double) album a few days ago. Nice! It outlines the development of the group pretty well, and demonstrates just how good they are... Apparently, Savage Rose is preparing a new album with English lyrics at the moment... The only thing about the album I don't like is the packaging: Rather than using a jewel box, they've chosen a cardbox package, not the most durable packaging... On the plus side, on the front of the package is a spot that gives of scent when you touches it - couldn't understand why I was suddenly smelling roses... :-) Jens P. Well, Saturday night Chris and I did our bit to keep the Hollywood money-making machinery lubed by going to see Jurassic Park *and* The Last Action Hero, but we redeemed ourselves tonight by seeing Much Ado About Nothing. Saturday we got to the theater at 8:00pm, in hopes of getting tickets to the 9:40pm showing, but of course it was sold out. We could have seen a 10:25pm showing in a smaller theater, but wanted front row center in the BIG theater, so we bought tickets for 12:15am. Since we had *plenty* of time to kill, we ate dinner and then went to see Swartznguy's offering, which actually turned out to be quite cute! It could have used some snappier editing, but the plot and in-jokes were very clever. I had judged it quite unfairly based solely on that horrible Macy's-sized balloon at Cannes. The movie is sort of like...um... The Purple Rose of Cairo meets Lethal Weapon. Jurassic Park? YOW! Nice Dinos! Bought the book tonight... Much Ado About Nothing? Exactly! (Chris *loved* it!) We stopped by Tower on the way home, hoping to buy Sweet Relief, but the release date's been set back a week. I did pick up the new Cranes, and a CD single by Fairground Attraction. I haven't listened to either yet. The new Rooling Stain has a great review of Sweet Relief in it. Tower(Chicago) had one copy of Warpaint, one copy of Rhodes II and 5 (count 'em, five) copies of Rearmament! None of the others. Thanks Alan, for passing along that article! Good job!!! Ok, the Bulls won, *finally*, their 3rd World Championship. 3-Peat. (What a stupid name) No more Bulls talk for a whole nother year! How about that! Thanks to Peter F-M and AT&T, we heard the Kate song from last night. It's *beautiful*!! Some gaffians I know are just absolutely going to *hate* it! Isn't that *wonderful*?? Bring on the album!! I can't wait! So Chris is waiting (im)patiently for me to finish so he can download the sound file. Later... HAPPY BIRTHDAY David Lubkin!! Please take the time to let us know what you think about Happy's music, first generally: Comparisons: (these don't necessarily have to be the obvious ones) General Comments: Recommended first album: Then specifically for each album: What are your favourite songs? Why would you recommend this particular Happy album to someone else? What is particularly powerful about this album? What is essentially Happy about the music in it? We would like an overwhelming response--after all, Happy's music is mostly what we're here for, right? Please help us out with this. This afternoon I was on the way home from Dortmund to Osnabrueck. I was just passing a number of trucks with a speed of 140 km/h (90 mph) when the car suddenly got slower and I heard a rumble that grew louder and louder. Looking into the mirror I saw a cloud of smoke and small black shreds flying through the air. Fortunately there was a parking place where I could stop the car. When I got out of the car I saw the dilemma: the left rear tire was flat and totally ripped up. Inconceivable if this had been the front tire.... I exchanged it against the spare tire, which really is a SPARE tire in a VW Golf. It's thinner and smaller than the original one and it only allows a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). I safely arrived at home and still can't believe what happened. Back to my diploma (only 8 weeks to go).
