I've heard that the band's name was chosen as the average volume of the average male's ejaculate. Ditto the "Lovin' Spoonful". I believe I read this in an old Playboy Magazine some time ago..... "November Spawned a Monster" was the second single released after the _Viva Hate_ stuff died down (the first non-album single was _Ouija Board, Ouija Board_). Both songs eventually appeared on, oh piffle, what's the name of that album? It's not coming to me. Anyway, *Mary* Margaret O'Hara "sang" BVs on "NSaM," the normal single mix. We all enjoyed being bombarded by the special effects, and given that it was unlikely they would invest any more into character development and plot, we'd just as soon seen the moralizing and pro-family charming sequences thrown out the window. The movie was propelled by the thrills and the build-ups, and undermined by the fact that there wasn't much else there. I read Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" after seeing Blade Runner any number of times, and I'd have to say that they are both masterpieces, and have almost nothing to do with each other. One scene appears verbatum in the movie, and that is it. The book does elaborate on things that are only peripheral to the movie, but the climax of the book has an android throwing the heros android sheep off a building! Look for that in the movie. All I know of Miranda Sex Garden is Madra, and I find it very pretty and not very interesting. It always seems pleasent for about 2 songs, and then I've lost interest. The Proclaimers are a different story though. I can listen to them for hours and not get tired. I saw Benny and Joon solely for the use of the song. This is Clannad the way they useta, strongly reminiscent of their best (IMHO) Magical Ring/Macalla era stuff; very haunting, very Celtic. Wrt the books/movies thread, I agree, see the movie first. Well, I'm pleased to say that I just returned from a very good HNIA concert! (Mike, I committed to the ticket a while ago...;-) It was at the 9:30 Club in DC, where it's fairly traditional that the headlining act doesn't go on 'til around midnight (argh!). Opening bands Tone and Swell were good but not great. HNIA played a wide variety of stuff from all three of their albums, including a couple of instrumentals. I was amazed at how good Karen sounded without all the multitracking and looping and whatnot that HNIA use on their albums. She did a *wonderful* a capella version of "Cornfields" as the first encore, beginning it by apologizing that she didn't have all the tape loops for it and that she'd have to sing it alone, a capella. She did lose her place once, at the beginning of the second verse, but she smiled and settled back in. Gorgeous. The band _was_ much noisier/crunchier than they are on the albums. Warren was just all over his guitars. Scary, scary noises emanating from that thing! He was also being clever and misintroducing almost every song. Such as saying, "This is from our first album. It's the title track." at which point the band would play something from the second album. Or he told a long story that should have introduced "Cornfields" but it actually introduced...um...again, something from the second album. They played a good variety of stuff from all 3 records. Their set lasted an hour. While this was certainly no where near the best concert I've seen, it was definitely worth the $5 admission, and probably even a bit more than that. Jeff |Jeffrey C. The boutiques are far out. Well, HR'5 is finally in our midst. Happy's first CD5 or CD single or EP or whatever you want to call it, has arrived. The 5 tracks, plus a 5 second mystery track 6, are "Feed the Fire" (from Warpaint), an acoustic cover of Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes", an acoustic version of "Save Our Souls" featuring some very tasty guitar work from Chuck D'Aloia of "He Will Come" fame, "I Say" (from Equipoise) and an acoustic tribute version of "Feed the Fire." The tributes specifically are a nod to Kate, Jon Anderson, and again, Mr. Bowie. The disc will not be commercially available. It was made specifically for radio promotion. A lot of the Equipoise target stations were never aware of Warpaint, hence "Feed the Fire". A lot of the NAC stations that played FTF didn't do much for Equipoise, so we're giving them the acoustic FTF to consider for replay. The AAA format, which we go after with a vengence, loves covers and acoustic stuff, thusly Ashes to Ashes, etc. "I Say" is on the disc because Happy and I are particularly fond of it. Hopefully this is the most deliberately commercial and manipu- lative project we'll ever stoop to. (Cross your fingers) The recording is impeccable. Happy shines as always, especially on S.O.S.. It's downright hypnotic. So anyway, we want to make HR'5 available to Ectophiles, and Ectophiles only. Bonified, registered, card-carrying Ectophiles. There were only 930 pressed and we've set aside 200 for sale. Our sales and marketing guy thinks it could it could become a retail item someday, like in Sept. or October. We both agree on the possibility of that, but only if there was a huge demand. Who knows if that will ever happen? He also thinks that if we sell to Ectophiles, we'll be reducing that demand at the retail level. You know how marketing people can be.... I told him I would ask each of you to please call a record store in your neck of the woods and say, "I heard there is a new Happy Rhodes CD5 on the radio, can you get it? Do you have it?" Blah, blah, blah, etc. This calmed him down. So it's kind of important to us that if you order one of these things, you call a store and pretend that you'll die if they don't start stocking it. Then you can be an evil, deceptive marketing mogul like the rest of us. Our price for HR'5 is $12.00. I know it's a little pricy for only 3 new songs, but when we look at our manufacturing costs and the advertising value of 200 less CDs for radio and giveaways, it's the best we can do. If it becomes a major disc at radio and retial and we do slap a bar code on it and mass produce, it could very easily show up in stores for $9.99. We'd hate anyone to feel shitty about that, but the other side of the coin is that if it doesn't become an item in demand, it'll wind up in used CD stores as a $50.00 collector's item. Stop me if I'm getting too cocky. I think this label president thing is going to my head. Actually, my dream in life is to mail each and every one of you this disc with a huge "THANK YOU" stamped across it....someday. So that's the deal kids. Ectophiles only. When they're gone, they're gone (kind of like the Cadbury easter eggs). One per customer and we'll try to sign them all. Call a store or two and make them crazy, 'cause they won't be able to order it for a while. Twelve bucks and the usual P&H and all my love and thanks. If only you knew how much Happy and I revere your friendship, belief and support. Oh by the way stuff.......... First band meeting was Sunday. We're all gearing up for what we hope (subject to funding) will be a nice little tour. Plans are for Phila, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Minneapolis, Toronto, Kansas City, Dallas and NYC. Maybe the Bearsville Theatre and a stop in Chicago, Maine or Vermont. Sorry Westerners. As always, it depends on $$$$$$ and where airplay and sales are strong. Bottom line is we have to fill seats, but Happy's into it and the new band line up is complete. Rehersals begin in about two weeks. Bob (remember Bob?) is on tour with Van Halem for the rest of his life, so if you see him out there please say hi for us. Mitch Elrod's new AG release is slated for August. If you like King Crimson, Captain Beefheart, Jane Roberts, Primus, Chegal all rolled into one, you might dig it. Ms. Rhodes will probably lend a vocal cord or two to the project. She's already lent us her guitar. That's all for now. I hope everyone is well and that we see you on the road this fall.
