Have you ever heard that she has been (or will be) opening for him? Something that Angelos might be interested to hear is that "Einstuer- zende Neubauten" will open for U2, in France if I remember correctly. Speaking of concerts, I can't leave without mentioning Bobo again. We spend last weekend in Bremen and I already noticed that she'd be playing in Muenster, which is on our way back home, on last sunday night, so we were considering seeing her again, although we already had tickets for her concert in Cologne on next sunday. Arriving in Bremen on friday afternoon we noticed a Bobo poster next to our hotel, announcing a concert of hers in Bremen on that very night. Unfortunately we already had plans for that night, so we couldn't make it. _____ Klaus "cosmic vagabond" Kluge private: klaus@inphobos.w.open.de I'll be here, I'll be (in) Ecto work: kkluge@materna.de ======================================================================== Date: 08 Jun 1993 15:43:18 -0400 (EDT) From: "she listens like her head's on fire.." Apparently they opened for U2 somewhere in Holland, and the reception was quite bad from both the crowd and the band. They didn't really like the idea of playing to people who were having a picnic, and obviously their music wasn't suited for a stadium so they decided to quit immediately and were replaced by the Velvet Underground for some of the dates of Zooropa '93. BTW, does anybody in Europe know if U2 will play in Athens, Greece anytime this summer? Heck, G'n'R did, so why not U2. :-) Speaking of VU, I am *very* excited by their reunion. Yesterday, _All Things Considered_ did an interview with Sheila Chandra, which I was going to tape but couldn't, as fate would have it, due to low batteries. She discussed the various influences in her music, of which they played some samples. I found the presence of Celtic influences amid the Indic ones the most interesting aspect of the whole thing. The night before, Annie Lennox was the guest on Whoopi Goldberg's TV show. Characteristically, I slept through practically all of it; but I got enough of it at the beginning and the end to find it interesting how conventional she looks when she's not actually performing :-). Klaus' mention of Einsturzende Neubauten reminds me that the Insomnia Records catalog carries at least one title of theirs. The returned messages are more and more confusing :-( I still haven't digested my impressions from the KlangArt festival that happend here in Osnabrueck last week (May 26-29). KlangArt is devided into three parts: the festival (live music), the KonGress, and MusiTec (the exhibition). The purpose of KlangArt is the demonstration (festival) and discussion (KonGress) of the esthetic and artistic aspects of music and electronics (this isn't my formulation!). I didn't take part in the KonGress, but I tried to see as many of the concerts as possible. Wednesday, May 26: OrchesterElektronik ------------------- 1. After the obligatory opening-blah-blah the Symphony Orchestra of Osnabrueck performed a concert for clarinet (Paolo Beltramini) and electronics by Luca Francesconi (born 1956 in Milan). Although the so-called new music didn't work for me it was very interesting, because the sound of the clarinet was electronically processed and sent through an 8-channel speaker system. It was distorted and delayed and echoed through the hall from side to side and from front to back. I couldn't find any harmonical or rhythmical structure in the music although the conductor was very busy. Maybe I'm not experienced enough WRT this kind of music. 2. Peter Michael Hamel (born 1947 in Munich) performed a composition on the computer-organ, called "Le Tombeau de Messiaen" in memory of the French composer Olivier Messiaen who died last year. The organ has big pipes like a church organ which do not produce the sound (it's produced electronically) but intensify it through their resonance. The player can record parts of the song and let them replay automatically to add another voice live. The composition was very moving and dynamical. 3. The symphony orchestra performed the composition "Resonance" by York Hoeller (born 1944 in Leverkusen/Germany). The orchestra was confronted with an 'imaginary orchestra', i.e. on tape recorded computer-generated sounds that were sent through a 4-channel speaker system. The composition was similar to the first one but the sounds were more effective and surreal. All in all it was an impressive concert. After the last sound died away we had to hurry to the next venue that was five minutes away (by foot). I had a festival ticket, this meant I had to appear at the venue 20 minutes before the begin of the concert. KlangNacht (sound night) ---------- 1. The Ulli Boegershausen Trio (two acoustic guitars, one bass) performed some low acoustic guitar songs (what else?). Not very impressive, I don't know what this had to do with KlangArt, but they were only the support act. 2. The Thomas Kessler Group performed a combination of jazz, rock and electronic music. They started very promising with stunning modern synthesizer/sampler-sounds, interesting sequences, ethno-percussion etc. But then they relapsed into standard jazz music, still athmospheric but rather boring. ...to be continued. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ || \\\\\ || ///// | dkastens@dosuni1.rz.Uni-Osnabrueck.DE || ))))) IRK || ((((( ASTENS | "Music's the way, the only way I know" || ///// || \\\\\ | Happy Rhodes ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 09 Jun 93 11:11:14 +0100 From: Terry Partis Subject: HaPpY Birthday Here's wishing a Very HAPPY birthday to Julianne Dunphy on June 10th, Have a great day Julianne Peace Terry === Only in your eyes lies your soul ========================= Happy Rhodes === _ __ Jolly Hockeysticks _ __ / `-' ( ,,, / `-' ( ,,, | I I ||||||[:::] Terry (Tel Boy) Partis | I I ||||||[:::] \_.-._( ''' (tgp@ukc.ac.uk) \_.-._( ''' With a smile and a song - I'm HaPpy Let me sleep awhile and dream of Avalon and the Beltane fires.................. ............................................our souls entwined for all eternity ======================================================================== Subject: Re: parable?
