I think you'll find it *IS* with Lou Reed. The Velvets' gig at Wembley Arena this Sunday is being heavily plugged on Virgin Radio (I think they are involved in the promotion, or sponsoring it, or something) and I'm sure the ads are promising Lou Reed, John Cale, and Mo Tucker in the line-up. If I wasn't already lined up to do something else that night I'd probably have gone to see 'em. Of course it could be crap, but I've a sneaking suspicion it might be surprisingly good. I look forward to reading Kjetil's report of their performance in Ecto (there will *BE* one won't there? Hint! (That's Rochester, NY, not Rochester, Kent (in England) which is where I was born & brought up - a fact which caused the US immigration official some amusement the last time I went to Rochester, NY, when he saw my birthplace in my (British) passport). We're flying in via Boston, but on my way back on Saturday 12th I've arranged the flights to maximise (well, extend, I wasn't prepared to get a 6.30am flight out of Rochester) my stopover time in Chicago. My plane from Rochester should get in about 11.15am and my flight back to the UK leaves at about 8.30pm so I should have plenty of time to get away from the airport and see something on the city. So, if there will be any Chicago Ectophiles around that Saturday afternoon I'd love to meet up with you. Thanks to Mitch and others I have a long list of things one can pass time in Chicago doing but hanging out in person with some of the people I only know electronically through Ecto would be even better! If you fancy meeting up, send me some Email or give me a call. Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday nights I'll be staying at the Strathallen Hotel in Rochester, which is on (716) 461-5010. I know there are a couple of Ectophiles from the Rochester area, but I'm not expecting to get any time for social activities while I'm there. NT usually likes to make sure it gets its money's worth from flying its staff across the pond! But if Al Sodoma's around, maybe we can do lunch one day Al? -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. I guess we should flatter them for covering the music revolution of the 90s and indicate that ecto is revolutionary in its own way, diverse and friendly even though the main interaction link is electrons floating around and travelling through the wires. I believe that with enough hype we could get Happy on MTV, and then we could be all *very* proud! And I guess that's >made clear by your own misguided interpretation of the song. Indeed. I *knew* I was missing something. I'll admit I never looked at the lyrics very closely, but nonetheless, I'm sure I fell subject to exactly what you mention here. How totally ironic. Thanks for enlightening me. I wonder how many other songs I'm missing... (probably lots... I'm terrible at figuring out song lyrics, and most often I don't even try). But I am good at figuring out song music, as was evidenced in my guitar class last night, when we were trying to write down chords for some songs people brought it. It was markedly frustrating to watch while the instructor battled with his guitar to produce the right chords (even the ones he settled on were often blatantly wrong). And it's not like we were deciphering DeBussy, either: Romeo and Juliet (Knopfler)... I mean this song has 4/5 chords, that's it. He did decide by the end that it was a great song, thereby admitting (total ignorance) that he'd probably never heard the song before. Gripes. I brought in a Happy Rhodes song for the class, all neatly transcribed and typed out: The Chase (a fine tune). In doing so, I discovered that not only did the song get MASSACRED on the CD (were any others killed this way??), but she also changed the key. The original sounds like F. If anyone would like, I will post my transcription (for guitar) to ecto. Lots of Major Sevenths, which I love. The most interesting thing was introducing people to Happy Rhodes. I played the tape of the song, and people seemed mesmorized. They of course thought she had a great voice, one guy even thought she sounded like Kate Bush (I didn't even think the people in this class had heard of *her* --- am I an elitist, or what?), but by far the most reigning opinion was "Is she depressed, or WHAT?" I found this rather odd, because I view The Chase as one of Happy's HAPPIER songs! Jeff, care to convince me otherwise? :-) Here's to heading a lobby to put THE ORIGINAL The Chase on a CD!!!!! Happy, if you're listening, please please please please please please! This is for Bay Area ectophiles I will be moving to Berkeley in August, and from asking around here I have been given the impression that the housing situation there is really bad. I would really appreciate it if some of you in the general vicinity could contact me with advice on where to stay near the Berkeley campus (or in areas accessible by public transportation (BART?)), what rents to expect for 1BR/studios and which papers carry the most classifieds for apartments to rent etc. I will be visiting in a month or so to find an apartment, and would like to go prepared and minimize my hunt. I always thought it was written for Charlotte Bronte though. Someone told me that she was painfully shy and to add to that everyone kept their distance thinking she would not be interested in speaking to them due to her "fame" (????) and so she died lonely. No? I don't really know, but that's what I heard. I'm heading straight for the library this weekend though, and look it up (the book Charlotte Sometimes)! I think its great that he writes stuff based on books. My other favorite Cure song is Kyoto Song. I don't suppose that's based on a book, but any ideas about what "it" is? I always figured "it" was water. It looks good (and it does) It tastes like nothing on earth (water doesn't really taste like anything and nothing on Earth tastes like it Its so smooth (it is) It even feels like skin (well, this is debateable but water does have a skin) It tells me how it feels to be new (images of washing, cleanliness, baptism) Arguements? Opinions? Andrea. ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
