Hi Shelly! ======================================================================== From: shelly25@aol.com Subject: Yet Another (Albeit Late) Intro Date: Fri, 26 Jun 92 23:29:04 EDT Sorry it's taken me so long to introduce myself. I've been reading and very much enjoying -- an unfortunately procrastinating. (I'm _really_ good at that. So--hmm--well--I'm originally from KansasCity, and now live in Lawrence, KS (home to the university of KS, from which I have a BA in English). I heard about Happy both on Love Hounds and RDT. And then one day I was at a used record store and in a sale bin I happened upon the Warpaint CD (without the little cover booklet so I was glad to find the FTP site!) for $4. Needless to say -- I loved it! So I signed onto ecto. Which, I'd like to say, is THE nicest, friendliest mailing list I've ever seen! Not, of course, that I've seen that many, but hopefully you know what I mean... I've got brown hair that I wish were red. I was born July 10, 1966, and my shoe size is 8 1/2. As far as my musical tastes go -- I mostly like female vocalists, but I kinda have eclectic tastes. Happy (of course) and Tori and Kate. Sarah McClachlan (!), Nanci Griffith, Laurie Anderson, Everything but the Girl, 10,000 Maniacs (well, I like Natalie Merchants voice anyway), Michele Shocked, Barbra Streisand -- AND I even like some men -- Peter Gabriel, Todd Rundgren, HotHouse Flowers, James Taylor -- and a little bit of more alternative-ish-y bands like Ned's Atomic Dustbin and Violent Femmes. So. Enough about me. Thanks to Everyone for such a WARM welcome. You've made me feel so at home. :) Shelly shelly25@aol.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- Cause I can see the future and it's a place - about 70 miles east of here. Just because she is playing some songs with R.E.M. doesn't mean she left the band. BUT: the new album is out in Germany. I just bought it today (for just DM 19.95 = $12.5), and as far as a first listen can tell: it sounds very good. If only you could read the titles of the songs, which are very thin, handwritten on a distracting background. Angelos about B-52's: > A brief reminder. I finally settled on Genesis' _Selling England By the Pound_, which my father has a copy of. It was very interesting to see my friends' reactions. One of them is a very musical sort of person; he's got a great ear and plays and writes a lot of music. Unfortunately, to my mind, he wastes a lot of this on his passion for heavy metal, but to each his own. Another of the friends has what I would call great taste in music--to an extent. Between the two of us, we seem to cover just about the full extent of the musical spectrum--I pick up the folkier, more ethereal, ethnic, art-rock, etc. side while he covers the dance/industrial/etc end. We overlap on an incredible amount of stuff including the Smiths, the Pogues, KaTe (he owns some interview CDs I don't have!), and so forth. After several minutes, they both realized it was Peter Gabriel. Neither of them had heard any old Genesis, and I seemed to hook them both through the single song "Dancing Out With the Moonlit Knight". One of 'em commented "I didn't know they _ever_ made music like this!" Well, _I_ thought it was neat. Anyway... ObHappy? Well, if you can listen to "Love's Sabotage" and the incredible guitar solo there-in and try convince me with a straight face that Kevin 'n Happy weren't influenced by Hackett-era Genesis, well, you're insane or should be out raking in money playing poker. ;-) Jeff |Jeffrey C. Date: Sun, 28 Jun 92 0:37:39 CDT Chris & I went to see Batman Returns last night and we loved it! I hadn't seen any mention of the fact that a Siouxsie song is featured in the film. It is playing in the "Costume Ball" scene and is also played in the ending credits. It's called "Face to Face" and was written by Danny Elfman. Siouxsie & Danny should get together more often. A few words about Batman Returns: NO spoilers... This is not a film for all children! If you have kids and they haven't seen it yet, I'd highly recommend seeing it yourself first and then judge if your children are old enough and mentally strong enough to handle it. It's rated PG, but it (IMHO) should have been rated PG-13. It's *VERY* dark, cynical, forbidding, scary and violent. Much, much more so than the first one (which I saw for the first time last Monday night, in preparation for seeing this one) and, after seeing it, we could at least understand why so many parents groups are angry that the movie is being marketed toward children via the McDonalds promotions. I don't agree with banning or boycotting a film, and I often disagree with the entire ratings system, but in this case, parents should at least be warned that it's not suitable for all children, and will disturb quite a few. Hell, it will disturb quite a few adults! (Just check out the controversy in rec.arts.movies) Anyway, we thought it was wonderful (even though there are some major plot hole problems) and we'll probably see it at least once more before it leaves the theaters. My show, "Suspended In Gaffa" airs every Monday night (well, *almost* every Monday night. Sometimes I'm pre-empted, or I'm late mailing the show) at 10:00pm (I think. They keep changing the schedule) The station is KKFI. It's a 100,000 watt Community station and I used to (maybe still, if they've stuck through all the schedule changes) have a lot of listeners in Lawrence, so I know the signal reaches. The show is aired "within" another show called Parallel Ports, hosted by my very good friend Sue, so if you hear that intro first, you're in the right place. She gives up an hour of her show to air mine. She focuses entirely on female vocals too, though her tastes are a bit different from mine most of the time. If you can pick it up, tomorrow night is the 1st of my 3 part Happy special. You'll get to hear a lot of songs from her early albums, plus some of the bonus tracks. --END PLUG FOR SIG-- > (home to the university of KS, from which I have a BA in English). Great!!! Carroll" Date: Sun, 28 Jun 92 11:43:02 -0400 ->Chris & I went to see Batman Returns last night and we loved it! I just had to second this... I caught BR opening night with a bunch of friends. I tend to watch movies with an eye towards the direction - the quality of direction is what makes a truly great movie. I've always especially loved the visual directors who have a bent towards the surreal, like Ridley Scott or Stanley Kubrick. After seeing Batmans returns, I include Tim Burton as one of the true masters of visual art on film. Visually, BR is absolutely STUNNING!! The camera work, the characterization, the editing, and the control of the actors make this one of the finest uses of film that I've seen in years! The plot was a bit weak - it was very contrived, and had some gaping holes in it. But the way the movie is made, the plot is very secondary. BR is _not_ an action movie - it's an amazing portrayal of the interaction between misfits. The entire movie really centers on the mental state of the three central characters. It's a very brooding, dark, psychological film. The only movie I've seen in the last couple of years that tops BR was the Fisher King. I first heard about them when they played here in Lawrence (KS) a few months ago. Unfortunately I didn't seem them, but soon afterwards, I bought a CD sampler called "Stanley, Son of Theodore: Yet Another Alternative Music Sampler" which included a Sun-60 song. I loved it! And kicked myself for missing them. Anyway, this is what the CD insert says about them: Passionate and audacious, intelligent and sophisticated, Sun-60's self-titled Epic debut album is the handiwork of Los Angeles natives David Russo and Joan Jones. Their kinda-folk, kinda-rock sound was born of countless live gigs for which Sun-60 consisted of David, Joan and...well, whoever else showed up. "Our goal was never to let the band over-shadow the song," says David. "That's why we never had a problem with going on stage with just a bass and guitar, or guitar and drums, or whatever."
