Ooh crumbs.... well, if no-one else is gonna admit it, I guess I'll have to. :) Coming, Jeanne, coming.... Re: Warpaint and *bink*bop*teenk*swish* Well, I'm a drummer myself, and I don't find Warpaint in the least annoying. Then again, I conciously avoid thinking of the percussion as trying to 'imitate' real drums, rather I just see them as another form of percussion, another groove. Actually, I doubt one could achieve that sort of precision with real hi-hats, unless Happy had got, say, Sly Dunbar and Sticky Thompson in to do it. (In my dreams) The best thing about real drums is the actual physical part of playing them, I doubt they'll ever be replaced, even if synths can replace them sonically. However, as Chris "Hairy" Sampson put it : "...I like electronic keyboards best when they're NOT trying to sound like something else!" I think it says something when, of all the possible sounds you could use for percussion, 99% of drum machines try to exactly duplicate the sound of wood hitting stretched skins and flat plates of metal. The title track has been re-mixed by Ross Cullum and Ian Stanley is credited with "additional production" (Who they? - Ed.), but it doesn't sound radically different from the "Little Earthquakes" version (which is also on the single). The main interest is in the two other tracks, "Here, in my head" and "Mary", which are not from the album. Are these familair from her live shows? P.S. to Klaus: I've recorded my HBP '92 contribution and the total length (music & message) is about 6'45". I'm taking a day off work on Thursday so I should be able to get to a Post Office and get the tapes sent off to Greg. I hope you are able to kick back and relax, listen to some yummy music on your personal anniversaries! Also greetings (equally warm and fuzzy blue) to any new and returning (Hi, Vishal! :) ) Ectophiles, joining us lurking or otherwise. There have been so many recently (Ain't it great!!) that it's hard to keep up. If you're new, feel free to pop up, say "hi!", tell you "How I found Happy story", and give us your birthday! If you wish a copy of the FAQ, feel free to ask! To make a total pain of myself :), don't forget to send in your Happy Birthday Project songs, if you want to participate!! The deadline is one week from tomorrow, aka July 1st. Since I've gotten several requests, here is the announcement once more: The deadline for submitting tapes for the Happy Birthday Project is July 1st. For any newcomers, the Happy Birthday Project is designed to put together a couple of tapes holding songs and greetings submitted by Ectophiles in honor of Happy's 27th birthday on August 9th. Any song that you would like Happy to hear can be submitted. Spoken messages are particularly encouraged and solicited, including not only introductions for your musical submission, but what Greg has characterized as "interludes and comments about life, Ecto, and everything." If you wish to contribute to this project, two actions are needed. One, e-mail to Klaus (klaus@inphobos.w.open.de) the name and length (if available) of your chosen song and whether you will include any spoken content. Two, send two C-100 cassette tapes including your musical and spoken contributions plus return postage to the Ecto non-electronic mailbox: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 USA Greg will be coordinating the actual assembly of the recording. (Thanks, footah!) The final result will be dubbed and mailed back to all contributors. Non-contributors can receive a copy of the HBP tape through Doug Burks' tape dubbing project [dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu]. If you have no way of recording your spoken message, you can leave one on Vickie Mapes' answering machine. Her phone number is +1 (312) 508-5283. The collected messages will be forwarded for inclusion on the final HBP tape. We are looking for volunteers to help copy and mail the final tapes. Time is short! Act now! Oh come on Vickie, why be so restrictive. Female vocals certainly have an allure, but *requiring* that *no* male vocals appear is asking for too much. In Greece, albums are generally based on works of composers. And female *and* male singers sing on them. [Haris, Eleftheria have shared several albums with male singers.] And there are lots of gifted male vocalists around.
